I sent for his brochure in 84 or 85 the price then was 1300.00$ I could not afford it at the time. I ended up buying a Remington Model Seven in 7MM-08. It worked out but I always regretted not buying his rifle. 🥲
They should re-release the 6.5 mag in a different rifle, but change the name to something short mag. The same with the 350
On the reproduction model 71’s, browning and Winchester both made that model. As far as quality and accuracy, would you prefer the original or which modern brand reproduction for hunting?
I feel privileged to own a custom NULA in 7mm-08 with Melvin's 25th anniversary signed action. It's a sub moa gun as you'd expect. It was a pleasure working with him. RIP
I was aware of the Forbes rifles and their innovations, but regrettably just didnt get into them.😢. I did pick up an Forbes left hand 375h&h but just havent put it to work. I just wish my Forbes was an 30-06 as it would be lighter and far more useful and economical.
Thanks for do this ,I seen a add in a hunting magazine when I was in high school in texas, I fell in love with the rifles ,I own a model 24 and I love it, plus my father's family are from west Virginia so it makes it little special,!
Yes…great tribute. I had no idea he had passed. I had the pleasure of having several phone conversations with him and own two of his Model 20s. True art and genius in the gun world and a true gentleman as well. RIP
What an awesome video I love to learn about arms makers I’ll keep my eyes open for Forbes made rifles with tell tale signs of his craftsmanship
I know Forbes used Douglas barrels, also from West Virginia. If I'm not mistaken Wilson Combat bought Forbes not long ago.
What a terrific Homily-Like tribute delivered with Jimmy Stewart-Esque honesty. I became aware of Melvin Forbes through the writings of John Barsness (sp) Rifle/Handloader. Can’t complement you enough on your videos, really enjoy them. Perhaps it is the North American, do it yourself honesty that I admire in all your adventures. While sharing a genuine love of family and God’s majestic wilderness through fine stewardship. This can’t be faked folks. Bravo!
Like you, I've owned dozens of the 600's and 660's. The short magazine makes it challenging to load for. I did rechamber one to 6.5X57 Lapua. Being shorter case than the 308 case. It allows for bullets to be seated out farther. I have another in 358 and the difference between .308 and .358 allows for more flexibility in seating depth. Thank You
It would make a nice Creedmoore too!
thank you both
Great Tribute, it really highlights a great innovator and his story in the hunting industry. Hopefully the new Nula brand rendition of the Ultralight Arms does justice to his legacy.
I live in pa not to for from wv border lot of hill country here. God bless 🙌 the man and his work 🙏
Melvin Was A Genius 😀
Melvin Forbes - Pure Genius and Amazing Innovator! Country Roads, Take Me Home! ⛰️ … West (By God) Virginia! ❤️
Let's go.....Mountaineers!
What size animals do you hunt with 6.5 remmington?
I have taken a whack of caribou with mine... it would be a good sheep choice too.
Good afternoon Greg! 🙏🙏
Welcome back!!! I have kept you waiting!
What? I think that is an awesome looking rifle looks sick/AWESOME.
My friends are all old!!!!!
@north61 oh that says it all old guys do tend to get entrenched, BUT I'm old too 60s and love the way your rifle looks with that mdt stock.
Since my 450 is in the heavier 1895MR model I scoped it with an older Zeiss Diavari, made in west Germany, 3-9 scope that works great. It’s it’s just whitetails I’ll grab my marlin or win in 356. I prefer the 356 rather than my 375.
450 marlin using 405gr JFN at 1950fps. I like my marlin 375 too.
Any luck spring bear hunting?
Found a great spot where the bears show'd up every day but my new hunting partner (my wife) didn't want me shooting them once she saw them. Hard to put that in a video!
How is it mounted? Is there a special bracket or something?
kzread.info/dash/bejne/iKiJlZSBeL2TedY.html
How bads the recoil ?
I use my 35 Whelen
I’m guessing my 264mag or my 7STW would work too.
There, you done said it! I was late in life discovering the truth of what Townsend Whelen helped Winchester perfect in the 1930's? For me the Mod64 in 30-30 fir the Appalachian Mountains, and you, The Yukon with a Mod71 in 348. I've been around and around, 30-06-270Win, scoped when my eyes are worn put, and at 65 it's near! But not yet! The Mods 71 & 64 get it done just right, hunting, hunting ranges, and I also use a canoe often, etc! So 8m staying with my obvious best choice again, my Mod 64 with receiver sight. My deer last Nov, demanded a quick 50yds shot, and my rifle and sight placed a perfect very quick shot before the deer bolted, etc! Just like your excellent Moose kill from the canoe! Get that Mod 71 ready again!
Those Win levers are a special creation!
Yes on the Hawk Bullets, great people and bullet, and I'd say for 348 also!
Yes, the MMM! Mod71 348 (Moose Meat Maker), loaded in the freighter this fall, geturdone!
will do
Load that 71 with the Barnes Original 220gr, get back on Moose!
Only negative I can say about my Win 94 in 375 is it’s top eject so no top center scope mounting. With my older eyes a scope is required. If I’m using my Win 94 BB XTR, I’m grabbing the 356win (angle eject) using 220gr Speers and scoped with a Leupold vari-x III 1.75-6x.
Barrel rate of twist maybe? Savage 99 and Win 88 both had a 1:12” I think same as the 356 in a Win 94. But a 35 Whelen had a 1:16” twist in the Rem 700 along with the Rem 660 in 350 mag. Best I remember most manufacturers build 35 caliber barrels from 1:10 - 1:16. Barrel twist would be a contributor to bullet weight stability and speed I’m thinking.
What’s the heaviest bullet would you recommend for the 356win in the marlin 336ER or Win 94. Guess I’m limited to flat nose bullets. Both my 356’s like and perform well with the factory win 250gr.
I would chuck the 250 grain Speer bullets in my mini lathe and Flat Nose them.... The 220 Speers are great but no longer available.
Here in B.C., you must shoot a 175 gr. or heavier bullet, and it must retain 2000 ft.lbs. at 100 meters if you want to hunt bison.
I think the 25-06 is the ideal pronghorn cartridge and it's my #2 behind the 270/280 for muleys. I too use 120 Speers in my 25-06 and they perform very well.
What’s your choice for moose? 348 or 405? I’m certain both are very capable just wondering what you’d choose.
the 348 is just a bit more nimble and has lots of power for moose. Ck out this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/n6Nt3LqoidvXZ6Q.html
Great review! You should try a muzzle break. I've been shooting a 300 RUM for 20 years and said I don't need a break...they're for wussys....but let me tell ya-it's a game changer...not only in the ability to shoot all day but accuracy is improved exponentially. Keep up the great work!
What is the advantage of a 458 over a 338 Lapua?
I have had both..the 338 has high b.c. bullets and velocity that turn it into a premier long range round with amazing long range reach and power. The 458 has remarkable short range punch.... those wide bullets hit super hard on both ends.
North61, I don't know if heard that Malcolm Forbes passed away. He was a West Virginia legend and a pioneer. RIP, Mr. Forbes.
Thanks Mate..yes I heard... have been working on a video but it's not good enough to post. Special man there!
A 20 " barreled 378 Weatherby. The muzzle blast will kill it. Its shocking!
Sounds like a deterent!
Very good find!! I’ve got a 111B and 111 hiker still unburned in their boxes that hopefully never have to use…..and a 111B that I regularly use. I found them through the same books, got some and now I don’t use anything else on canoe expeditions. That extra burner makes it really unique on yours…..now to find an ‘arctic’ model with the curved tube!! Haven’t seen one in a while??
They make great tents but they are too expensive. Kuiu has a lifetime warranty on their tents and give great customer service too. Their tents are half the price of Hilleberg and are very stout. Have fun with the new to you tent !
I have been lucky to find some second hand bargains.
Them subscribers need to shine up their eyes. That gun is sexy.
I'm sorry, but that is not a can am in my book. I can't believe they got rid of the 650 and made a single cylinder.
Boa noite pessoal, tenho um 111 desses que esta vazando a pressão pelo tanque , tem algum video que ensine a resolver o vazamento ?

Try a 110 TTSX in 270 Win. I use Superformance and W760. I'm reading a looking more into the 25-06. My local FFL has a NIB Sako 85 wood furniture. He's asking $1800.
If you have a good 270 it will so what a 25-06 does with a bit more bullet mass. I lucked into a good light weight 25-06 if it had been a 270 it would have been a bit more versatile..but I do like the 25-06.
Looks like all things considered, the .356 Winchester was the winner of the range/energy wars within the Model 94 family.
Yup..pretty good carbine for the Yukon/Alaska!
Too bad Speer stopped making the 220gr FN in .358 but still produces the 180gr. I still use my 356 in both my marlin 336ER and 94 XTR. I have plenty of factory win 250gr I bought cheap back in the early 1990’s.
@@ronkay1573 Pretty hard to get correctly stamped brass for the .356 now, and expensive if you do.
good day, im just wondering where did you get the woodleigh bullets from?
Vendors change but the Woodleigh site has a list of vendors you can contact.
@@north61 I've recently picked up a 358 Norma and should be receiving some 270 northfork should be able to get a load ready for for bison season. Got some 250 spear hopping to get ready for moose
@@moomoojuiceman That will do it!
Have you had any issues with the hnt 26 forend loosening up ? Is the forend plenty stiff for a bipod?
No issues with the fore-end..very solid.
I once owned a .308 Browning BLR made in Belgium. Now I own a SAVAGE 99 C i .308. The BLR has the strongest action, to my surprise. I thought the "falling block" action of the Savage would be just as strong but nope! Both rifles have barrels that are too thin, IMHO.
