    I definitely need to level my lawn. Almost 2 years since I did it. Cutting shorter, I mean short like 1/4 to 1/2" makes this much much easier. And be patient. Zoysia takes from 4 to 7 weeks to recover 100%

    Overall, are you glad you converted your lawn from fescue to zoysia? Do you find it is truly more drought and heat tolerant than fescue? Does it bother you at all that it is brown in the winter? Thanks for your videos!

  • @ccooke70
    @ccooke702 ай бұрын

    Hello. I do like the Fescue look in the winter. However, I find that its prone to turning brown and spotty in the summer unless you are putting down a lot of water if it gets hot. I think both lawns are good and just have different pros and cons. I don't mind the brown in the winter at all but I can see how some people may be bothered by it. To me, its a few months that require zero yard work for me. LOL. I like projects and I like learning so I am glad I did this. I love the way this grass handles these hot summers. My back yard may wind up back to fescue as the trees around my property and neighboring properties produce a lot of shade. I am going to try some strips of zeon there to see how it does but I may wind up back with fescue there.

  • @michaelmiller6843

    @@ccooke70 Thank you! I live in Pennsylvania and my back yard is about 12,000 feet of fescue. However by mid June it is brown from the heat and won't be green again until September. It is too much to water so I was thinking of slowing converting it to Zoysia by killing off an area and out in plugs, then slowly over time put down more and more plugs. My front lawn is much smaller and am able to keep it green all summer by watering. The idea of zoysia and how it repairs itself and would stay green in the hot summer is very tempting!

    Did 150 plug this weekend in NOVA in two spots I needed patching after tree removal. I ordered from same place as you did and all came in looking very good and healthy, most of my lawn is Zoysia so I could have just transplanted some but like you I wanted to see how these Zenith Zoysia worked out. The only thing I wish they would change is the shape of the Zoysia because the plugger is round and the Zoysia base are square but beside that we will see how it turns out next seasons. One of the 50 pack I received already had several plugs that had started to intertwine with each other it was kind of cool to see how they merge.

    Wake Forest, NC here. Much like you, I'm a DIY-guy that knows just enough about turfgrass to either do well, or get in serious trouble. I stumbled across your channel last summer when I started my own Zenith renovation. Also like you, I have had my share of headaches and set backs. I've got about 80% of my 6000 sq ft yard established, but had some severe washout last year that I'm trying to fill in with seed this year. I was hopefull with our 10 day forecast in late April/early May, with highs in the low 80's, so I planted my seed on 5/3. I'm now 3 weeks in and no germination. I reached out to Super-Sod/Patten Seed, and they told me that this roller coaster spring is likely the reason and to give it more time. I'm hoping next week's warm up with kick it into gear! PS, I currently have a mole issue. That little ass is tunneling all over the place. My wife won't let me "take care of it" so I'm stuck trying non-lethal means of making him leave.

    That mole drove me insane last year. I went overboard this year I am sure. I put out a professional grub treatment early then followed up with Grub EX last month. If I see a grub, I am going to go insane. LOL. I tried traps, poison, etc. I was ready to try the jucy fruit treatment some people mention but cold weather moved in and he left. I hope I don't see him this year. Remember to treat any plant beds you have. I found that he was going there quite often after eating all through the yard.

    On the seed/yard, I am sure that the weather is our biggest challenge. From what I have seen over the years, Zoysia will do best when our night temps don't drop below 70s or so. We have 50s right now and have had 40s. I feel that is really holding it back.

    @@ccooke70 I put down some Duocide in April, and went a little heavier in the area that was getting the most activity. From the pattern, it almost looks like he's moving around to find another food source. I may put down another application and see if he moves on. As for the seed, I definitely got fooled with the warm start to May. The problem hasn't necessarily been the daytime temps. You're right, it's the nighttime lows down in the low 50's that is killing me. The growers tell me the soil temps need to be AT LEAST 65° for germination. My daytime soil temps have been hitting 70°, but below 60° at night. Apparently crabgrass doesn't mind the temps as much because it's definitely coming in!
