In this video, we are joined by a very special guest again: Dr. Kevin Robertson. Kevin is going to share his thoughts on some of the best bullets for hunting Africa for plains game and cape buffalo.
Plains game run the gamut in size from the tiny duiker (which may only weigh 30 pounds or so), to impala and springbok (which are similar in size to deer and pronghorn), to kudu (which are approximately the size of an elk),to eland (which can tip the scales at over 2,000 pounds in some cases). Obviously, hunting plains game presents a unique set of challenges when it comes to selecting the best all-around hunting bullet.
Cape buffalo are in a completely different league from just about every species of game out there: They’re significantly bigger, tougher, and much more dangerous than deer, elk, or even African plains game (aside from really big bull eland, which are not as dangerous, but can be as big or bigger than buffalo). So, cape buffalo require a whole lot more out of a bullet than just about anything else out there.
In this video, Kevin Robertson and I discuss the ins and outs of bullet selection for hunting in Africa so you can decide what best fits your needs as a hunter.

    Great interview. You are correct when things go well with Buffalo hunting it's all good But when things get ugly you will thank yourself that you took the time to practice practice practice. Both my Buffalo were taken with 375 h;h using 300 grain tsx bullets. Good expansion as advertised with 99% weight retention. One Buffalo at 18 yards between the eyes ,and my first Buffalo a hair raising charge as he died at my feet literally . Kevin's advice to know your rifle and be quick but accurate can definitely save your life.

    Got back from my 2nd African safari 2 weeks ago and brought a .270 with custom made Barnes TTSX. Dropped a Zebra, impala, blesbok, kudu, blue wildebeest and springbok right on the spot. My recommendation is study, study, and practice, practice, practice on the range. If you do, you will have a great hunt and won’t waste time tracking. I decided to up the ante and go for Buffalo in 2026. I bought a 458 Win Mag and cannot wait to go back.

You pretty much describe the combination I was thinking about using on my first Cape buffalo hunt, a 416 Remington Magnum with 400 grain Swift A-frame for the first shot followed up by 400 grain Woodliegh hydros! @@Thebiggamehuntingblog cool article but info is a bit dated. Especially with 45-70 loads. A Ruger No. 1 can be loaded much hotter than a 1895. They can easily handle upwards of 50k psi and work a 350gr pill up to 2,300 fps which equates to roughly 4,100 ft/lb of energy which is above the minimum across the board.

  • @Thebiggamehuntingblog

    @Thebiggamehuntingblog

    Жыл бұрын

    No, that article still pretty well sums everything up and not much has changed since I wrote it, even with regards to the Ruger No 1. Even with a 2,300fps velocity with a 350gr bullet (which is a little in excess of what every single one of my reloading manuals lists for a max load), that still isn't an ideal load for dangerous game with the 45-70. This is because a 350gr .458 caliber bullet has a pitiful .238 SD, which is well below the generally accepted minimum of .300 for dangerous game. That's not a legal minimum, but it's a recommendation for a reason. Can you kill a buffalo with it? Yes, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. You mentioned that you found it "funny" that the 308, 30-06, and 300 Win Mag (which are all excellent plains game cartridge) are included in the article while the 45-70 was absent. You don't have to like it or agree with me, but that's why those cartridges are included and the 45-70 isn't.

    Kevin Robertson is talking from experience, no baloney! I have limited experience with dangerous game after having taken only 5 Buffalo in my life which is still more than most. I have been loading my own ammo for over 50yrs and have studied ballistics and bullets extensively. I have used 400gr Swift A frame in a marlin 45/70 lever action for Bull bison at 125yds. 2 shots broud side, perfect mushroom under hide on opposite side! 458 win mag 500gr original Hornady soft points, Argentina Water Buffalo, first shot behind shoulder as he was quartering towards me at 50yds, bullet found in opposite back hip, perfect mushroom, 2 more shots through the lungs as he stumbled past me! Bison bull at 20yds with 45/90 Winchester 1886 lever action shooting 430gr hardcast bullets at over 2100 fps. Hit him twice in the chest. Bull didn't seem very impressed and trotted off. Finished him at about 75yds with a 3rd bullet in the shoulder. I will not ever use hard cast again for hunting. Argentina waterbuffalo again. This time with Marlin 45/70 loaded with 405gr Woodleigh flat points at 2000fps. Frontal chest shot at 50yds. Bull turned and ran down hill and was "hiding " behind some brush waiting for me. I levered 3 quick shots through the brush from about 100yds to finish him. Those Woodleigh bullets hit hard and make Buffalo very sick! Last month, Oct 2022, I shot a 44" Cape Buffalo in Africa with my 458 Lott using 450gr Barnes tsx at 2350fps. I decided on this load because it shot pretty flat out to 300yds for plains game an yet still carries a sectional density of over .300 as recommended for dangerous game. My rifle is a Dakota 76. The load hammered my Buffalo from 35yds broad side with a couple of quick finishers! Next day it performed beautifully on a Red Hartebeast at 175yds. I use Barnes tsx,ttsx bullets for most of my hunting including out west for antelope and muledeer with great results. I'm considering using my 45/90 with the 405gr Woodleigh for my first shot and 400gr Barnes buster solids both at 2150fps for my next Cape Buffalo! The 1886 holds 8 rounds!

    So far it sounds like the Nosler parton with it's soft unbonded front half would be the way to go. Thick jacket bonded bullets may be too tough to expand in soft tissue. The perfect situation would be for a bullet to expend 99% of it's energy in the game animal with 1% energy for the exit wound. Air and blood out of entrance and exit wound.

    Really curious how something like a 300 rum or 300 prc 245 grain berger would do on something like a Lion or Eland. I'd imagine it'd do well but 375 with a 300 grain bullet would still be better. Bergaras new 375 h&h in their canyon rifle might be worth a look. Doing my 1st African Safari this year, using my 300 win mag with the 180 grain silvertips as the biggest I'm shooting is wildebeest and Kudu. A future safari will probably be a buffalo and eland

    Hi, Just finished listening to this presentation and I have one basic question. On elk, primarily, am I looking to plow through shoulders and break him down with something like a ttsx and come out the other side for additional blood or am I better off shooting behind the shoulder with an eldx and allowing the expansion and energy transfer to do the work? Plus, after reviewing results (by the hundreds), it simply appears to be a matter of velocity at impact that determines terminal performance -- which is completely out of my control since it is 100% dependant on the range at which the game is shot. So, it all appears to be something of a crap shoot, that is unless you can say "I'm going out to shoot my elk at 75yds today (or 475yds)

  • @Thebiggamehuntingblog

    @Thebiggamehuntingblog

    Жыл бұрын

    I personally (and I make no claims this is the only or the "best" way of doing things) prefer to plow through both shoulders and (hopefully) get an exit wound. I prefer a deep penetrating projectile like that in order to maximize the shot angles I can reasonably take a big and tough game animal like an elk at. Impact velocity is indeed directly related to terminal performance, but all bullets have a velocity range they'll work at. Too high of a velocity and you run the risk of having the bullet come apart on impact and fail to penetrate deep enough to reach the vitals. Too low of a velocity and you run the risk of the bullet not expanding (or expanding very little) and just "penciling" through the animal without inflicting as much damage. You're most likely to run into problems at the margins: a long range shot with a tough bullet or a short range shot with a soft bullet. The exact performance will vary depending on the specific bullet and the velocity we're talking about, but things normally go fine as long as you're dealing with impact velocities within the acceptable range for that bullet. Make sense?

    @@Thebiggamehuntingblog agreed. I have a 300RUM that I got while working in a local gun shop because it had obnoxious recoil (Rem 700 BDL SS) . They guy traded on a 6.5 creedmore and said he had bought the rifle in 1999 when the cartridge first came out. He said he shot 4 rounds, put it in his closet and never touched it again. When he left I naturally bought the rifle and long story short, it shoots the proverbial ragged hole groups! So I put it in my closet with the box of 180 gr. Partitions that I shot the test group with and won't be touched again until it's sighted in and on the hunt for elk in Montana ! So, the caliber kinda chose me and it's pretty extreme (I'm not one that has to have the biggest, fastest cartridge - actually I was only trying to find a 30-06 as a step up from my 243) but I'm also not one that will fight a gun to shoot well. Anyway, I agree - I believe I will plow through both shoulders since Im kind of a horn hunter anyway, I mean that's the only down side is ruining meat, isn't it?

  • @Thebiggamehuntingblog

    @Thebiggamehuntingblog

    Жыл бұрын

    Sort of. Recoil is a downside, but sounds like it doesn't bother you as much as the other guy. More expensive ammo is another downside. And yes, meat loss will potentially be an issue. However, that's a result of where you hit the animal (less meat to lose on the ribs vs the shoulders for instance) and how far away it is. With 180gr Partitions, you'll probably have an impact velocity around 2,900-3,000fps at 100 yards, but only around 2,600fps at 300 yards. So, all other things equal, meat loss will be a much bigger problem at shorter range.

From the bullet exploding to deviation so bad from point of inpact that I have lost a Buffalo in Zim that we traced for 3 days. to soft skein animals like gemsbuck that the 300g .357H&H did not penetrate at all and shot the bull 2 days later with bans bullet that performed excellently in the .375 H&H. and to close this was with the new bullets from Hornady, this all happened in the 2022 hunting season.I will never hunt or recommend DGX ammo to any hunter.

That said, you're right: the cavalier attitude some people have about their preparation is absolutely shocking. Like you say, an elk or a kudu probably won't kill you if you screw it up, but that's a real possibility with a buffalo.
