Sony STR-DB840 Part 3 - Attempting Repairs

In the final video of this series, I attempt to replace the parts earmarked for replacement in part 2, plus I'll do a partial recap of the power supply section of the digital board. Let's see if it pays off.

Update - the source of the protection fault has been located. One of the NEC voltage amplifier ICs was faulty and dumping full B+ into the right channel output transistors. After removing it and swapping over the surround IC, the receiver is back to its original problem. We fixed nothing. Very likely something on the digital board is fried on this guy.

Iam sorry for your efforts, but it was interesting. Probably it is emitting the information that debugging these devices is not quite easy. Anyway many thanks!!

What problem is that? No sound? I was never able to find out what's causing that on this unit. Going into protection was caused by a faulty IC501. After removing it, it no longer goes into protection but is back to the original problem. To diagnose, you will find five large white ceramic double resistors near the power amp output transistors. They'll be big white blocks with three metal pins coming out of them. Measure between the center pin and ground - you shouldn't find DC voltage of any significance, maybe around 4-5V. I got 47VDC on one of them, which traced back to one of the outputs on IC501. Resolder any bad joints first to rule that out.
