The significance of the pineapple scene in Only Yesterday is that this is the only time you ever see Taeko’s entire family collectively happy. Their excitement at trying pineapple for the first time actually brings them closer together. And then they eat the pineapple, and _no one like it,_ and you can just feel the happiness dissipating out of this family like a balloon deflating. When I watched the scene I felt my stomach sink when the family just got up and walked away after taking one bite, while Taeko continued sitting there defiantly eating her piece of pineapple. It also showed the hypocrisy of the family because Taeko was constantly ragged on for being a picky eater and wasting food - but meanwhile not only does the family waste food with this pineapple, but then Taeko gets scolded for trying to finish her piece! Like geez, this girl just couldn’t win!

As soon as you introduced the "won't be watching again" tier, i immediately thought of Grave of the Fireflies. Heart wrenching, but required watching for all. Also, thanks so much for giving When Marnie Was There the appreciation it deserves 😭 just another reason I love Hailee Steinfeld

I think Arrietty is a masterpiece, even though the story isn‘t as big as in Spirited Away or Mononoke. The way the world is portrayed from the perpective of the little people, the house, the garden… made me see my everyday environment from a different perspective. The music was so strong in this film and transported a sort of longing, it somehow pushed beyond the film. And the relationship between Arrietty and Sho was somehow unique because there was this bond between them that established even though there wasn‘t that much dialogue… again, it was a feeling that was transported to you by the visuals and the music. And the ending was great, not the Disney-happy-ending we are used to but a bitter-sweet one. For me, the film is perfect, it captures the challenges of growing up and finding a place in a big world.

Finally someone said it! It's not particularly epic or flashy, and that's okay. As much as I adore movies like Princess Mononoke, I really think so much of Ghibli's strengths lie in their quieter, subtler films, and we tend to overlook them.

3:20 so the dub and subs translate to raccoons but the characters in the movie are actually tanuki which are a species native to japan that are often called raccoon dogs because of their appearance (no actual relation to raccoons tho). They show up a lot in Japanese folklore and, like kitsune, often have shape shifting abilities and are playful/mischievous (unlike kitsune they’re usually depicted as lazy and not super bright). There’s also a weird thing about them having giant testicles which is unfortunately some very important context needed for the movie

This is the top 5 from someone that watched every Ghibli film for the first time as an 18 year old during lock-down: 5. *Princess Mononoke* (Epic with such interesting characters, also possibly the best scores Ghibli film overall) 4. *Spirited Away* (No explanation needed, a masterpiece, and “One Summer Day” is one of the most gorgeous tracks I’ve heard in a film) 3. *The Wind Rises* (I don’t give a shit about planes, however the ethical complexities that you brought up regarding this film and the main character made this film incredible nuanced, also the track “Nahoko: An Unexpected Meeting” makes me tear up every time) 2. *Only Yesterday* (I guess I understand why’d it be too slow for some, but this just hit me so hard, and yes the pineapple scene worked for me) 1. *The Tale of the Princess Kaguya* (At least a top 3 animated film of all time for me, a heartcrushing masterpiece that also happens to be one of the most beautifully animated films ever as well) Honourable mentions: The Grave of the Fireflies, Kiki’s Delivery Service and My Neighbour Totoro

I feel like it’s rare to see someone put When Marnie was There so high but I’m really glad that it is because it’s one of my favourites too. I’d say that the only major disagreement we have is Only Yesterday which is a film I love. HOWEVER, I equally recognise that it’s not for everyone so I’m just used to it not rating that highly My absolute favourites (or the S-Tier films) are these… Whisper of the Heart, Kiki’s Delivery Service, When Marnie was There, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke

I watched whisper of the heart for the first time only this year after I turned 40. I got my undergrad and grad degrees in music and music education only to get eaten up by the corporate world afterward. Whisper of the heart reminded me how much I miss the grueling passion and pain that comes from wanting to create a great piece of art. Shizuku’s desire of creation reminded me of my heart’s deepest desire to create. I’ve watched it almost every day since (probably at least 100 times now). It’s definitely a film that will hit different depending at which point in your life you watch it.

For me, Totoro is a masterpiece. Because when I was really young, my parents would argue a lot. But my dad would always stick me and my brother into a different room and put on Totoro. The movie would whisk me away into a magical place where there was no fighting. Also this isn't really important but I was convinced that I lived in a Totoro house. Squirrels used to live in my walls so sometimes acorns would be all over the floor and we had a huge tree in a forest preserve right outside our house.I remember I actually cried when my dad lost the file for the movie. So I'm probably just biased but Totoro is a masterpiece of a movie. ❤

Great video!! The first movie by Hayao Miyazaki I saw was Warriors of the Wind in 1988 on VHS... (It's a heavily edited version of Nausicaa.) The first Studio Ghibli film I saw was My Neighbor Totoro in 1989... Only Yesterday is my top favorite movie of all time!! It introduced me to so many different kinds of wonderful world music!! Here's my ranking... 01. Only Yesterday (1991) 02. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) 03. Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) 04. Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986) 05. My Neighbor Totoro (1988) 06. Whisper of the Heart (1995) 07. Spirited Away (2001) 08. On Your Mark (1995 music video/short) 09. When Marnie Was There (2014) 10. Pom Poko (1994) 11. From Up on Poppy Hill (2011) 12. The Cat Returns (2002) 13. Ponyo (2008) 14. Grave of the Fireflies (1988) 15. Princess Mononoke (1997) 16. The Secret World of Arrietty (2010) 17. The Wind Rises (2013) 18. The Tale of The Princess Kaguya (2013) 19. Porco Rosso (1992) 20. Howl's Moving Castle (2004) 21. My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999) 22. Tales from Earthsea (2006) 23. Ocean Waves (1993 TV Movie) 24. Earwig and the Witch (2020 TV Movie) 25. The Red Turtle (2016) ?? The Boy and the Heron (2023)

Here are my inputs: Earwig- I didn't watch it and just feeling from the vibe I will not watch it. I don't know what kind or relationship goro had with his dad, butit didn't seem like it was great and def felt that anger vibe coming out of some of his films. Although Poppy Hill was good. Pom Poko: I thought it was great, it def had it's own twang and kinda weird. Yet, the idea of animals coming back at hoomans sounds right. Miyazakis concern for the environment was in many films. Porco rosso: I couldn't get into this movie really. I liked the jazz music but thats it. Also the idea of a teenager liking a someone who was much older didnt vibe with me either. It was a one time viewing lol Totoro: I felt like it was moe than cute, I def felt the pain of may when she cried and went missing, and then dealing with their mom being sick. It had some depth in there, also worshipping the tree to help it grow. whisper of the heart: I think this would have been a great movie to watch as a teen as it can encourage one to find themselves and a creative outlet. Nausica and mononoke- I think mononoke came from nausicaa actually. They are very similar. I didn't like the gore in mononoke, and thought that was more for adults. I really loved how naussicas kindness towards the Orbs allowed her life to be saved by them. I think both films could be together. Howl- is amazing too! The dimensional travel? wonderfully done. Overall I think ghbili has some of the best made films of all time. :)

I was SHOCKED to hear some fellow doing reviews on KZread pronouce it "jibbli".Even if you don't know any Italian at all, you know how to pronounce "spaghetti", Karmann-Ghia, and ghetto. Don't you? The answer is, Miyazaki didn't know! He named the studio after the Italian airplane manufacturer knowing no Italian and so pronouncing it "Jibbli". And since it's his studio and that's the way he pronounces it, that's the right way.

It is your tier, so it is OK... but you don't know much about Studio Ghibli. 1°) 'Ocean Waves' is not a movie, it is a film made for video release. 2°) In 'Whisper of the Heart' the clock that you see in the shop is made by Porco Rosso 3°) 'Caste of the Sky' is a modification of Miyazaki script made by Hideaki Anno, he took it to make the series 'Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water' 4°) 'Grave of the Fireflies' and 'Totoro' were made in the same year... the first was the important one, but it was horrible to see, and almost finished the studio, but Totoro gave them a lifeline that made them survive to make new movies... that is why Totoro is the logo of the studio. 5°) 'Pompoko' is based on the Shinto Japanese culture. If you don't know any of that culture, you will not understand. And this is OK. Also, I think that you need to check the flowers of Studio Ghibli: Satoshi Kon Mamoru Hosoda Makoto Shinkai and Pixar
