Three Qualities of a Good Shepherd - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon
Friends, we come to the Fourth Sunday of Easter, known as Good Shepherd Sunday. Jesus says in the Gospel, “I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” What is it about that image that sings to us across the ages, from the pages of the Bible to the present day? What I want to do is reflect on this image of the shepherd-first, in relation to Jesus, then second, in relation to leadership in the life of the Church.

Dear Bishop, You don’t know how The Lord is using your sermons to reach millions. The clarity of your messages are unmatchable. A lot of none Catholics listen to you. I know some Pentecostal pastors who love to listen to you. May God continue to bless you and your ministry and may He continue to use you for the expansion of His kingdom.
I pray for the Pope, Bishops, Priests, Seminarians, Novices, and Nuns: that they will be able to live their lives like The Good Shepard. That despite flaws, they will set the example, and be present to the people they serve. I also pray that God will continue to guide me, and help me follow only His will. Thank you, Bishop Barron.

Would be an idea to pray for the children damaged by all those people you listed, also for the directly tortured and murdered people at the hands of Catholic church employees throughout it's history, maybe they could do with a prayer or two
God willing I will be priested in July 2024, and I will re-watch this again in the build up as well as many times after to remind me what it's all about. Thank you Bishop.

@@FiatMaryann Thank you and God bless. With God's help I'll do my best to follow your wise advice.
I was lucky once as I saw a real shepherd with his flock. I was driving somewhere in south Bavaria, Germany and north Switzerland. I had to stop as the Shepperd stopped the traffic so his flock could cross the road. It was a magical moment. So humble! Listening to the sheep cross the road so confident and trusting. I am lucky to see what the Lord Jesus meant! Thank you lord.
Wonderful , as always. Such a gift to have these sermons accessible and free to all! Thank u Bishop Barron! ✝️
Dear Bishop Baron, I am from Sri Lanka and very recently started to follow your preachings. Our relationship with the bishops here as sheep and shepherds are totally different from what you are explaining today. The only thing I can do now is for praying for them asking my Lord to give them wise and humble hearts to understand their people as you. God bless you....Dear Bishop Baron...
Jesus who passed through the locked doors will pass through our locked hearts too

Bishop, I'm a sheep who has kind of been fallen away, or at least been behind the flock, and after hearing your homily I wish I could give you a hug.
Winona Rochester is very fortunate to have Bishop Baron as their leader. However, we are blessed to have his homilies as well. Thank you, Bishop Barron.
The best presentation of leadership (in the secular sense, too) that I have ever heard. Leadership, as opposed to management. Should be shown at every management training seminar!
You are a good Shepard Bishop God bless you in your ministry 🙏🏻❤️🩹
Thank you, Bishop Barron, for being a good shepherd in the church today.
Bishop Robert Baron the 21st century Archbishop Fulton Sheen. You are a wonderful recreation of the masterful voice of Archbishop Sheen so long missed and so much needed today. God love you!

Please pray for my family members who have fallen away from the Church. Especially my brother Rob and my son Ben.
So illuminating. I can see clearly the holes in my leadership. This message will increase my effectiveness. Thank you, Bishop Barron. God bless you.
May the 'Word on Fire', through you Bishop, on this Good Shepherd Sunday, reach out and bring back home all those who has left the Church and wandering, helpless and living in misery.
This should be required listening for all clergy.
Thank you Jesus for attending to those of us who have fallen behind. I am a sinner and you still take of me. 🙏💞🙏💞

This is one of the most unassumingly best homilies I've ever heard. Thank you Bishop Barron 🙏
I just want to add my voice to what has already been said here in saying Thank You, Bishop Barron, for you, your ministry, and your sacrifice. Words can not describe how helpful your Sunday sermons are to us! We are praying for you every day.
I took strength from this sermon as I applied it to my being a father. My “sheep” have grown and are thriving, Praise God, but still, I check in on them and offer my help and guidance anyway I can.
Thank you Bishop for this special explanation!
Great homily, thanks bishop
I'm a Christian, but have watched and listened to a lot of Bishop Baron's guidance. He has helped to calm me, to give me insight, to answer questions, and to offer refuge when I feel consumed by sin or sinful nature. I am grateful that he uploads these words, and I am allowed to listen and study even if I'm not a Catholic. Thank you Bishop.

It’s not. We tend to think our world is constrained by our geography. My diocese is so alive! So many beautiful couples with 6+ kids in attendance. That says nothing about Latin America and Africa where the Church is thriving! Asia is also an interesting place where the Church is flourishing. Korea and Japan are becoming Christian even if its only in a small part. God bless you!

Our Church will wither when we do! Peace to you.
Dear Bishop, I always appreciate your content. I was raised Catholic in a Catholic family that was "sleepy" to the Church. Going to church stopped being frequent many years ago, as a child, until we stopped going altogether. We became non-practicing Catholics. We fall asleep to the Church but not to faith. By faith, I decided to return to the Church after... reading the Bible. It awakened something in me that I had been crying out for for a long time: a thirst for belonging but more than that, a hunger for the Eucharist. From an inert position, I started to share my faith with my friends (they belong to another religion). In the theme of the Good Shepherd, which I deeply relate to the Divine essence existing - in its fullness - in the human condition of Jesus, I was approached with the question: How did Jesus know the hearts and thoughts of people, the past of the Samaritan woman, the death of Lazarus, Nathanaiel under the fig tree,..., and not knowing the day or the hour; the place where Lazarus was buried, for example? I replied that Jesus, being a man, was unaware of things that the human condition dictated but that, being divine, and Shepherd of his sheep, he knew their past, their thoughts, their state. The Good Shepherd knows His sheep (body and soul) but, everything earthly (day/time/place) was dissipated in the humanity of Christ. He came for His sheep and He saw and knew them as only God can know us. Was my answer wrong? I am re-learning all aspects of faith and sharing it is still not always easy for me.
Thanks again Bishop Barron. As lay people we also need to be Shepherds in our local communities not just the clergy. Especially with the flock that has fallen behind and is need: evangelization, care of the sick, visiting the needy, etc. Thank you Father Barron for opening my eyes and seeing clearly the word and truth of scripture.

Yes, by virtue of our baptism, we are all priest, prophet, and king!
You were my good Shepard everyday when you said mass all during the Covid situation. Started my day with hope and peace.
Thank you.
Several years ago, I invited a local family, who raise sheep, to bring her sheep to a class of younger children ( grades 1-4) and explain what it means/ takes to take care of her sheep. She explained the true work and the time it took to take care of her sheep. What the children found most astounding was that as the sheep ran around in the classroom area, the sheep would not respond to the children as the children tried to get their attention. However, once the sheep heard their " shepherd" the sheep stopped what they were doing and returned immediately to their " shepherd" it was a great learning as we talked about the Good Shepherd. It truly was effective lesson.
Well, I knew two shepherds - my grandparents, who were shepherds in the early twentieth century back in the Abruzzo mountains. When my grandfather would read aloud the Christmas story and come to the part about shepherds, he would say, "That's us," even though by then the family members were teachers, lawyers and business people. I remember being at work in the eighties when, since the computers were "down" as happened then, someone started chatting about grandparents. One colleague's grandfather had been a judge, another a distinguished business owner ... when I said mine were shepherds, they laughed with disbelief. Impossible that someone working alongide them in a Manhattan office had lowly shepherds as forebears. The conversation was growing testy when my boss noted, "We work here in a hermetically sealed business office under fluorescent lights, and her grandparents worked on the sunny Italian hillsides." That made them stop and consider the many brilliantly lovely days they spent staring at computer screens. A quick last thought: There are many sheep in this country and around the world. Who do we think tends to them? And what do we call these people? Cowboys? No, I guess we can describe them as "shepherds."
May God continue blessing you Bishop Barron 🙏
We need more good shepherds and religious leaders like you Bishop Barron. Many of our youth have veered away from our beloved Catholic faith. We Pray for a Greater understanding of why, as much as we Pray for an increase in faith, especially the religious life. As always, May God Bless You! In Jesus, The Good Shepherd's Name We Pray!❤
My neighbor, now 86 came to America at age 15 as a Shepard. (We have sheep in Dixon CA). His brother is a priest. He’s a joy to have as a neighbor. He and wife raised awesome children and grandchildren. As I mother, knew my children were not mine but given me by the Good Shepard. Seems like all Catholics understand the Shepard on some level. ( I was lost and then I was found). Enjoy your talks. Peace to you and all who listen.
Thanks Bishop Robert Barron. Thanks a lot. Yes, You’re a good shepherd! God bless you. Be sure that, here,,in the Amazon Region of Brazil, in the middle of nowhere, there many People praying for you. Day and Night. May God be always with. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏

My life would've been a lot different had I understood the church when I was young. I have always waked with God, but lacked the tools Bishop Barron eloquently delivers. My life is changing for the better and has a momentum that's a little unsettling at times. I used to think I had a good life, it's not that it was so bad, it's just become so much better now. When the student is ready, the teacher will appear! Thank you for your hard work and devotion.
Thank you Bishop Barron for using your Good given talents to bring us closer to our Lord Jesus Christ!
Love your homily, Bishop Barron. Thank you very much, you have added clear meaning of how a Shepherd should be. God Bless Bishop!!!
Thank you, Bishop Barron for your teachings and for sharing your ministry. I have always found strength and courage in our Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ!
What a message for a father to a family. That's hard enough. I couldn't imagine scaling this up to that of a diocese or the whole church. May God bless you.
It’s hard to be a good sheep too. The spirit of the age for hundreds of years has been to rebel and resent anyone who tries to shepherd you in any form. Early in my conversion I nearly fell under the sway of former Protestants who brought their toxic spirit of pride and selfishness into the church and now sit in judgment of the entire upper hierarchy over them as if there’s no need for humility. I had to say to myself you better trust that if the leaders made a mistake along the way then the Holy Spirit will lead them to correct it, and if not you’ll be glad if you don’t think your judgment is better than everyone else. ❤
Prayers on this Good Shepherd Sunday for an increase in vocations, for the return of those who have wandered away from the flock and for the health and safety of those who currently shepherd us . Thank you, Bishop Barron, for your creating Word on Fire. You lead many souls to Jesus. God bless you and your ministry.
You tie so many thoughts together for Reflection!! Thanks so much!!
God has, in fact, thought of us from eternity and has loved us as unique individuals. He has called every one of us by name, as the Good Shepherd 'calls His sheep by name.' *- St. Pope John Paul II*
Peace be with you from Indonesia 🙏
In my science fiction novel, I used the imagery of the good shepherd to describe the role of the starship captain, and I used precisely this imagery and language. I think there is a tendency for science fiction to be atheistic and dystopian and so I wove Christ figure imagery all through my book. My best friend Jo is a shepherdess so I ran all my reflections past her to assure accuracy.

I actually keep sheep. It wasn't until I lost some and had to search for them that it hit me how the Shepherd goes looking for the lost sheep! Now I have had tiny lambs which are orphans and trying to save them. These real life experiences had really illuminated these verses for me. Now I get it!
May God continue to bless us with Our Good Shepherd, Bishop Baron!!❤

Bishop Baron, Thank you from PNG. Today our Parish Priest Fr. Moko came, so timely, he came at a time when the sheep here at 8mile, settlement, Port Moresby, were getting lost. It was so good, many lost Catholics came. When you shared, "Shepherd has to lead in front,, in the midst and behind his flock, I had tears. Iam thank full for Fr. Moko. He came to us, in a canvas shelter, drunks all around, loud music and swearing, but we were home and safe with our shepherd. Thank Bishop keep the fire burning.
So powerful and meaningful Bishop Barron. We are beyond blessed to have you teach us and bring us closer to Jesus!! Thank you and God Bless You!!
Bishop Barron, thank you for another thoughtful homily. Your homily reminds me of part of St. Patrick's Breastplate Prayer: "Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me."
Thank you Bishop Barron this is one of my most favorite teaching I have ever heard from You. Thank you so very much, and may Almighty God bless You for this. Amen 🙏🙏🙏
God bless you always dear Bishop Barron. Thank you for the homilies and for being a good shepherd following Jesus

The more humble you become with Agape Love for all, the more beauty you will see in your Family and Neighbors. The more Joy and happiness you will have all around you. The lower pride unfurls its haughty wing, The more Agape's love begins to sing. Humility, a cloak of gentle grace, Reveals the beauty etched on every face. In family's eyes, a deeper light now gleams, Their faults dissolve, replaced by cherished dreams. Neighbors you once saw as strangers cold, Now shine with stories waiting to unfold. For when we bend, with hearts devoid of pride, The world around us, blooms from far and wide. Joy finds a home, where kindness takes its stand, And happiness, a gift in every hand. So shed the weight of self-importance grand, Let Agape's love transform this barren land. Embrace the world with open arms and see, The boundless beauty, waiting boundlessly. Very inspiring
May The Holy Ghost make all Priests and Bishops good shepherds, will to give up their lives for your sheep.
It is certainly important to consider how all three qualities discussed in this homily are important for a shepherd to combine. Let us keep praying for the shepherds of our church, including Bishop Barron, as they faithfully answer God's call to lead us into Eternal Life. Furthermore, let's consider how all of us, the baptized faithful, can exhibit these qualities: offering vision, having a ministry of presence, and supporting those who have strayed and have other needs. Let us, like our shepherds, keep in tune with God through prayer so that we can have the vision and the guidance to know how to support and be present to others. As for the ministry of presence, I think about Father Kevin, the pastor at St. Teresa of Avila Roman Catholic Student Center, the church I attended in college, and how he made himself present to the students on campus as well as at the church. I try to offer that ministry of presence to my Religious Education students at church and elsewhere, like attending their plays at their schools. Indeed, let us thank God for so many good priests who shepherd us and reveal the heart of the Good Shepherd. Happy Easter! Alleluia!
God bless you, dear Bishop Barron.
I wish the sermons at my church were as good as yours.
