Erol Doko this definitely wasn't his his worst day. It's among his best performances vocally, even though he was sick at the time. He hits notes here that he never does again, ex. the C5's in We Are The Champions when he says "fighting." If you want to hear his worst, look up Bohemian Rhapsody 4/23/79 on KZread. It's far worse because of his constant touring at that time.

Borja Orive actually Freddie Mercury did have a throat infection and was advised by his doctor not to sing at live aid but he did anyway. Freddie was sick.

I read read a perfect quote about this performance: “Freddie held the microphone on in one hand, and the crowd in the other.”

No matter how big the crowd, he always had them at the palm of his hand. Greatest showman to have ever existed. RIP Freddie...

It isn't perfect singing, but it is a perfect performance. You only get one shot at it, the whole world is watching, and they rose to the challenge like nobody before or since. They destroyed that stage and gave the greatest live performance of all time.

I agree. He was actually sick at that time, likely due to HIV/AIDS, though he was diagnosed two years later. It’s amazing that he sang so beautifully even though The was sick and it was likely painful for him to do so.

To me Queen was my brother's favourite and I didn't care for them until their set. Even I was captivated by this performance. The crowd clapping is just hair raising, goose bump stuff.

At The Disco’s Emperors New Clothes anyways he is such a legendary performer and such an eccentric person unique and quite a character though his persona on stage is different from his actual personality of stage... he comes off arrogant on stage but his off stage life was quite private he’s a very private person... as I am told...

He was healthy here. He wasn’t diagnosed until 87. The movie just probably had to mix things up a little to fit it in.

I am live sound engineer, and have been for about 30 years. I can tell you much of the imperfections you are hearing are sound related. This show was a festival, with quick set changes between bands. There wasn't much time for fine tuning anything... probably no real sound checks. It's what we sound guys call "throw and go"..... meaning throw all your gear on stage and go for it. Much of what Freddie is compensating for, is probably a less than desirable mix in his stage monitors. Often times if a singer struggles to hear himself over the band, they will do many of the things you are pointing out, just to cut through the mix and hear themselves. They will also cut notes short, and use different techniques for economy's sake. Rock singers are conditioned for the long haul. They have to move a lot and be entertaining, as well as sing. As he had performed hundreds of shows with Queen, he probably had habits that go against good technical singing, for the sake of entertaining and lasting through a full show. I see aging rock drummers adopt an economy to their playing as well. It's all about getting through a full show and be able to do it again tomorrow after you've travelled all night long. If you've seen the Moody blues, live, in the last 30 years... you have seen that they added a second drummer. Graham Edge was very honest and open about his stamina beginning to wain. He saves his energy for the important signature stuff, and lets the other drummer hold down the general time keeping stuff. Performing live, in a sound reinforced environment, trying to compete with other instruments and voices... night after night, can be very draining. I've seen musicians get into fist fights over stage volumes. So in that setting... a singer like Freddy is competing against a few different things, but has his tricks to cut through what he's hearing on stage. In a live concert setting... the stage monitors are mixed individually. Each musician can have what hey want in their monitors. Getting that mix right and balancing it all around the stage is a tough job for the monitor engineer.

The performance at Live Aid, for my generation was one of those "Remember where you were" moments. I was watching Live Aid in my living room with some friends. We were talking a half paying attention to the concert...and then Queen took the stage. I remember all of us suddenly fell silent, our attention turned to the T.V. I turned the volume up and we all just sat there in amazement. From the moment they started to play, Freddie had the entire crowd in his hands. When they kicked into Radio Ga-Ga and the crowd at Wembly all clapped in unison, (us included) that was simply AMAZING! 72,000+ people there and 1.9 million around the world...we all clapped. We watched the entire concert, but by far and away, this was the performance that stole the show! Freddie Mercury was blessed with the voice of God.

The lady is offering a professional insight into this performance, don't understand why people are getting offended. Freddie admitted in several interviews that he didn't sing correctly and was known to lose his voice on numerous occasions due to that fact. This was a very interesting take on an epic performance, thank you for posting!

Marija Šakić Because it is what some people do. If you can understand what is going on behind the music as she clearly does then you have to take note. As someone who used to teach on instrument I understand what makes one musician completely beloved even though he is not the best at what he does and another who is the best technically admired for technique but not beloved in the same way, for my instrument. It doesn't just apply to music. Bobby Fischer is still cited as one of the greatest Chess players even though Chess has moved on technically his style is unsurpassed for many even though not a great human being.

Freddy Duhsanga Definitely is one of their best performances. Just because his tone is naturally lower than earlier in his career doesn’t make it any worse. He performs the best live versions of Radio Gaga, Hammer To Fall, and We are the champions. Bohemian Rhapsody is the best medley version and he’s just hitting high notes throughout which mostly only Crazy Tour and early Game Tour shows can beat.

I was a high school student at the time and sat all day watching Live Aid with 4 speakers around me. I was waiting for Phil Collins and had no interest in Queen...until this happened. Even I was blown away by Queen's performance.

That little vocal run session with the audience was kind of ingenius if you think about it. He's straining in one song, so in between he disguises a warm up/realignment as crowd interaction before going into the next.

'Ay-Oh' is actually a copyrighted Queen track! But it was probably born out of a desire to get the audience involved in the show (a big thing for Queen) and (by way of a bonus) warm the vocal chords up a bit more too.

I saw Queen live on their last tour in 86, then I attended the Freddie tribute concert in Wembley in 1992. The saddest/most amazing thing in the tribute concert was that they played video of Freddie’s vocal runs in between each act... and the crowd response was just unbelievable. I’ll never forget it.

I’m no vocalist but I am a musician and I can say this is a great analysis. Though there’s a lot of positivity in some of these comments when scrolling down there’s sadly a lot of people complaining about this woman saying she doesn’t have room to critique cause she isn’t some big musician. Freddie is one of my favorite musicians ever but everyone makes mistakes, including him. I just hope some of you people screeching in the comments could realize this. Anyway, great analysis!

@@ukiluser He was supposed to be ill that day. Might have been just a cold. HIV/AIDS causes you to get sick much easier that an HIV free person. So I wonder is he knew he was sick before he was diagnosed. Also, it took a while for the test to be developed for HIV/AIDS, so he have had the virus, and it wasn't detectable. He looked awful a year later, that's when the rumors started, and it wasn't confirmed to the day before he died. They also hadn't played a concert for a long time together, and only had a short time to rehearse, so he/they might have been a little off, but you could not tell me that. It was an awesome performance.

Its pure conjecture, but, often among the first symptoms, was/is candida infection of the throat/mouth and chest infections. Many people with HIV had/have opportunistic infections repeatedly before even thinking about getting tested. Back then, it could take time before a GP would realise the sequence of symptoms and advise testing. He was obviously struggling for breath on this occasion and I suspect he had a chest infection as well. I was nursing people with HIV in the late 80s & onwards but this is still conjecture. Although, re: his diagnostic 'date', it would have been highly unusual to be diagnosed early in those days; often years of declining health preceeded diagnosis. God bless him.

Freddie is bigger than every God existing or non existing. Feddie is not only Master, he is the Master of all Masters, bigger and better than nothing ever created by humans or gods. You must remember that Freddie Mercury had a throat infection only days before this performance. He was told by a medical Doctor that he shouldn't do it, but Freddie being Freddie, he said...f...k it...and did it anyway. This was addressed in the movie too. So....when you know this, it shows you how well he did in this performance. You should check out other Queen live performances...they were well known for their live shows.

Freddie has a beautiful voice that we all cherish! We feel it in our heart's to alway's defend him, which is only natural when you appreciate everything Freddie Mercury gave us as a whole! As fan's, we should love Freddie also through his sick time's! This happen's to be a time he was i'll and advised not to sing. But he chose to because he didnt want to let his band down, or his fan's. This woman, opened my eye's to thing's in his performance that I wouldn't have ever noticed. So instead of coming to Freddie's defense and telling this woman off, I want to thank her! Rock is gritty, imperfect, less technical and more free-form. The confidence in his delivery completely sells it and it will always be one of my favorite live performances.

This is the best performance of all time. PERIOD.

As a classically trained musician, I think it’s so hard for us to take a step back, and just enjoy a performance. We’re full of “could’ve, should’ve, would’ve,” and I actually think it really hurts our mentality, and ultimately, our performance. Sometimes, the best thing to do is just sit back and enjoy the show, regardless of the genre. He had this audience practically eating out of his hand, despite he was fighting off a throat infection. The performance rush with that set had to be unbelievable.

Please note that I’m not meaning this criticism. A lot of this come from my personal experience. If I try to think about every little thing, I lose the feeling of the enjoyment of performing (the whole being perfect thing). We don’t know what he was thinking on stage, at the time, although he looked like he was having the time of his life.

He owned that stage...and had a voice from Heaven..Even a bad day didn't take away from his awesomeness..He wasn't just a singer..He was poetry in motion....A true performer in every sense of the word....Mr. Fahrenheit😘

I love her honest opinions .throughout she constantly gives him amazing props . She points out all the technical reasons he is not singing like a classically trained opera singer , then goes on to correctly say “ It doesn’t matter because he has such great charisma and is such a great showman . I think Freddie would enjoy this review . He admired opera and opera singers and it is obvious that She feels the same about him

Well said. He wasn't a great singer because he had a pristine voice. He was a great singer because he used the voice he had to pour out the song with electricity and authenticity. There's nothing technical about that or about the way most great rock or pop singers sing. Elvis, Roy Orbison, Don Henley, Chris Cornell and not that many others really have/had beautiful male voices. There are way more great singers who DON'T have voices that are technically "good" but know how how to sing (any of the Beatles, Mick Jagger, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley and on and on and on). I'm dating myself with these references, but so be it.

You can see that he was struggling when you compare it to this performance which was analysed by the same opera singer. No infection and also better equipment ... all the fans there were also Queen fans not like Live Aid where he had to carry them along with him - which he did like nobody else ever could. Was lucky to be there . By the way the sound equipment was **** and got worse as the day went on - ruining some performances all together . I love your reviews. I was stationed in Europe when I was in the Army when this took place. I saw this live aid. The sound was completely nuts, like all festivals, the sound engineers did a throw & go and were struggling to push the PA to be heard over the crowd when Queen took the stage and began their performance. They were using wedge monitors, no in ear monitors. Imagine trying to play and sing in that roar!

Hearing his voice always elicits emotions from me.... I tear up whenever I hear "Who wants to Live Forever"

I saw them in Marbella on August 5, 1986. It was the penultimate concert for Queen. I'm proud to say it, and it's something I'll take to the grave.

There is no bigger perfomance than this and never will be in the history of music

Freddie Mercury was absolutely in his element when out there performing live on stage. He really loved the interaction with his public and his fans. And nobody does it better than him.

Really liked your take on this performance, your breakdown of his voice was really good, when you realize that he had a throat infection it confirms what you heard, he was not singing at the top of his game, that said he did extremely well considering. They were good, but remember how many tremendous bands there were in the day.

We did what Freddie wanted. He raised his hand we got up. Can you imagine if you could bottle that kind of charisma ? 😍🥰

Freddie was a performer with one of the best natural voices of all times.

Freddie sings from his heart....and we feel it.

Linor have you heard him sing Barcelona with the opera singer Montserrat Caballe? Its a pretty powerful performance.

saw the movie recently and have binging on Queen. got here and do wonder about her reaction to Barcelona. Queen and Freddie Mercury such a rare jewel to music. probably influenced all of the good music in the last 40 years.

We all agree, that Freddie Mercury is a legend. She's NOT criticizing, but analyzing. The techniques, the vocal range, the performance. Her comfort zone is a much more different genre. Let's appriciate the efforts she put's into this. Thank you Linor, well done.

How impressed and in love she looks at Freddie. I still am today. I was very lucky to have seen Queen live four times back then. Nobody can take that from me :-) Greetings from Germany. You are doing very well!

People with negative comments to the reactions are just butt hurt and have no idea what kind of training and experience professional vocalists and singers go through.

Interesting analysis. A couple of points: 1. Freddie suffered from vocal nodules he developed early in his career from singing with a rock band. They could flare up from time to time. Sadly, rock singers from the 60s and 70s often suffered from nodules due to bad rehearsal spaces and the feeling you needed to sing over the drums and the amplified guitar. As he stated in a later interview, this is why he never wanted to sing in musical shows (on Broadway or the West End, for example) due to the nature of having to do a show every night. He admitted it would tax his voice due to the nodules, and in Queen he tended to drop notes or let Roger Taylor, the drummer, handle the higher notes live so he wouldn't burn out. 2. Early in Queen's career, Freddie was often criticized by the press for having too high/smooth of a voice. I do believe he worked to develop that raspy edge to high part of his chest voice to suit the rock sound. It also came naturally due to the vocal nodules, and I think at least in part he smoked to try and encourage that sound in his voice. In the studio, he was certainly a magician with the voice.

He was having problems with his throat nodules, performed against doctors advice dancing around moving around I would have been out of breath in the first song he is absolutely amazing‼️ he is the best still to this day‼️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I was introduced by a friend back in college (about 6 or 7 years ago) to Led Zeppelin and Queen and was (and still is) blown by their music. I've been on a Queen again playlist since the movie came out.

Still get a little choked up when I see this particular performance. I love Freddie's voice but you're correct he doesn't give his best vocal performance but you didn't care because it touched your heart. That's what music must always be about. He had so much charisma on stage he could sing less than he was capable of and it just didn't matter. He touched the heart. He had power here, no doubt, but he avoided the damaging higher notes due to the illness mentioned by others previously. Drummer Roger Taylor is also a great singer for Queen. Brian May, the guitarist, has a surprisingly great singing voice as well. Brian sang a great cover of the Rainbow hit (by Russ Ballard) Since You Been Gone that's pretty stellar. Saw it here on KZread. Worth looking up and maybe reviewing. Cool to discover Freddie and Roger were not the only great lead singers in Queen. I think in an interview Brian said every member of Queen sang lead vocals on at least one track on each of Queen's albums. (Roger Taylor's biggest hit that he sang with Queen was "I'm in Love With My Car." Check that out and see what you think. Neither Roger nor Brian are as operatic as Freddie, but great voices, both of them.)

Honestly this is a great reaction, everyone always reacts at the crowd side but you reacted as a singer knowing the techniques and before I watched that live aid concert I didn't know he was sick either but I could also tell he wasn't as his best that day, yet he gave a great performance I hope you can react to more live videos because I love when people appreciate Freddie's voice and his techniques. The movie timing of HIV/AIDS was incorrect (on purpose for the movie storyline). He would not be diagnosed until April 1987, 2 years after this concert.

As a self-taught musician for 10 years who then went into formal music training in college I can tell anyone who hasn't experienced both worlds that this video is fantastic as an analysis of natural, self-taught technique from the standpoint of classical, orthodox music theory and vocal coaching. There is absolutely NO reason to criticize her, because she is NOT "criticizing" your Hero. She is "critiquing" his vocal technique in this ONE performance. The lady offered several disclaimers and qualifiers in an attempt to put her comments into context, but some people are simply too shallow to get it. To these nit-wits, only the most shallow, superficial interpretations are possible. good/bad, pretty/ugly, big/little, right/wrong. Do yourself a favor and consider the possibility that life is more nuanced and intricate than that. This intelligent, elegant lady simply is critiquing Freddie's performance from the perspective of a classically trained vocalist. And I think she does a fantastic job.

That said even with a bad throat he's better than many but he said it himself that he is much better than this single performance and if you don't agree with the vocal catch then agree with the man himself. I'm pretty sure Freddie knew himself and his talents better than you.

Agreed. She literally stated she needed to close her eyes because this is a perfect performance, and that was tricking her into thinking of the vocals as perfect. This was a live rock performance. Freddie Mercury was more than a singer, he was a performer that could have thousands eating out of his hand. She even says she feels silly criticizing Freddie Mercury because of his talent. Vocally, this was not his best performance and he still rocked the stadium. His bad day is still pretty damn good.

Excellent reaction and review! I did the same thing, I watched the movie then watched the live performance. The more I'm learning about Queen the more my heart loves Freddie and their music. I wish I had appreciated it more when I was a young girl, but I did turn up the volume everytime they came on the radio!😊👍💯💥

I’ve watched dozens of reaction videos to Queen and I’m fairly certain these are bots. There are various comments across multiple videos that all seem to come from similar accounts (full name, no profile picture, no content) with a similar writing style. Why this is I have absolutely no idea, but it would certainly be strange if they were all coincidental.

Don’t be embarrassed. I’m 40 years old and I saw the movie first too. I just think it’s wonderful that new generations are falling in love with Queen.

I love that she talks about Freddie in the present tense, which makes me feel that he is still with us.

Day doe, day doe Day doe, day doe Alright!!! Such excitement and genuine awe in that "alright" Just as queen had the pinnacle moment of the show, that is to me the pinnacle moment of their performance. I just love the look on his face.

Even in 2019 this is still the best live performance by any vocal group ever!! Freddie Mercury was singing with a throat infection against his doctors wishes, but he did it anyway for the starving people in Ethiopia. Freddie Mercury could sing the phonebook and sound absolutely wonderful as he did when he was full-blown AIDS and singing on his deathbed. This man loved to sing and that’s what kept him living for 4 1/2 years after his diagnosis more so than the medication. He kept wanting to make music and even when he could not physically get around, he told Brian May and the guys to write him anything to take home and he would use a drum machine. In 1995 the remaining bandmembers release their last album after he had been gone for about four years and it went straight to number one. His voice got better year after year and I would love if you could see him saying with the soprano opera singer.. BARCELONA!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

He had a throat infection during the concert and then...the diagnosis that came later still chokes up everyone. Through all that time he compensated and was arguably the best to ever grace the stage.
