Three Working Loads in the Incredible 9 3x62

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I now understand why this round became so popular in Africa. Superb balance between recoil, power and penetration. Old Otto knew what he was doing! Three good working loads two with the remarkable Oryx bullets from Norma. Love those Swedes!

    I have a Czech friend and former exchange student from 20 years ago who is an avid hunter. He uses a Sauer in 9.3x62 with 286 gr Oryx for bears in Kamchatka. He thinks it is a great cartridge. For hogs and deer at home he uses a .308 Win barrel for the same rifle.

    Looks like a great round, many years back, my brother in law was into total Euro cartridges used in Africa and he had a sako action barreled to 9.3x64 Brennike, cartridges were $120 a box back then so I reloaded for him and if memory serves I used the Norma bullets, good Lord that had power! Every bit and more a 375HH .

    9.3x64 Brenneke is probably with good ammo BETTER than the .375 H&H Magnum, I've had a long standing desire to use this cartridge on large game, it has an outstanding reputation, the Russian load in 9.3x64 is no better than the 9.3x62 but with RWS/DWM your 9.3x64 Brenneke is a real killer.

    My uncatalogued (they made only 11) Savage 111 in 9.3x62 w/20" barrel and DBM was a special find - the 250gr Accubonds work well in it and I shoot a lot of 290 gr cast bullets too. I have the Barnes 250gr TSX to play around with too. It's pretty much my "go to" hunting rifle anymore.

    Congrats on your retirement...5 days and counting eh? I enjoyed your 9.3 video. My Sako Black Bear in the same caliber is one of my favourites. Don’t overlook Privi Brass and 285gr. bullets for a budget load. A Frames are my preferred bullet in the 300gr. class and still expand reasonably well even down to 1700fps. Cheers from Richmond, BC Canada

    I recently acquired a 9.3x62. Its a Husqvarna model 640 made in 1944 according to the serial number. A deluxe model with a jeweled bolt. It has a Limbsaver recoil pad. The action is a cock-on-close M96. The gentleman I got it from grew up hunting in Africa but lives in the U.S now and arranges African safaris. He said he's personally killed two Cape Buffalo with the rifle in recent years and it's just as effective as the 375 H&H. Actually the 35 Whelen can shoot the same weight bullets faster than the 9.3x62 because its SAAMI MAP is 62000 psi vs the 57500 for the 9.3x62. Woodleigh makes 275 and 310 grain bullets for the 35 Whelen and provides some pretty hot loading data for it, but it's still not legal in any African country for dangerous game. On paper the 9.3 is not as good as the 375 H&H but the 9.3x62 has been in use for so long that it is grandfathered in for dangerous game. The only thing that I might ever get to use my 9.3 for is Whitetails or Mule deer. For that I'll just just use the Privi Partisan 285 grain jacketed which is similar to the old Remington CORE-LOKT bullet. I do about the same with my 35 Whelen. Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

    I have been fortunate to use a 9.3x62 for years and it is one fine killer on any game you will likely encounter, it is a personal favorite, just can't say enough about it, good killing power, modest recoil (i need to try the 320-grain on something like Asian Buffalo, bet it would do a great job, during the rut Bison are a totally different animal and the 9.3x62 would do a fine job with them as well) Hope you get a chance to use that rifle and 320-grain on a Bison next season. Outstanding information on my personal favorite medium bore. Really enjoy your channel we have similar interest in rifles and cartridges for big game. Thanks for your efforts they are appreciated. My experience with the 270 grain Speer has not been positive as it would not hold together on game if pushed very fast. Great in the 9.3x57 or possibly in reduced velocity (not max class) in the 9.3x62, but for me it blew the cores out. Maybe on deer it would do but I was not impressed, course these were loaded hotter but i can say in my experience as well, they were accurate, inexpensive and cheap to shoot.

I also have a good load to 2400fps at 1/2 moa at 100 yds. I used the Nosler 250gr Accubond this year to take a cow elk at 200yds. Naturalis is a bit better, but I don't use them anymore. Because they don't always open up like they should. The bullet that works best for me and my buddy is Barnes TTSX. He's using 308win and 3006. I noticed that you were shooting with the off hand controlling the rear sand bag, a style identical to what I was using with a .338 Win Mag, and I also couldn’t do much better than 1 1/2 inch groups…at best. Until….a couple of friends who had no idea how to “properly” use sand bags both shot sub minute 3 shot groups from the bags!!! What the ???? They held the forearm!!!!! Since then I’ve noticed that hard recoiling sporter barrels often shoot better from the bags with the forearm held firmly.

    I always enjoy your posts. You have and use many of the calibers I love: .358 Win., .348 Win., .405 Win and even a .375 Win which never gained a lot of attention. I don't know if you have a .450 Marlin and .45-70 to compare. That would be a lot of fun. Maybe your bud in Alabama could do one, too. Take care.

  • @north61

    @north61

    Those two are basically 2 versions of the same thing. The Marlin case has slightly less capacity but less bolt thrust and a higher margin of safety run at higher pressures in a Marlin as Marlin used a different form of threading in the barrel which left a bit more "meat" to deal with pressure. The end result is basically a tie, A good 400 grain bullet at 1900fps is no joke! I sometimes think about getting a 450 Marlin in a BLR where it could be loaded to an honest 50,000 PSI and about equal a 450 Alaskan. The extra 200fps would be worth a comparison test. Honestly though my Marlin is so handy and accurate and effective as is, I usually just resist the temptation.

  • @Mark-uq9km

    @Mark-uq9km

    @@north61 I forgot that Browning chambers the BLR in .450. The locking lugs on the bolt of the BLR are certainly stronger than the Marlin bolt. I study reloading data to an annoying degree and compared the loading differences between the .450 and .45-70 for Marlin lever guns. The .45-70 had more options for terminal ballistic performance over the .450. However, I don't think that tells the whole story especially when it comes to keeping yourself and bystanders safe when your firing different loads. Thanks. I'd love to see you get a buff.
