The lamps I used are 6V 3mm wired in series. The power source for the lamps is 12V AC, which is why the LEDs didn't work.

Re: TC-K75. I fixed mine which was dead but needed several other jobs to be done on it. I also had to buy two Sony CX-174-2 (Dolby and integrated OP Amp) ICs which made the overall cost at about £110. Oh, and yes also needed to source a LED Meter display IC, which luckily I had 'in stock'.

If I may mention the motor controller board - I rescued a long dead TC-K75, and seemingly one of the developed faults was that the motor controller board shorted to earth. So I later isolated this so that the solder side could never touch the chasis.

Those felt disks can be purchased in kit form from the usual suspects, look for something like "felt washer for VCR repair" or something close. A wire brush can also restore them sometimes. CA was the right choice for the overmolded plastic parts that Sony is so fond of, JB weld is formulated for metal repairs and doesn't wet out plastic very well at all. Another good choice is Acrylic cement assuming, of course, it's Acrylic. Did you ever get your tape back, and why is shipping from US to Canada so outrageously expensive all of a sudden?

  • @Oklawolf

Hi! Thanks for the useful video. Sorry for my English, I'm from Ukraine. I have TC-K81 and it seems to have the same problem. Low winding force, when playing a cassette, closer to the end the autostop is triggered, often pulling the tape out of the cassette. The cassette deck was serviced by a technician, but he was still unable to adjust the required force. I didn't quite understand about the spring and the locking washer, it seems I need to disassemble the tape-transport mechanism myself and watch your video again.... 😑 It scares me a little... In general, the cassette deck has excellent sound, I would really like to adjust it.

It is the same transport - this is usually caused by the rubber take-up idler to the right of the left side reel table. A new idler tire should fix it. They are available from Siliconemind on eBay. My video from today on the TC-K55 may help as well.

I would disagree that "this head design is not necessary". This is a brilliant Nakamichi invention that will allow you to playback the tapes with felt pad lost and bended or completely missed spring.

Get a Denon or JVC. They sound just as good and chances are the deck will still be running. When it finally does need service, they're super easy to work on. Nakamichi decks were overhyped, overpriced and over engineered and tapes produced on them don't sound any better on other player types, if anything, they sound worse.

49:50 the service manual for my K65 said the lamps were 8V 50mA so I ordered 9V 4mm lamps off Aliexpress. It seems the K65 has manual controls for bias and eq. While I think the dials on your K61 look better, the manual controls sure come in handy. I wish it had an adjustable output level though..

  • @Oklawolf

Sony likes to play games with lamps in these. Only the one lamp in a K61 is an 8V, the other is different. Both in series. Two 6V lamps worked well enough.
