Aaron's Trip to the Emergency Room in Costa Rica: Did he live to tell the story?

Aaron ended up in the emergency room at Hospital CIMA in Escazú, Costa Rica for some pain in his side (no, it wasn't from Patrick's bad jokes). In this video, Aaron discusses his emergency room visit; how long it took from arriving to diagnosis; what it cost for a visit, x-ray and ultrasound; and if the nurses and doctors spoke English.

Hola guys I'm glad you are alright Aaron. What a great topic. I definitely had my experience with Emergency room with Caja and Cima and Emergency surgery at Cima. Here goes: I have Caja because we are residents. End of May 2023 I became extremely sick and severe pain and my vitals became critical and my organs started shutting down. An Ambulance came to my house and took me to our Caja hospital. After waiting 11 hours for diagnosis which they told me I had a severe Kidney infection but I had no symptoms of kidney infection. They admitted me and started me on IV meds and antibiotics. They had NO BEDS LEFT so I sat in a wheelchair propped up against the wall in hallway for 3 full days straight. My stomach was getting worse and my vitals were worse but nothing else was given to me like a bed . They released me on 3rd day. Went home and my body and organs were shutting down and I thought I was going to die. My husband called Cima and they said to come. Within the time my husband had me checked in I already saw a surgeon had a Cat scan and an X-ray. The sureon told me I was in critical condition and couldn't believe Caja miss diagnosed me so badly. I was dying!! I ended up with Emergency surgery because I had scar tissue that strangled my small intestines in 3 places and nothing was getting through including blood flow. I was bloated like a basketball and vomiting bile. My small intestines were dead. I had the best surgeon that specialized in intestines. I spent 6 days in Cema and I had the best Nurses and doctors during my critical care and all through the time there. They spoke English also. After 6 days in Cema I was ambulance back to Caja hospital to do 3 days more of recovery because our bill for cash at Cima was getting high but cheaper than USA. This time in Caja I had my bed and did my post op and was taken care of . That part was good there. The Emergency room is broken. Once you have surgery or diagnosis correct then you get your care you need. It's been a long recovery for me and I was cut from bellybutton down 9 inches. There was no guarantee that my small intestines would come back to life and my surgeon kept telling me to pray and of course I did . I'm starting to be me again and I think everyone should get a supplement insurance even with Caja. I was completely healthy and this was something that was never expected to happen to me. Healthy people get sick too! I hope this can help someone else!!

Wow, so glad you made a recovery. Cima sounds fabulous. Did not know there was supplemental insurance for caja. Do you mind sharing more about your recovery? Can you share about how much charges were for Cima?

Happy happy birthday Aaron! My husband had to go to the doctor when we were here in June. He had 2 visits and a very small procedure. With no insurance at all, it was $65 for both visits. The doctor was great, even cracking jokes! It was such a great experience!

Guys, I can honestly say I was starting to wonder when the next video was coming! I was counting on one per week LOL. Next month on the 12th I’m finalizing my process for the digital nomad visa, finally. I did buy a house here so I might actually get investor residency as well, but from personal circumstances I needed to get the digital nomad one first. In any case, glad to hear you’re in good health and thanks for sharing the story. Pura vida!

Love you guys, this is a really good story. Thank you for sharing and all the inside information is nice to hear. I watched your other video on why Malaysia would be so high on the list?? I've been twice (crossing over from Singapore). It is a beautiful country with nice enough people and great food. But I get that it may be a little too conservative on some things. But if someone forced me to live in KL or JB for the rest of my life, I would be okay with it.

Interesting story (glad you’re ok). Visiting the hospital as a foreigner is a fear all reasonable expats have had and I’m glad to hear it was a positive experience for you.
