Thrift Store Electroscore - Sony STR-DB840 Receiver
I just can't help myself when it comes to thrift stores and electronics. Anytime I'm visiting one and find something cool, more often than not it comes home with me. Such was the case this day when I found a Sony STR-DB840 receiver for $20 at the Medicine Hat Value Village location.
Let's check it out, and maybe if it doesn't work we'll make a project out of it.

That's unfortunate because the remote for this particular model is pretty advanced.
I have this reciever but sometimes all 6 speakers work and other times I get 3 ,4, or 5 .it seems to be different everything I turn it on.any idea what could be causing this ?

Probably those uPC inline voltage amplifiers on the mainboard. There are three of them. They get hot enough to de-solder themselves over time. Should be able to access the solder points through the access panel in the bottom.

I did three videos on this receiver. Just take the top cover off and look around the mainboard with a flashlight. The board will be discolored around those chips where the heat has baked them. Sometimes they will cook the capacitors near them as well. Also pays to look around at the rest of the board for further problem areas - there are other voltage regulators that can desolder themselves too. 12voltvids has done a few of these Sonys on his channel as well, probably covers it better than I can.

@Oklawolf thanks again ,it's been a great amp for my home cinema and I've had it since new. I hope it can be repaired as wouldn't like to get rid of it if I didn't have to .
