The iconic engine that will become an icon in the future. The last real BMW engine!
this video is a gift. thank you very much
I watch so many utube videos on the M54, and this one is without doubt the best tutorial on the timing procedure currently available, well done CRANK you put together a highly informative clearly spoken and easy to follow guide, awesome job fella, love the fact that you decided to leave your mistake in to..Looking forward to more content from you..THANK YOU SO SO MUCH..Ignore the guy who gave you a thumbs down, he obviously drives a milk float..lol

Thanks Ian! I really appreciate the positive feedback. Most of the thumbs down are because of my bad English, which is understandable. I guess is really annoying from time to time, but no bad feelings :)

@@crank3646 your English is great fella, maybe a little work on pronunciation of numbers/value but hey you even put those those up on screen anyway.. keep up the good work buddy, meanwhile i am getting back to changing the last 18 of my valve stem seals...all done with the head still attached to the block IN THE CAR!!!!...NOT FUN BUT DO 'ABLE'

Man this video saved my ass when it came to the lower timing chain guides! I thought I was gonna have to remove the whole cylinder head :')
Thank you! very well detailed assembling steps.
Thank you for this helpful Video. Here is what I learned from my experience: Crank is right to suspect his torque down of the vanos plate was way too loose. If you look around you find 2 things. First you need the alignment tool if possible. 1. you put crank on its mark, 2. set the can shafts so the squares at rear are set with the holes up and centered on plane with the cylinder head (that's what the official BMW lock plate does .. but you can do without that if you're careful). 3.) I'm not sure why you should use that clunky chain tensioner when you can just put the spring loaded original back in .. I think it does the same thing, and you have to put it back in anyway. 4.) be sure to put the chain tensioner in at 10:50 .. because once you have the chain in you won't have clearance to insert it later. I learned this the hard way. 5.) the spring length difference on the tensioner is pretty much meaningless. Its a big, crude machine and all it cares about is that the chain remains tight.
Thank you. I already knew a lot .. but Now I've learned a lot more. thanks!
Great work, keep it up!
So glad you made this video. I am in the midst of doing the rebuild and I am just waiting on my upgraded oil pump. I have the car totally apart and I have been looking for videos. Thank you for taking the time.

Nice instruction! Can you make an instruction Video for installing the tensioner of the oil pump chain. And where I can buy this upgrade set?

Ultimately Crank you save us a lot of hard earned money..thanks for the preciseness you display to the engine ..the double Vanos system is rather sophisticated ; I lost power bank1 exhaust valve big hole; 2002 330 000+ klms..just reassembling on my own and mainly with your guidance and my experience... congratulations

Interestingly, I find in reassembling the vanos parts on the exhaust camshaft that the splined sleeve is missing other/or I have the splined shaft ok and the the exhaust camshaft secondary sprocket: now, have you ever seen where the splined sleeve has been attached to the secondary sproket and made as one piece..this seems to be what I have
thankyou for you guide 😎👍
Well done
Great vid👍👍
Good job
Pretty well documented and explained. Only tiny mention .The 15Nm to 20Nm won't make any difference as the metal relaxes after initial torque. Best practice is to remove and re tight the bolt to recommend torque 👍🏻
Thanks, great video! Is there any way to check if it's adjusted correctly, without removing everything and installing the adjustment tool?
Is it possible to install the both the chain guides without removing the timing covers?
Where did you get that long blue handled ratchet that's nice
good video I followed neatly but now with engine running and I put on time crankshaft is on time and exhaust side camshaft is only inlet camshaft is not on time where is it wrong Help me
You are a superman
Great job.! If I were to replace the timing chain cover's gasket with the engine in the car, since the cover is sandwiched between the head and oil pan, can it be removed without lowering the oil pan?

It is possible, but is not recommended
Late to the show but is this something you need the engine out of the car for or can I just drop the radiator

Do you ever tried it working it on a car. Looks easy
What degree is fire time for 100kw?
Question. So I recently replaced the timing chain guides on my m54 since mine were broken. Somehow the chain got bumped a tooth on the crank sprocket and I didn’t realize this until I reassembled the engine and started it. Now at TDC, the cams are not in the right place which confirmed my theory. Am I able to pull the timing chain tensioner out of the block and spin the cam gear to realign the cams from the top or won’t that work? I know the crank sprocket is smaller than the cam sprocket but don’t know if they’re equally different so I would be able to move the chain 2 teeth on the cam sprocket?? I guess what I’m asking is if there’s any other way realign the cams without pulling the front cover and moving the chain down one tooth on the crank sprocket? I’m really trying to avoid that as the engine is back in the car and fully assembled minus the valve cover

Yes you can set up your timing only by removing the valve cover and the vanos unit. Just lock the crankshaft and after that set the timing on the camshafts as it properly should be
Wow! your video is more indepth than many others I've seen on this procedure. Thanks for sharing your skills. Should the main timing chain guide wobble a little from side to side ? Mine seems to have some play in the sideways direction but does move forwards and backwards easily.
@crank3646

It is normal the plastic guides to have some play. They don't fit super tight in their places

@@crank3646 Thanks, that's a relief, I watched how you installed them and can see what you mean with the push fit installation.
Sehr schwierig 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ Aber du hast gut gemacht 👍 👍
Do you know that intake vanos will not work properly when installed like shown on the video? The intake vanos cup teeth should be barely visible when disengaged. It looks like you missed one tooth on the intake sprocket. It's easy to inspect if you have a full 40 degree movement in INPA.
@crank3646

No issues at all. Have done it on many cars, all of them are operating with the full movement of the both vanoses
@BoostOrDie101
9 ай бұрын
@@crank3646 I have done this many times as well. Try it next time and observe the difference in engine torque. I'm sure I can't convince you, even if I give you a bag full of evidence. But for the sake of argument. Make an experiment simply by loosing the intake Vanos cup so it will be set in the maximum out position. Then push the intake piston in the Vanos unit to the maximum. Next install the Vanos and see how much of the movement has been lost.
How many lb/ft does the tensioner have?
By your opinion what engine is better to get m47 or n47 i heard horror stories about n47 . We are talking to buy a car at 125.000km max . Mersi predvaritelno .

Приветствую. Подскажи что за проставка.?
very good video
Good video, but the S54 M3 has a double chain hence the stronger tensioner. won't that cause premature wear on the guides and chain as the m54 has a single one. ;-)

Колко стува тази процедура?
Има ли начин да сменя веригите отдолу, без да вадя двигателя при M52TUB20? Мога ли да разглобя предницата вместо това?
@crank3646
2 жыл бұрын
По принцип не се вади мотор за тази процедура. Предницата също не се пипа, само перката като махнеш с дифузьора се открива достатъчно място за работа
I want to thank you dor your time making such a good video❤❤❤🌹🌹
Здравей! Налага се да сменям вериги и водачи но за целта трябва да е свален картера за да сваля капака на веригата… Има ли вариант да се свали капака само на веригата без да пипам картера/главата и да няма последици? Благодаря !
