My only advice to someone else doing this job, is DON'T mess with removing the dipstick tube bolt. I didn't need to, you just need to loosen the motor mount bracket enough to rotate it away from the block enough to wiggle the old timing belt out and new one in. Also, I would recommend putting the crank pulley back on before rotating the engine by hand with the crank bolt. I did not, and the crank bolt bottomed out in the crankshaft and damaged the threads slightly.

Thanks for video. Everything went great. Here is valuable advice for anyone. I also marked old belt with white timing marks, then transferred white marks to new belt. This helps to make sure you got all the teeth perfect and tight. If you install both belts using the correct pulley sequence, and keep them taught, it is easy to do, no difficulty stretching/pulling, and all white marks are perfect. Ignore the advice of some people to set it up a notch off. Pull the tensioner wheel snug before pulling pin, if you are unsure. If you follow the correct pulley sequence, nothing moves. I used the start the engine trick with a breaker bar braced against wheel control arm to loosen crankshaft bolt, and used the old serpentine belt wrapped around AC and alternator to tighten it. Both worked better than any impact gun or pulley holding tools which kept failing. Only issue I had was new water pump wouldn't fit flush against block. Tried a second water pump, same result. This was due to the bottom dowel on engine block that holds water pump/gasket in place not fitting in new water pump replacement design. Had to use dremel tool and 60 grit sanding bit to micro grind the bottom dowel hole in the new water pump just a micron larger. Then it fit perfectly flush. Make sure you know all the torque specs of the bolts. Also, number all your water pump bolts! There are 8 water pump bolts, but in 4 different lengths, don't mix them up. I put each bolt in a numbered tackle box tray with post it notes. Label all your other bolts for different parts and put in individual trays. Label your diagrams so you know where the random long bolts go.

Just changed the timing belt, water pump, ect on my 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2.7 liter V6. Same engine and mounting, no doubt. Can't thank you enough for the great tutorial. The belts back on were a real pain, tight. There were no issues (as some describe) with the timing being off after you pull the pin on the tensioner when you use the method he describes. One shot and done. The surpentine belt was tough to fit back on. I had to loosen the tensioner, get the belt behind it and then tighten up the mounts. All else went as to be expected on any first timer job of this caliber. And the old belts? My timing belt had 80k on it (flirting with distaster) and although it looked fine, I know now it had stretched and would eventually jump teeth. Savings = $700+. Thanks again!

I must say, I have never changed a timing belt in my life, nor have I ever really looked into it. I own a 2003 Hyundai Sonata V6 2.7. l watched your video and felt comfortable enough to attempt to change my timing belt. I additionally changed the water pump, pulleys, tensioner and serpentine belt. I cranked the key with a prayer and to my surprise......everything went great. Its running as great as ever. I finished the job in about 7-8 hours with short breaks about a month ago. Thank you so much for sharing this video you did a wonderful job!! You explained it well enough for this KZread mechanic (lol) to follow. Again, thank you

Thanks for the video. Changed the belt on my 04 Tiburon with 207,000 miles for the first time. Your video made the process very simple. My only addition would be to mark the old belt and pulleys before removal. You can then take the old belt and transfer the marks to the new belt. This makes alignment of the new belt simple because you make sure that your have the same number of teeth between the pulleys. Thanks again.

I was right in the middle of this job and couldn't for the life of me get the motor mount bracket off, but this video helped me find the little 12mm bolt under the cam pulley. Thanks. This is the easiest timing belt I've ever done. The only struggle was getting the serpentine belt tensioner and bolts in and out. All in all, shop time is 2.8hrs on this, taking my time with a lunch break I took more like 3 hours.

Well, I did the job today. Thanks to the help of your video. Took me 6 hours.. The hardest part of the job was re-securing the dipstick tube to the front of the engine. Had a heck of a time getting the bolt back in. Finally taped the bolt to a socket and was able to get it installed. The rest was easy. Just had to remember the reverse of the tear-down.. Thanks again.. It works great. No more leaking water pump. The Timing below looked fine, but I replaced it anyway just to be sure..

This job is a nightmare. I am doing it on an 05 with 110k. The harmonic balancer/crank pulley is stuck on so I had to use a claw puller tool and caused damage to it. The water pump was an absolute pain to get on because the block is warped and the part is flat, so I left the gasket off because I had no luck. I easily forgot what bolts were used because they were not all the same. So good luck with that! 💀

Just as a side note since you didn't mention it (Maybe you got lucky lol) Each one of the water pump bolts on those Delta 2.7's and the Beta 2.0's are different lengths. You have your A's, B's, C's and one D I think. If you use a C in an A hole, it will bottom out and possibly break off or worse crack your block. Had one in the shop and the customer didn't know, tried to do it himself and had no Idea there is a diagram for where each length bolt goes. I usually mark them by color when I pull them out, but you can always use a micrometer to measure the sizes and match it up with the specs. The only reason I knew ahead of time was because I have the factory service manual, but I know not everyone has the money or access to that kind of stuff lol

I’ve seen a problem with the tensioner arm, and I think you missed it also. Always use a drift to remove and then clean and lube the tensioner sleeve inside the tensioner arm. Failure to do can result in the belt slipping several teeth over time and a camshaft and cat efficiency code. I always replace the tensioner also and do not reuse the old. They do fail and this is a critical part of the engine not worth saving a few $$.

This might have just happened to me. I did new timing set, tensioner, pullies and water pump. Put 2000 miles on the car no issues. Driving to work the other day felt like it was down on power. Get off the highway at a stoplight and feel a slight miss and surging every few seconds. Get to work, cel and hear valve ticking. Code was cam position sensor. End of the day I started it and the ticking was real bad. Pulled upper timing cover and it was off 4 teeth and found a cut on the inner side of the belt. Had it towed home but haven’t had time to open it up and see what happened. Guessing tensioner failed, caused the belt to loose tension, rub on something and jump time. 😢

+David Kahyun Park I put link in description for pulley holders. I re-watched most of the video, did not see exactly which pulley you want to hold, crank pulley I am assuming. OTC universal tool should work.

You just wiggled off the damper. On my 2000 sonata the damper wont come off. with the 22mm bolt removed the damper is still trying to take the t belt cover and camshaft gear with it. Is that dowel pin keeping them firmly together. Should I drill out the dowel pin?cant believe that dowel pin holding the two together so tight

I need some serious help guys. I can not get the crankshaft pulley completely off. I removed the nut with my impact drive,r with ease. But, I can not pull the pulley out. It literally pulls forward a little bit, then it stops, it almost feels as if something is locking it/preventing it from being pulled completely out. any IDEAS ?

I've never done a belt before. What were you looking for when you turned the engine? The belt to stay lined up or the marks to realign. Thanks

  • @faize28

Yes you don't want your marks to be different because if a tooth is off you run the risk of bending your valves when turning on the engine and thus you bought a new engine

I understood everything except the pin you're talking about in the tensioner. But I think once I get into my work and have it in front of me, I'll understand. Does anyone understand it?

Il answer my own question to anyone doing this at home if you find a thin enough Allen key it’ll work perfectly as a pin to hold back the tensioner.
