It’s really a shame that Gustav I (Vasa) of Sweden don’t get to have a portrait, eventhough he ruled for 37 years and was/is the most important figure in Swedish history. Also his grandson Gustavus Adolphus is the father of modern warfare so he probably deserve one aswell

Despite how some current claimants to defunct thrones today, aren't even from their own country ( sometimes ) I feel like Catherine The Great is the best example of how a foreigner can be a great ruler, given the fact she was the best Empress of Russia ( one of the greatest Russian rulers overall ) even though she was German.
As an Norwegian I found it strange that we were not included in the chart. We have the old viking kingdom from 865 (872) Harald 1 until Margarete 1 gained power in 1388. Then we were together with Denmark or Sweden until 1905 and has had a new monarchy sins then. That's make 523 years + 117 years of a kingdom (yes some of the oldest are more mythological but still), which makes a total of 640 years and therefore more than half of the timespan in the chart. I just found it a bit odd also considering it's one of the few remaining monarchy.

Probably the main reason is that most of the time Norway was held a as a personal union with either Sweden or Denmark (or both), so including Norway would mean adding a whole extra column for just a bit of extra info early on and then a bit in the end. I would definitely have included it but I understand the maker's aesthetic sensibilities if he chose not to.

This is a nice chart, but as a Norwegian I must state that the lack of Norway is a major flaw. The Norwegian kingdom has roots back to the year 1000 ce, it has been in a union with both Sweden and Norway. It would fit nicely in between them. It has not been a major player, but it was rich on resources, and it was sought after, and it stands to reason that it could hav been a power in its own right. Anyways. Kudos on good chart, and congratulations on the win.

so many great charts were featured in this contest. it's amazing just how much valuable information such little space is able to convey, and all while not feeling overwhelming too.
Nice work, but as a French I must say quite a few things reads a bit wrong : - Huges Capet is definitively not the first King of France, same thing could be said about King of Scotland. - There are a few major Europeans conflict missing which I can't see any justification for, mostly Napoleonic wars but also the Franco-Dutch war of 1672-1678 - The green and red dots system feels way to arbitrary in some places and can't really describe the nuances of winner and loosers in some wars. Here's a few examples - The Spain succession war : The colors in Spain are just wrong, The Habsurg did not win the Spain succession war, HRE is not really a winner unless HRE=Austria, France and Spanish Bourbon had the military superiority in this war and are still mostly a winner in the end, even though they had to give up territories. - The nine year war : only real winner here is England, everything else is highly debatable as this war is more of a stalemate.
Awesome creation and thanks for allowing us (your fans) to be involved in your content!
How do the French Revolution/Napoleonic wars not get a bar? Seems like an oversight. Definitely shaped european history in major ways, and the end of which was the start of the belle epoch. Crimean war is a pretty important turning point too afaik, but maybe not as earth shattering as some of the others
@DWestheim

Yeps but this part of Europe is always forgotten... even though here many important things happened. Plus it is kinda stupid not to mention even the ottoman empire because it was a pain in the a$$ for half of Europe and conquered the *forgotten* part of the continent. But yeah the wester Europe is "cooler" for most of the consumers.
That's some great chart! .... BUT.... The omission of Norway as a minor kingdom kinda irks me when at the same time Belgium - mostly famous for getting overrun by Germany from time to time - joins the chart at the very bottom. Norway's history is complicated and for most of a thousand years they were ruled by either Denmark or Sweden, but there would even have been room to at least include the three kings of Norway since the restoration of Norway's independence beginning with Haakon VII in the right-most column (e.g. ex-France), thus ending the list with all seven kingdoms still extant in Europe. Yes, my OCD is severe and I am barely functioning as a person.
You should be able to sell one to every school in Europe. Great help with their history lessons.

It would be interesting to see a timeline of the "five families" of the NY mafia. Not a true family tree though occasionally a father to son or relative to relative transition occurred here and there. But it'd be neat to see how the five families started and evolved to what they are today. You could even talk to michael franzese and get his input/assistance.
I don't understand how a non-comprehensive chart could win the contest. I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but excluding kingdoms at random, especially one like Norway which still exists, sound arbitrary to me. The Kingdom of Norway might not be relevant like some of the others, but they settled Iceland and Greenland, discovered America and founded Dublin. They should've been on the chart, especially if you're going to charge money for it. Just my two cents.
That is a really well designed and executed chart; you can see why it won the contest. Well done!

It's a shame the creator started the Scottish royal line in the mid 11th century. That was when it was officially called Scotland, previously it had been called the Kingdom of Alba, which still means Scotland but in Scottish Gaelic, so essentially just a change of language. The first king of Scotland (Alba) was Cináed I (Kenneth I) in 843. But apart from that, it's a really cool chart!

France should have had it’s line started in the late 400’s as Francia, as it technically still the same kingdom, even though it changed its name from West Francia to France in the 1200’s. But the kingdom didn’t change, just the name. Plus you would see Francia split into 3 kingdoms, with East Francia & Middle Francia eventually becoming the Holy Roman Empire. Even though all of Francia was the HRE under Charlemagne and his son.

@@kes1709 I haven’t even started watching the video yet but I saw the comment from @Ryan Voll which got my attention. Then I read your response and like you I agree with both of you despite not having watched it yet. Everything related to European history, European Monarchs, the New World is always and anything over the last 1000 years is very much Anglo-centric mixed with propaganda to favor England and disparage and discredit everyone else. Look how they refer to Henry viii and his bastard daughter. They believe they were the greatest monarchs ever. Despite Henry being an authoritarian dictator who became a megalomaniac and committed heresy (for that period in time) by breaking with the Roman Catholic Church and declaring himself the supreme head of the Church of England. Both he and his bastard daughter Elizabeth murdered a lot of people during their long reign. Had Henry and Elizabeth been French, Spanish, Russian, German, Polish…etc. I am sure they would not be as kind and tolerant. Anyway, sorry about that. The French and Spanish know that the British (English) have always been manipulative, deceitful and will never do anything that won’t benefit them. Unfortunately I think that Americans and Canadians inherited some of their traits.

Awesome chart indeed. I'm just a bit confused at one point in the english column. Matilda, the daughter of King Henry I and rightful heir to the throne fought with Stephen I of Blois over the throne of England during the Anarchy. Shouldn't she at least be mentioned in the chart? BUT I'm relieved that Queen Jane Grey is included. Many people forget about her bcs she only "reigned" for nine days. And also King John I of France who only lived and "reigned" for six days.

Awesome chart! I just wish we had the addition of more portraits and the Kingdom of Norway. Such a missed opportunity. Love the video though! Update 7/16/2022: I thought about this chart some more and after some reflection and reading the comments, I just can't get behind buying or recommending this product. While the concept is amazing, unfortunately, the execution wasn't. There are just a few too many glaring errors and omissions for me to add this chart to my collection of the other amazing charts from Matt. This is such a shame since the chart looks amazing, and the idea is so cool! I would recommend that Matt and the chart creator do some proofreading and edits on the chart, followed by a reprint. I believe that would fix many of the concerns people have regarding the mistakes and omissions. Anyways, I still love the concept!
That's a really interesting view. I love it! 💖 And I totally understand the choice to not include all kingdoms at this point. You can always do more and then end up never completing the project. If you want to you can publish updated versions later. And anyone can make a companion chart that includes relations to the kingdoms they think should have been included.

Hey, can you also make a video on why letter C exists?
A new video idea for your channel- how does one even become a King in the first place? Like every dynasty, mush have founded by a non-royal person who because of his sheer will and power the circumstances, the public, and the army favored him over the other, right? Then every dynasty founder would be a self-proclaimed monarch, and because the people accepted them and their descendants, the dynasty became royal and head of the state. (25/7/22)
Super film
I know it is very difficult to show all 'European Monarchs' but I do think there are some unfair omissions.... Norway was an important kingdom in its own right since the early 900's (later part of the Kalmar Union), the (high-) kings of Ireland seems to have fallen of the edge as well - they formed / forming part of UK/GB today. Spain was not just Aragon and Castile - there is Leon (major) and Navarre & Granada (minor) - all in the arms of dominion of Spain today. (not coat of arms) The Lithuanian / Polish Commonwealth is also not shown... I know it is hard to show a lot of information in a succinct way but as a European this is oversimplifying it too much in my opinion. Sorry! Re-reading my post and editing it! Sorry - I would like to add that the creator has done an amazing job!!! It is very hard to pack a lot of complicated history in something understandably and succinct. It's more my love for history for nit-picking here. Well done and congrats for wining!!

The timeline is off with both France and Spain regardless of whether names changed or not. Especially that of France because the name itself remains a constant whether it is Francia, Kingdom of the Franks, East, Middle, West Francia and so on. I could be wrong but I do believe that France as a kingdom is founded in the late 400s. As for Spain it begins in 718 where a bunch of nobles form an alliance to form the first Christian Kingdom of Hispania (aka España) as el Reino de Asturias which is when the reconquista to take back their land from the Muslim invaders of the Iberia peninsula. When King Alfonso III el Magno dies, the kingdom of Asturias is divided between his three sons. García I inherited León, Álava and the County of Castilla which become the Kingdom of León and the ruling kingdom. Ordoño II inherited Galicia Fruela II inherited Asturias Around 1065 the nobles of Castilla break away from the Kingdom of León to form the new Kingdom of Castilla. It is important to understand that these territories were descendants of the nobles and working class that formed an alliance back in the early 700s. In 1260 the kingdom of León and the Kingdom of Castilla merge together to form the Corona de Castilla (Crown of Castile). As for the current name, Reino de España dates back to what what the Phoenicians referred to as i-spn-ya, fast forward to the Roman occupation and using the Latin alphabet give it the name of Hispania dating back to 218 BC. The point I’m trying to make is that contrary to popular belief, European Monarchy does not begin with England. It is arrogant and dismissive of the other kingdoms. I know the English have done everything in their power to dictate history or better said, their version of history. They have mastered the art of pushing a very Anglocentric view of world history. They are great at spreading disinformation so long as it benefits them while putting others down or not even acknowledging them. But the truth is that it begins in France not England and to prove it all you have to do is look at the three lions as England’s coat of arms. I mean, one can lie by saying that England was teeming with lions back then. I thought it was important to write this information regarding the poster you are selling to people because it’s completely inaccurate and keeps the lies alive. I think you produce good work but it’s not fair for you to sell and profit off of a lie. Just my two cents worth.

Nice chart, but the absence of Rus` and Eastern Rome really hamper this chart. Kingdoms like Hungary and Bohemia had a long history of interaction with the Eastern Romans, and the other Western European kingdoms interacted extensively with Constantinople during the era of the Crusades. Rus`, meanwhile, also interacted heavily with the rest of Europe beyond their immediate neighbours in Poland and Hungary, evidenced by Yaroslav the Wise marrying his children into the ruling houses of Europe (such as Anna, who became Queen of France) and Danylo of Halych, who campaigned in Bohemia and modern-day Austria and had extensive contacts with the Roman Papacy
