    Taking the lower pan off would of made routing the wires ahelluva lot easier. Your video helped a lot and saved me a few bucks instead of having my mechanic do it.

    Perfect video for my next project! Actually it's on an 05 Pro XS so everything looks pretty much the same. I bought an aftermarket motor as well (ARCO). Mine still works but it's rusted out badly!

    Yeah, I was not really setup for filming that day and just used my cell phone. It was easier than I thought it would be. Depending on your specific motor, I am learning that back bolt can be more challenging for some than others though. Thanks.

    if the electric motor goes out, especially if you can tap it and it starts working, you can just replace the brushes.

    I have that same tilt unit that was updated when the original was replaced on an 87 Black Maxx 135. It does not have an o-ring between the motor and gear unit, yet there is an oring between the trim motor base plate and cover. Go figure. My trim motor was solid corrosion yet the trim fluid was still bright red as the day it was installed 9 years ago. Another go figure. One issue I have is getting the motor to tilt easily by hand. Spent two hours with a jack getting it a few inches up, then another neighbor came over and the two of them grunted to get it up while I swung the tilt support lever into place. Local Merc dealer said the motor is not available.Will have to buy an aftermarket motor. Any advice? Secondly, is the rear facing yellow screw the fill port? Tension is off when the motor is raised yet mine overflowed fluid when I opened it.

    I cross referenced mine on amazon and on the web and found a few aftermarkets for it. I think I bought that one in the video from Amazon and its been flawless. If you can find the original part number, you can probably find an aftermarket one.

    Chris, Did you ever have an issue with the MPR relay? Thats the relay that shuts the motor off. Just curious if you ever had to replace that relay also?

    Hello. No sir. I tried the relays for the tilt trim first since they were cheap but my issue was the actual motor. It was getting stuck in position.

    Hello. I never really noticed any sluggish behavior but I am sure that could happen. Mine just stopped working at the ramp one day and then started working again a few minutes later. The next couple of times out, it did it again and worse where I wound up tapping on the trim motor to get it working. I knew it was time to replace it. Hope it helps you. Its not that expensive so its probably worth a shot in your situation.

    The general process would be the same. There may be small differences in where the screws are located and where you have to run the wires. However, it should be similar. Hope the video helps you.

    Thanks for the video. I was helping my Dad trouble shoot his, which quit working. We found the wires coming out of the top were broken. I didn't see any other wires, but I see yours come off the bottom. I didn't see if you also had wires on the top. I'm curious what they are, if they aren't the motor wires. I ask because my Dad told me today he dropped it off at the mechanic to have the motor replaced, and they said those weren't the trim motor wires. I'm puzzled because I can't imagine what else they'd be, unless there's a sensor up there and I just didn't see the other wires. Do you know? I can't tell you what year his is, but it's an 80 horse from about 1990.

  • @ccooke70

    @ccooke70

    The relays are pretty cheap and not hard to replace. You can start with the one that controls the up motion. I replaced mine but it did not fix my issue so I had to replace the motor.

    It’s been a while but I think it just came off once the bolts were out. You could have some rust or something if yours is being difficult.

    Christopher Cooke removing the big motor was the wrong choice of words. It looks like I might have to loosen/remove the black bracket that bolts to the jackplate in order to acess one of the bolts.

    Sorry. I've been on the water all day. Just got this message. I looked it up. Looks like the top screws just get into the electronics of the motor but replacing it would still require the removal via the bottom screws. It may be possible to take the insides from the new one and slip them down through the old one and just keep the housing in place. Glad to look at it if you want. Just trying to figure out how to go about it without posting my email here where spam can pick it up. Let me check to see if there is any way to send it. www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=67177

    On my motor it was a bit of a pain also. I used a normal size allen wrench but could only turn it a small amount at a time. I would guess some motors may require the use of allen "socket" type attachments to a ratchet with a swivel angle adapter.

    I’m not sure but I would replace the trim motor if it were mine. If it’s making unusual noises, it may be going bad and could go out on the water which is no fun.
