The vdei is pretty good indeed. It's a very old braid knot typical of the ancient navies. This model is the simplest. In french it is called a baderne and it's mostly used as a rough carpet. I want to make this mat with 8mm rope. Do I need more than 20 feet? When you make your mats, is there a formula that you use to calculate the length of rope needed in relation to the rope diameter? How do you also calculate the length of rope for the number of passes?

This was a hard one. Had to take it apart twice. I had it too loose so only three leads were possible with 21ft of cordage. It would be helpful to know at the beginning what the diameter of the finished product should be.
