Thump mat- rope hot pad

In this video we tie the thump mat.
The mat was made using 1/4 inch (6mm) hemp rope. For a tight 4 pass version you would need about 20 feet (6 meters) of rope, while a looser version can be made using at least 24 feet (7,2 meters) of rope.
How to do common whipping:

How to stitch your rope mats:

Mark, thanks for this video. I tied a 6 strand thump mat coaster with nylon twine, and it came out perfectly the first time. Excellent explanation.

I love working with jute but I also have a lot of yarn left over because I also love plastic canvas This video also gives me a great idea on braiding all my left over yarns and then making a shape like in this video to create a rope anything including placemats and coasters 😎

I like this creation very much. I have a skein of rope, but it is thinner and I think the effect would not be so full and solid. Will look for one like yours. Thank you for your useful video!!

The vdei is pretty good indeed. It's a very old braid knot typical of the ancient navies. This model is the simplest. In french it is called a baderne and it's mostly used as a rough carpet. You can use any diameter of rope, and use 6 to 12 passes, and even with different colors or textures, but tjhat becomes very lengtthy. a more carpet model kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKWpqsl6qN2-msY.html

I want to make this mat with 8mm rope. Do I need more than 20 feet? When you make your mats, is there a formula that you use to calculate the length of rope needed in relation to the rope diameter? How do you also calculate the length of rope for the number of passes?

This was a hard one. Had to take it apart twice. I had it too loose so only three leads were possible with 21ft of cordage. It would be helpful to know at the beginning what the diameter of the finished product should be.
