Finding Antiques & Vintage at Thrift Store Bargain Prices!

An acre of antiques! An unexpected detour takes me to this place I've heard about for years, but have never seen. What treasures will a gigantic mall with hundreds of antique dealers offer?
This place is so big, and there's a ton to sift through! It's almost like having two antique malls in one place, where a huge bank of showcases feature specialists with railroad china, 1950s western memorabilia, Fenton baskets, vintage toys, toothpick holders, even cheese domes. We get to explore real depth in certain collecting categories, and we find bargains right away in a case full of railroad china at half off (yes, Hall China did make spittoons for rail riders!).
The rest of the mall is given over to huge spaces with a mix of everything. Sometimes it's great stuff, like a space full of discounted MCM furniture and wall art, or the spot with a railroad baggage cart piled high with oaken boxes and drawer sets! Sometimes it's random stuff, and we talk about the danger of mixing new stuff with old until the old all disappears. But more than anything, we spend a lot of time trying to find things in the many spaces giving discounts up to 50%, making it possible to buy everything from a Mexican Saltillo to an oversized Frankoma vase for price less than the Goodwill store!
In the end, we have a lot of fun, see a ton of stuff and understand how we will shop this store when we return to this Centerville, along Southeast Indiana's antique alley!

Thank you George, for your visit to and video from the Centerville Antique Mall! I’ve been there several times and I always find things that I love! I once bought a beautiful, restored antique Hoosier cupboard from there ( 30+ years ago) and it is still quite beautiful and holds a special place of honor in my kitchen! Please be safe in your travels, wherever you go and enjoy every day…🥰🎶☮️💟

As a Brit I love watching your vids George.Sometimes I hear you mention British firms like Shelley and Denby and I’m like “ ooh I know those ones well!” Sometime you venture into middle ground, Europe, and I get to hear names I’m a bit familiar with like Goebel & Lomonosov. But the majority of stuff you talk about is fascinating as we just don’t have the brands, advertising, or even way of life that creates some of the things you have over that side of the pond. .

Agree with your comment about antique dealers writing on ephemera. Disappointing and unfortunately quite common here in the central valley of California. A half penny poly bag with a sticker would solve a problem that doesn't need to happen and it's a bad look for the dealer.

I just learned from you in this video that the blue compote I received as a wedding present in 1968 is a Westmoreland lotus pattern. I've been wondering about that since I've started watching thrifting videos. The one you showed is red but I'm sure it's the same pattern as mine. Thanks.

Nice tour. Thanks. Eerily quite in that place though ,really got the feeling of a formerly booming place at the tail end of a more prosperous era. Makes one wonder if certain middle of the road names will ever be as popular again i.e. Roseville, Redwing, Mc Coy, Metlock, Bauer, Franciscanware,or even somewhat higher end less 'workaday', Lalique,Wedgewood,Fostoria, Stuben, Limoges, etc. etc. I believe you even said in this video, (I'm paraphrasing) 'this dealers got things priced as though it's 30 years ago' ,and in past videos , 'at that price that's gonna continue to sit on that shelf', when in fact 20 or even as recently as 15 years ago, the item in question would have easily brought what was being asked. The only glaring exceptions seem to be advertising pieces, which kind of used to fall into, in my mind ,the broader category of rustics or farm antiques almost, in that they were not domestic items (bowls, dishes, glass wares, linens, furnishings) and certainly not 'fine antiques', or antique art, or fine art and sculpture pieces. The other exception being kitchy (dare I say, tacky?) items, and toys (even a lot of the low end cheap toys of their particular era of manufacture!) I can feel myself getting ready to 'soapbox' about recognition of worth, quality of design, and the sensibilities and tastes of the new era consumers, but anyway I will stop instead, and say, "thanks for having us along".

Bonsoir, George! Ohhh...those castor sets would've had me going nuts! Even if I had to install shelves for them... OMG! there was a Dr Pepper thermometer. I wasn't expecting to see that. It would've had to come with me, for sure. I liked that old churn. I have my great-grandmother's five-gallon churn and my grandmother's three-gallon churn, both with the original dashers. I've always wanted one of those smaller hand-cranked ones. The prices seem to be going up a bit on those. I would've gone nuts with the hair receivers, too. I really liked the "Addams Evil" book. I've always liked the cheese keepers. Mom had a super-nice flow blue one, and my brother has it now. Like you, I don't like when "antique" malls allow new stuff in them. The table just above the chaise lounge was phenomenal. I really liked the look of it. The prices there seemed really good. That space that had the 50% off sign, then marked the items "Firm"...what's the point of the 50% off sign? Thanks for taking us along shopping with you!!!

  • @TheAntiqueNomad

I thought you'd enjoy seeing a little Dr. Pepper there! I like castor sets but am spoiled and only would want a colored one. It was fun to see so many varieties in one place! It seems so nice that a lot of family items have come down to you. The churns are neat and harder to find now. Flow blue cheese keeper...I think the most beautifully deep flow blue piece I ever saw was one of those. I didn't know about 'Addams Evil' until adulthood, but I remember my sister showing me one of his circa 1960 books in my parents' bookcase and getting me hooked, I hadn't seen the show at that point so it was a wonderful new discovery. Hate seeing new stuff in "antique" malls. Agree fully about "50% off, excluding almost everything" signs. But it was a fun mall, and I'm glad you enjoyed coming along!

There were some interesting things in there but quite a bit of the newer stuff too. Seen some pricing that is way beyond the scope too. The thing with sales that get me is they overprice stuff and then put a fifty percent off on it all. I have seen booths that are always on sale so it makes me wonder. Depending on what I see there will depend on whether I walk away or look a bit. Have a great day and safe travels
