Tico Time and Other Expectations of Living in Costa Rica. Can you adapt to these ways?

Let's talk about some uniquely Costa Rican customs, things that Ticos do and things they don’t. We'll discuss some customs and expectations we've noticed living in Costa Rica. How can we better adapt our ways to fit in with locals. And we talk about Tico Time - a somewhat affectionate reference to the Costa Rican habit of arriving late for appointments, dates and dinners, and even business meetings.

OMG great video guys. I was literally just talking about these topics to a lady I just met that just moved here from USA. She was complaining about these things 😅. I agree with everything you said and also from living here we learned all these things. I too was embarrassed by a Gringo in our local Farmers market that was very rude to our pipa Amigo. The Gringo was rude, refused to pay for his coconut water that he drank and I couldn't STAND HIM and I gave him a dirty look and told our Amigo that this isn't how WE Americans all act!! We had to bury all expectations and we have to except what is !! They shouldn't have to change their culture for us and they won't so we have to change our ways We chose to immerse ourselves into the Culture, people and History when moving here. That is why we moved here. Ticos don't like confrontation and don't like saying NO They will just not show up or communicate and we have to except that. We have many Tico friends and they have explained these things to us. We go with the flow here !! Some personalities will not make it here and shouldn't try. The one thing I can't stand is seeing the Gringo that is self centered and believes that everything should revolve and change for them !!! Keep on keeping it real and telling the good bad and ugly because alot of People just try to SELL Costa Rica as a PERFECT PARADISE and don't share the bad and Ugly. No place on this Planet is perfect. I have friends in USA that we tell not to even try moving here because we know they won't adjust here because we know their personality 😉. Pura Vida 😊😊

Hello again. Yesterday, D and I drove to Atenas to look at properties in December's traffic. We had a wonderful meal at Parrillada Androvetto and a great iced coffee confectionary at El Balcon del Cafe. Final thought: Everyone here needs to learn to give better directions.

Love El Balcón! Did you speak to them in English, Dutch, German, or Spanish? :) - and on directions, a country without uniform addresses with house numbers means you have challenges. WhatsApp, Google, and Apple Maps are all your best friends! (as we mentioned - it's not that they need to learn, but we as foreigners need to adapt. Thanks for the great comments. Pura Vida!

En Espanol porque mi esposa es de Costa Rica. Even dropping a pin on Google Maps doesn't mean we're going to find the open house that we've driven 2 hours (Massive traffic) to see. Route 3 is dangerous enough without having to figure out whether the house sits on it or further away (dirt road). Sorry for the rant!@@yourpuravida

30 years ago neither my US parents nor their friends had stainless steel appliances. The world has changed and so has Costa Rica. You can still find places in Costa Rica and elsewhere that aren’t focused on these types of things. Pura vida.

I've been going to Costa Rica for 35 years I think their opinion on Americans have changed because of the news and I just don't think there as friendly as they used to be it is all about money now and Americans are probably to blame for this
