Wonderful job on the video. Pardon my frustration. I found your video and was ecstatic. I’m smack in the middle of trying to get my trim unit off. It’s all loose except foe the mount plate on the side. I wasn’t aware that needed to come off separately. Makes sense. I have a new electric motor coming tomorrow or Sat. Hopefully that’s the issue and I don’t also need a pump. I’m just about at my wits end with this dang boat. So far after buying a running bass boat that had no issues...I’ve rebuilt the engine completely, new exhaust gaskets, new water pump, you name it. I really need this whole tilt/trim assembly to work. Funny thing is, it was working just fine for like a week. I simply gave it a love tap and installed new relays and like magic it worked flawlessly. Again thanks for the video.

This was THE BEST example on how to remove the entire assembly. I used your example to get my Merc 175 assembly swapped out. There is NO WAY to remove the power trim/tile assembly without loosening the (right) engine bracket to make room for the old assembly to come out and the new one to go in. WELL DONE!!

Well done. The part I desperately needed to see wasn’t shown lol. Never fails! I really needed to see you remove those pins up top. I also needed to see the cables coming apart.

On my 90 HP Merc the trim unit is quickly removed by removing both the upper and lower 3/4" mounting pin. Pin is removed with a brass punch and large hammer. Before removing pin you have to remove a small locking pin that keeps the large pins from coming out. Once the pins are removed, the entire unit drops out without unbolting anything. Fortunately A friend who is a boat mechanic steered me in the right direction. Manual was also great help.

Greg, Where is the locking pin located, and onve removed, how did you get behind the shaft to drive the large pin out? Ive tried every which way and there simply isn't any room between the boat and motor. Thanks!

i somehow figured out, if you remove the reservoir cover and pump, then loosen bottom piece you can wiggle it out without rmeoving motor bolts, but its difficult getting back in like that then tightening the allen bolts on pump and cover... i need to redo mine i will try this way

Great video thanks very much. I'm wondering if you have a video of removing just the electric motor do I have to pull the whole assembly or can I simply replace the motor in the location

Kevin Dechambeau you should be able to replace the motor in that position... I did that before I replaced the whole system

I have a 1992 xri 200 and my electric motor is going out. You can tap it with a hammer(like you would an old starter) and she works fine. I heard you say you replaced that first before you replaced the whole unit. My question is: where you able to get to your motor without removing/loosening the black bracket thats attached to your jackplate?

I was able to loosen the bracket slightly and get the motor out without replacing the whole unit

Hey mate how come you pulled out the steering etc? wouldn't the 3 bolts each side have let you swing the power tilt/trim unit out anyway? Im about to do the same to my 1985 model - and don't wanna do the steering if I don't have to?

Ben Neufeld sorry for the delay, the motor bracket is not wide enough for the trim pump to swing out. It's simply not wide enough on my boat.

I am trying to remove the Mercury 150-horsepower trim motor, but when I raise it by hand, the trim stops halfway up and stops. Even after removing all hydraulic oil, stop halfway up. Do I need to switch manually? Is there any other way ??

  • @kentcourtneyandries9745

first make sure you aren't hitting something on the transom that is binding it up. I would next try manually.

Man I did what you don't want to do I broke mine and replaced it....I am stubborn though. I don't recommend breaking it you should be able to get it out with a chisel and light hammer. it is grooved and you should be able to tap it out. Im sure mine hadn't moved in 20 years

Use a vice grip, continuously twist it (make sure the pin is twisting) and keep pulling and twisting. I don't think you can punch it through, at least I couldn't on my black max 175.

  • @kentcourtneyandries9745

It depends on where the leak is occurring. There is a seal repair kit that is sold on api marine. But i replaced my whole system because my leak burnt up my trim motor so I went ahead and just replaced the whole system.
