    So what is the point of "When Marnie was There" as a story? A child believes themselves to be worthless, but over the summer is put with relatives away from the city where she can explore with new relationships. She meets a girl moving into a house which catches her interest due to it being familiar to her. She imagines a friend with stories of being locked up in her house or other buildings and finally realizes this imaginary friend is her grandmother and the stories told to her as a preschooler that the house refreshed for her. The point was she realized she was loved when her Grandmother was a part of her life, so the summer gives her strength to return to her life realizing she is special to someone. So what is the point of "Only Yesterday" as a story? A woman believes she is successful in life at her job, but upon taking a work stint away from the city she remembers her youth and what her desires were for herself from elementary school. Through this reassessment she comes to realize her life is passing her by, in terms of what matters, and gives up on her job to remain with the work she took away from the city. The point was she realized pursuing her dreams are more important than stability and responsibility that adults force upon themselves to fit into the society around them.

    I personally thought that Marnie (Annas grandmother) was trying to reconnect with her as a spirit. When Marnie lived in the house by the lake she was happy even though her nanny and maids abused her. She had a tough life and as a ghost she chosed to stay at her house by the lake. There she would repeate her happiest days in there for the rest of her eternity. But then Anna came. Marnie wanted to show Marnie how much she loved her, she wanted to show Anna that she wasn't alone. By the end of the movie when Anna had a fever and when she met up with Marnie again Marnie asked for forgiveness, for leavong Anna behind, although it wasn't her fault that she died. She was finally at peace when Anna forgave her.

    Jared Poth there are things I absolutely love about the movie, like billy crystal as calcifer, the humor, the color/cinematography, but it was so confusing, the plot meanders and there are too many superfluous characters. Turnip head didn’t have to be in the film (or at least the human he transformed into) as did the mother and the subplot of finding a new husband and ratting her out to witch what’s her name.

  • @cataryad661

    The underlying theme of the film is anti-war, and the Turnip Head thing is to show the pointlessness of war. The war was supposedly started because the prince went missing. I kinda feel like he missed the whole point of Only Yesterday. The whole idea is to evoke a sense of nostalgia in that typical ghibli fashion, and all those simple scenes that may seem drawn-out or pointless are precisely what make it so, so good and enjoyable. One of the things that makes ghibli movies so great is their attention to detail and the way they manage to make even the most trivial matter interesting to watch. Never in my life did I think I would feel so much by watching a scene of a little family eating pineapple for 5 minutes, but the animation, the way they spoke and tried to pretend to like it before admitting it sucked, how they thought of explanations like maybe it's because of this or that. How Taeko just forces herself to eat it even though she visibly dislikes it only because it was her who was the most excited. It all felt so, so real and relatable, I could literally see myself and my family right there, even though that exact scene has never happened to us. And this is just one scene that I talk about because it was mentioned in the video, but there are soooo many that I could go on about forever. So yeah, movies don't need to be so heavily plot-driven in order to be good, sometimes it's enough to create that feeling of something tangible and real. Edit: just because I see many replies mentioning this, I never said that "getting" the movie = automatically liking it. There are many movies I understand yet dislike as well. I just said that I felt the video didn't really "get" the point, at least in my opinion, and that it was a little subjective in presenting and rating it. Oh, and I'm also not simply defending the movie because it's my favourite-I love it, but it's not even close to that. Just thought I should clarify this, thank y'all for being civil, have a nice day :)

    Well said. Only Yesterday felt like a breath of fresh air to me.. very relaxing and slow-paced compared to your typical crazy action-packed movie that never takes a minute to let its audience pause, reflect, react, or feel anything. Even if it’s not plot driven, there’s many movies and shows that have scenes that make us want to watch and feel good, but idk, only yesterday just got me so bored. I loved the scenes when she was a child, but any scene as her as an adult felt somewhat pointless for some reason. I think it’s just hard for most of us to grasp the meaning, and that’s why it’s hard for us to like it even if others do. I wouldn’t call it a terrible movie though by all means, it’s just not for me and when people dislike it, I see exactly why.

    Anne Smith the movie isn’t for everyone, only yesterday Is my favorite ghibli movie by far, it describes incredibly well 70s Japanese family and the director transmite pretty well his values and feelings. I can understand why people doesn’t like this o movie and others ghibli works like grave of the fireflies, tales of the princess kaguya they lack of action and are slow paced.

    Getting the point doesn't make it not suck. Commit 100% to illustrating a theme and a mood if you gotta, but it's a high risk film-making strategy since if you DON'T successfully hack the emotions of the audience and make them think you're a genius through the power of nostalgia pineapples... all you're left with is unforgivably boring nothingness.

    I actually really like "when Marnie was there" it deals with self love struggles due to the fact that Anna learned at a kinda young age that her parents are paid for her (which especially to a young girl like Anna that seems to struggle with accepting her asthma as a part of her) is something that could really affect her mental health. The first time she actually feels unconditional love is when she meets Marnie, of course Anna would try to hold on to that at all costs. And to be honest, Anna not at all talking about the feelings she has about the money her parents get but instead directing her feelings outwards in a sometimes rude way is something every teenager does at one point. The character arc is well written and the overall portrayal of Anna is very realistic.

  • @AshuriAikawa

    @AshuriAikawa

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@rattatouilletherat the interesting thing about this is you can potentially read the "gay" vibes between Marnie and Anna as parental, such as how Marnie teaches and holds Anna while rowing. For someone unfamiliar it could look like childhood crush, but on rewatch it could look like parental guidance. Them two dancing is another example of how it could look more parental than love depending on how you choose to read it. These scenes are shot in such a way that both interpretations feel valid, or at least I think so. I will say, however, that Ocean Waves feels like an unapologetically gay movie. It's fantastic, especially considering it was likely accidental lol. I definitely feel like this was the more gay movie of the two, but that's just me. I understand why people wouldn't like Ocean Waves, since it's arguably a pretty boring movie, but the subtext is what makes the movie, at least for me. Analysing the gay themes is really interesting.

    Whisper Of The Heart is a movie I truly feel is too underrated. It is absolutely without question a slice of life movie, and it is rather slow. But I don't mind that, as the visuals are positively stunning of 90's Japan. The story is very relatable to me, as someone who didn't really get amazing grades, didn't like school, and wanted to do something. The idea of trying your hardest to do what you want to do in life, that it is not easy but hard work, and that you'll suffer on the road to success is a really important one for people with little direction like myself. If anything, I need to rewatch the movie to remember the importance of focus in life, to find direction and create meaning. It's a great story for those who have hobbies or ambitions in things that can get caught in ruts, or for those who know what they want to do but hear all the people saying not to pursue it. To take the leap of faith, but commit to it wholeheartedly in the rough patches. Love the movie. Also loved From Up On Poppy Hill. Howl's Moving Castle is a blast, but read the book after you watch the movie then come back. It both makes the book better for Ghibli's visuals in your mind but also the movie better as you'll understand where the movie wanted to go but didn't. The movie is still a fever dream, and I prefer the book in general. Now excuse me, I'm gonna get ready to Merry Go Round Of Life.

    While I understand while other people might dislike Only Yesterday and When Marnie Was There, I personally really enjoyed them. They were good movies for me because I related to the main characters... and I have a lot of patience so I don't mind slow-paced slice-of-life plots (in some cases.. lol).

    Whisper of the Heart...I literally have written two essays in school about how much I love that film and how well it balances its themes with its story. The pacing in my opinion is one of the best in any film I’ve ever seen. However the resonation I get from it stems from her trying to follow what she’s passionate about in life and doubting her own skills. Probably because I’m an artist and I watched it when I was first getting into art...but I think the pacing at least is objectively perfect, and the director (who died shortly after its release) actually did a better job I feel than if Hayao Miyazaki directed it. The slower pace really adds to it and every scene fits each other in tone.

    My 3 favourite is: 1.Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. This film for me is about connection, that people once had with nature, but lost it. It's very close to what I see nowadays. I feel so connected with Nausicaa's pacifism and empathy. 2. Spirited away. Very emotional and extremely beautiful movie. 3. My Neighbor Totoro. It's also about nature and how people communicate with it, often using religion, about dealing with hard times in our lives, especially when you're child.

  • @rattatouilletherat

    @rattatouilletherat

    Idk, but I felt like the hate the movie got was very misplaced. In the almost two hours that it lasts, it really only shows a sliver of what her life has been like. When the girls from school came to drop off her things, when they were talking to Auntie about her demeanor at school, I could kind of pick up on their ill will towards her, because of her antisocial behavior. Her attitude towards her parents, feeling like they abandoned her might stem from them being young and work oriented. The abandonment issues also seem to have stemmed from the death of her grandmother, and the subsequent placement of her in foster care (again.) Her grandma protected her for 2 years, gave her stability, and gave her value, and it was all swept up from under her, not long after her parents death. For gods sake, people at her Grandmother’s funeral were talking about her like she was a nuisance and a problem. She was like some sick puppy that got in the way of things. Her experience in foster care must’ve been very cold and impersonal, as she was a ward of the state, and not actually valued much by others. By then, she must’ve known what happened to her parents. Coupled with her surroundings, it made her feel worthless. While being put into her “Auntie’s” care might have been refreshing for a while, the stigma she’d have gotten from her peers for being a foster child would’ve weighed heavily on her, and made her feel out of place. For a lot of the people in the comment section, the fact that she feels so hurt by the fact that her auntie gets checks from the state in order to care for her seems very ill placed, but from a certain point of view, and with some context, it makes sense. For most of her life, the people around her viewed her as a problem and a responsibility, not as a person to love and care for. The times she did recieve that love were cut short by tragedy, which for an impressionable young child would make them feel undeserving. She feels like the one person that is supposed to care for her is only doing so for monetary gain, and benefit, not because she loves and cares about her. (Also, on a side note, she might’ve recieved ill treatment for being of mixed ancestry. From my knowledge, Marnie’s Dad was British, though the mom is kind of a mystery. Anna had features that most Japanese people really don’t have, like blue eyes. Japan is a very homogeneous country, with very little immigration, and very little mixing between other ethnicities. The outburst she had at the fat girl during the Moon festival kind of hints at this.) I’m sorry for this long rant. I really enjoyed the film, and I feel like I picked up on some stuff that others didn’t really notice. I probably made some mistake along the way though.

    Completely with you on ‘Princess Mononoke’ - I absolutely loved how that film treated both the side of the forest and the metalworkers in a such a nuanced and multifaceted way. No bad guys; just different folks with different people and things to protect. Just like real life. I must say, I was surprised to see ‘The Red Turtle’ so far down the list. That film shook me in ways I can’t really put into words. I’m not the most stoic, manly man in the world but even so it’s rare for a film to leave me crying for hours on end after watching it, and even rarer for a film to leave me lying awake at night thinking it over. I thought the stroke of genius here was in the simplicity and ambiguity of how the story was told, so you can paint yourself onto the story. It was a film that that I knew from the first time watching it would never, ever leave me; beautiful, and heart-wrenching, and well within my all-time top 10 favorite films.

    Okay, could not disagree harder about Only Yesterday. It is a bit, niche, but it's such a wonderful evocation of several recent eras in Japan's history. Also, the pinapple scene is hilarious! It's not just that she doesn't like it, it's that she went so far out of her way to get her dad to buy this expensive foreign fruit, and then she tries to soldier through, pretending to like it because she feels that's her duty. But if you look, the pinapple was super green--it was unripe. And so it was bitter as f@#k, and you can see that in her face. Sorry. Rant over.

    It's not my favorite, but it does have my single favorite action scene(s) from Miyazaki. The entire sequence in the first act that starts with the street brawl, spirals out of control, and turns into a madcap train chase. It's amazing. Too bad I just could never buy into the whole "We have to destroy Laputa to save it" thing. I'd say it's by far the most tonally uneven of Miyazaki's movies. It's like he was trying to just do a simple shonen story, but couldn't quite pull it off and so it wavers between his usual environmentalism and more standard pewpew anime action that seems a bit out-of-place in his overall filmography as an independent filmmaker.

    Honestly I’d have to say that “Grave of the Fireflies” is my favorite. I watched it with my two friends, and at the end I was bawling my eyes out. I get that it’s children dying for 2 hours, but I really loved the movie and how Setia loved and cared for his little sister. I honestly wouldn’t have cried if I hadn’t compared me and my little sister to them. I just thought “What would I do in this situation? How would I care for my sister? How would we survive?” And I believe that’s what got me the most when I watched the movie.

    Grave of the Fireflies made me cry. I wouldn't say it's my fave Ghibli film, and there is a definite shift on tone from Miyazaki's films, but it was a good film I'd watch again. Not as much as Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro or Princess Mononoke etc but every so often when I haven't watched it for a while I'll grab the popcorn and the tissues and go for it.

    Me explaining some reactions to Ghibli films badly: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - Lord of the Rings meets Star Wars TFA meets the Age of Strife from Warhammer 40k. Porco Rosso - You will end this movie with a "wait it just ended?" but then have a craving for anything made out of tomatoes and olive oil and can only listen to Italian music. Princess Mononoke - This is the Zelda game you will never have. Kiki's Delivery Service - You can finally make one of the world's cheapest cosplay second to the "I am Gundam" cosplay from 2007. Grave of the Fireflies - You finally accept that Ghibli is not like the kiddy friendly Disney. The Cat Returns - As a kid, you thought it was cute. As an adult, you may question yourself if you have just initated a fetish for furry transformation. Castle in the Sky - This is literally just Star Wars: A New Hope but...steampunk...I guess? My Neighbour Totoro - In the Japanese audio, you think Mei is adorable. In the English Dub, will you even consider having kids if they would scream alot and have the big brain power of a fruit fly like Disney Mei? Ponyo - Finding Nemo is overrated. Spirited Away - Japanese Acid When Marnie was there - You will never look at your Grandma the same way again. The Tale of Princess Kaguya - a.) You will either think that Kaguya's parents never deserved her and it was completely justified that mah boi Buddha took her or b.) (like me) you completely hate Buddha and his moon posse and will always explain the ending as "Kaguya kidnapped by mufuking Buddha" and you will continue your eternal hate for Buddha until Ghibli decides to do sequels with fanservice. Tales from Earthsea - Gandalf vs ASMR Willem Defoe while Frodo has an existential crisis and facial muscle disability and I guess there are also dragons. Secret World of Arriety - Little Tom Holland has a small people fetish.

    Porco Rosso is my favourite animarted movie of all time, because there is so much respect and passion and love in it. I live in tuscany, and its unbelivable how a japanese writer got italian people so perfectly, in fact Porco itself speacks and thinks exactly how an olf family friend would. Milano industrial zone looks exactly like Milano, the Adriatic sea is perfectly rendered at the point that vegetation looks photorealistic, even the towns streets lock more real than pictures essentially creating a perfect image of 1910's Italy. The fact that there is no actual antagonist but just an honorable challenge between two pilots makes me remember what it means to be ENTERTAINED, to see every character and think "i would befriend them immediatley". And least but not last the obvious and genuine love for hydrofighter displayed shows me that studio Ghibli was having fun while making it.
