Face Your Fears - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Friends, the Gospel on this Fourth Sunday of Lent includes one of the most famous verses in the Bible: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life” (John 3:16). In many ways, this verse is the Gospel in miniature. But we can isolate this line too much and miss the real import of it when we don’t attend to what happens right before-namely, Jesus’ reference to the serpent in the desert.

I am an alcoholic. It has been my coping mechanismn for years for different reasons. Past week I started to pray to the Lord to help me to defeat this addiction. I quit drinking today, it's hard but I feel the Lord helping me. This sermon coming to me today, shows me that the Lord is on my side and is standing with me in this hard battle. The Lord will save me. Thank you bishop for this sermon. Pray for this sinner if you can find it in your heart.

I am starting to believe that excellent sermons via social media will help revive the Church . Too often we hear awful sermons every Sunday at our parishes. We understand the holiest and sacrifice of the mass, but tolerate poor sermons. I listen to Bishop Barron every Sunday, sometimes before mass. Let’s start the trend. Bravo Bishop.

In my 70 years of life and of being a Catholic, I have heard too many sermons/homilies telling me it is my fault that Jesus had to suffer so terribly. That I should be constantly guilty for causing Jesus’ suffering and death, that because of my sins I will never be good enough. In the back of my mind I felt, not so, there is more to this. Yes, I am sorry for my sins (and I go to confession often) but it is the love and mercy of God given to me through the absolute love of Jesus in his redemptive death on the cross that is my source of joy, not guilt. I am loved completely because nothing will separate God’s love from me, and everyone. Jesus took on everything, every suffering not to make us feel guilty but to show us and give us the embrace of mercy, love, freedom from guilt. How do we respond to that? By taking up our cross daily and loving and forgiving and being joyful. Give each other a smile.

The greatest sin of this age is indifferent reduction. Right now what is presented to the public as the discipline of life and the mission of the organization is not what is going on behind the scenes. The good stuff is presented to the public so they leave the organization alone. What is really going on is only given to a select few. Anyone who wants to grow in faith authentically is presented a discipline nobody or very few people are doing. It’s a heartbreaking situation that people just don’t want to do the mission of Christ as prescribed but demand to lower it to worldly standards. It is a symptom of the evil generation who have reduced everything. The goal of religious life has been wounded greatly, which is to witness the mystical union with God to those on earth. Vocations are low because they made everything you can do in religious life the same as you can do in secular life. Why go to religious life at all and have to deal with such reductions? It’s heartbreaking to those with authentic vocations to religious life.

A point for further discussion that would be beyond the scope of this homily is how much exposure to give ourselves. If we're afraid of something, it might not be helpful to start out full force, like Christ facing the worst of human suffering. Since I'm not an expert, I'll leave it to them to offer their insights.

What makes you think your faith is respectable? Men have always known God as a tool of fiction & nothing fails like prayers in a children's hospital. How is it possibly ethical to suggest the equivalent of a notion we all travel with one foot in a stranger's fantasyland, using fictional vocabulary: prophecy, prayer, etc.? Moses: World's worst navigator leads everyone following as if one travels best with one foot in The Garden of Eden. Believers mindlessly suggest it is a good idea for us to suspend our disbelief, granting God made Mormons so Christians would know how Jews feel. Jesus Christ says faith is worthless as a mustard seed when it comes to telling mountains to move with expectations of obedience. The Christian gospels have a joke called the zombie apocalypse and they are played to embarrassment about it now. The gospels have given us the new Jews, but this one gives guidance to eat the body & drink the blood, which is abhorrent, this is what comes of putting the new wine of Christ into an old Jew wineskin. Atwill rests upon great shoulders & now we know the joke. Jesus says, think not I come with peace, but sword, & lists more horrors of The Teacher. What makes you think your faith is respectable? Men have always known God is a tool of fiction. Gal 3:13 "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us." It is by faith in God we have Moses: World's worst navigator, with one foot in The Garden of Eden. God & Faith have a perfect record of doing nothing, so we have the sayings, God helps those helping themselves & nothing fails like prayers in a children's hospital. The beauty of this narrative is the symbol of the Messiah crucified by Roman solders. The Jews are forever defeated by a remembrance of …. See videos: New research expands on J Atwill's discovery that the story of Jesus is a parody of Emperor' Titus' victories. Paul the Apostle: Liar and Conman | James Valliant, Rabbi Tovia Singer Faith is used all the time in this fiction. All men know God is a tool of fiction. The context is a gathering crowd upon which Jesus is reminded of Jonah. The point is faith is worthless: The superstitious are dangerous. Luke 11:29-36 "As the crowds increased", Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. Jonah 1:15-17 KJV So they took up Jonah and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging. Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows. The superstitious crowd is wicked. The Joke is having a miracle in every chapter. The link is to Moses, who we know as the worst navigator in the world, with one foot in The Garden of Eden. Gal 3:13 "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us." This is Jesus giving a righteous tongue whipping to people seeking signs, wonders, a circus, a clown, a miraculous happening. Those seeking someone with magic powers. Of course, such things are impossible, because if you had the smallest amount of faith, you could move mountains in fantasyland. Everyone knows God is a tool of fiction. The wicked believes by signs. The Book of Jonah 11 Then they said to him, "What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?" For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. 12 He said to them, "Take me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will quite down for you; for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you." Rsv It is by faith Jonah was picked up and tossed overboard, being mindless, he asked for it.

@davido3026 please read John 14; 16+17! "And I (Jesus) will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever- 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you". Jesus himself said so! I believe Him!🙏

@lidaskissners1017 The Lord Jesus was addressing his 12 Apostles . They received him on resurrection Sunday and was again confirmed on Pentecost day when Peter addressed the jews on Pentecost day 33AD!! He confirmed Peter's decision on electing a new Apostle!! The Holy Spirit dwells in the Catholic church ever since!! Do not twist the word!!

Thank you Bishop Barron. Your brilliant mind, and your healthy psychological state, and emotional maturity, along with your faith and love of service, inspire me. God bless the clarity of your heart and mind! (And yes, I have a illustraion of Shakyamuni Buddha seated in meditation, while his projected fears swirl vividly around him. It takes courage, and humility, to have faith). Faith, not fear. May all beings be happy, healthy, safe, and know true liberation. Salaam~Shalom~ Peace 🕯🙏🏽💕

I just adore and look forward to your Sunday Sermon. We get so distracted during the homilies at church with noises and parish announcements prior to the homily that totally distracts us from the word of God. Thank you once again Bishop Barron - I fight with my fears everyday and ask God and St. Michael to defend us from all evil.

I have done this often in my life, but now I am put to the test. I am slowly dying from an abdominal wall disorder that requires my 5th surgery in a little over a year. The pain is intense and I can’t not take opioids. The first four surgeries only made me worse but I can not go on as is. This surgery will be worse by far than the first four. I have a 10 year old child and a wife that need me. We are financially strapped. I have been praying for much of the year. I have never felt anything like this suffering and beg for death every night. My life insurance would help my family but they need me healthy more than the money. I have to go on but it is so hard.

All Bishop Barron's sermons are meaningful, but this one was among his most powerful. I will now revisit the scene in "The Chosen" when Nicodemus has his clandestine meeting with Jesus on the rooftop. We, believers, must enjoy His Kingdom on Earth, but the anticipation of His full embrace in Paradise makes me restless for the fruition of our faith journey.
