Thrifting Hidden Antiques & Vintage at Giant Flea Market!

We're flying through the huge Louisvile Flea Market, and we've got the bargain fare! This vast convention center tucks junk dealers, antique resellers and people unloading storage units between booths of more pedestrian fare, and we're here to pick thrift-store priced vintage goods we can take west to our next antique show.
The promoter told us to shop up front where more antique dealers are set up...so we immediately go to the back instead! This is where things can be giveaway priced...we find Eastern Airlines first class stemware for 25 cents each, pick a fun velvet painting, 1930s shaker sets, antique shaving mugs and vintage postcards (total spend $17, retail value $75), and score authentic 1950s Seminole dolls for $5/each! These prices make thrift stores look expensive.
Then we head up front, where the regular antique and vintage resellers are hidden among the soap, food and new import junk dealers! We seek them out for better bargains on better merchandise, and are rewarded with everything from a neon bar sign (at half of retail price) to a handsome pair of antique cast iron bookends. We get to see a lot of fun things along the way (vintage comics, a good pottery dealer and a generalist who sells us a cool 1950s battery operated car), and talk to a man with 40 years experience selling old model kits and the like.
Our cart is full by the end, we won't be able to check this in our baggage so it's a good thing we have the car to take it all home! Thrift store prices at a big flea market make this a venue we'll return to in the future.

    I hope people think so at my estate sale next weekend! I price it for resellers. I realize not all do, and some only do by appointment, and some only want to do online and get the most they can for the best stuff--but then they sell a lot of good stuff cheap or in lots. @Lisakeller it's frustrating when they take so few people, I haven't seen that level of limitation since the pandemic

    Good evening, George! I could tell, from the go, that would be a place I'd really enjoy browsing. I was surprised to see the George Wallace portrait there. I would've loaded up on those doilies. There was a glimpse of what looked like a mini Consolidate Glass _Cosmos_ lamp there. I have two of those - one with a shade and one without. There's one of those cymbal playing monkeys here, still in its original box. I spotted a pretty chocolate pot where those lamps were. There didn't look to be any cups or saucers with it, though. That framed purse and gloves set interested me. At $60.00, that would've been really tempting. There was a fleur de lis and a sword, in the $2.00 jewelry, that I liked. Love the swashbuckler bookends! I would've been all over those Scooby Doo figures 😂 How long were you there? I would've been there all day! Tons of interesting items to browse! Thanks for taking us along!

  • @TheAntiqueNomad

    You'd have had fun at this one! George Wallace did well with laborers in Kentucky in his election runs. I really like the Cosmos mini lamps, I finally got one recently myself! The chocolate pot would've gotten my notice if it had been a full set. I bet there was a story behind the flapper gloves and purse that would've been interesting to know! Loved the swashbucklers, if condition had been just a bit better...

    For anyone listening, "Juliana" was a small sort-lived collection made by Delizza and Elster. Some of it has been identified because it was found with the hang tags and noted. D&E was never signed unless it was made for another company ...and had the other company's name. It scrapes fingernails down the chalkboard every time I hear a piece of D&E called Juliana without documentation. There are other names like that too, but it's the one that cheeses off rhinestone jewelry collectors.

  • @TheAntiqueNomad

    @TheAntiqueNomad

    6 күн бұрын

    Yes, that is actually true! I fall into it as well because when I say D&E to a new collector, I have to say "they made Juliana" for them to get it. Juliana was only a line of theirs for a few years in the 1960s

    Hi there! ABC plates became popular in Victorian England as a teaching tool, then spread to the USA and the style you saw there were popular in the 1910s and 20s. Grace's stuff is not unique in that regard, it's more about the square yet round shape of the face that was so popular, it influenced a lot of other cartoonists (like Max Fleischer when he did Betty Boop in 1930)

I don't usually buy as-is but I knew if perfect, it was a $100 lamp where I sell, so I figured I'd try to save it

    What do you use to get crud off of stuff?

    Depends on the crud, when in doubt start with a lightly dampened cotton cloth and work your way up. A lot of people go right to the harshest chemical because "it said it was good for xyz", which is why (for example) many copper kettles and boilers have been overshined using Brasso

    george do you think that they will bring back the show at the St Pete coliseum

    Someone needs to bring that back! It was such a pretty show, it would take someone in St. Pete willing to get the local dealers involved and go recruit dealers at the other Florida shows to do it.
