What Is the Lord’s Prayer About? - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Friends, our Gospel for today is St. Luke’s version of the Lord’s Prayer, the Our Father. This prayer, which is probably recited millions of times a day all over the world, includes some of the best-known words on the planet. But what do they mean? It might be good for us to walk slowly through Luke’s version to see what this great prayer is about-and what we are asking for when we pray it.

I spent over 2 months in the hospital receiving multiple rounds of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant and then over a year quarantined in my home, and this prayer brought me great comfort. It taught me to completely surrender to God's will, knowing how much he loves us. At diagnosis I was give 2 months to live, at most. That was almost 7 years ago. Even with treatment, my odds of surviving were about 20%. Today I'm cancer-free. God is so very Good.

I’m listening again a year later. Since my first comment I’ve officially become a Catholic, lost my earthly father, and become a daily pray-er of rosaries and novenas. Well, almost daily. I’m also donating to several Catholic charities, although I’m praying for an improvement in my own prospects so I can contribute more. May thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

The Quran says the sun sets in a small spring of hot muddy water, hail comes from mountains in heaven, sperm turns into congealed (dead dried) blood then turns into a baby, women have sperm coming from their upper ribs . . . I could go on and on with errors and contradictions in that book. Muhammad was an adulterer, murderer, thief, and a caravan robber. The Quran and Muhammad himself said he had no miracles. Muhammad was poisoned and died and is in a grave. Jesus raised the dead, made the blind see, calmed the storm, and forgave sins. Only God forgives sin. Jesus is alive in heaven. @@SamA-xu9gy Your inadequacy to understand the Trinity isn’t the fault of God it’s the fault of you. It’s one essence (God) manifesting himself as 3 persons. The doctrine of Tawhid doesn’t make any sense. You believe that God is one and he cannot be separated into parts or have any hypostasis. Yet you believe the Quran is uncreated & eternal? Is the Quran God? No? then how is there a separate thing from God which is uncreated and eternal if God is one and God is the only thing which can exist outside of space and time. You’re delusional. This talk on the Lord’s prayer was great! A grace that came to me about the lords prayer is when we say forgive Me my trespasses as I forgive those who trespass against Me. It did not say I need to forgive myself. For years I had regretted how I treated my wife before she died. I could not forgive myself but one time Bishop Brennan of the Columbus diocese gave a homily and said” The lords prayer doesn’t say you need to forgive yourself it says you need to forgive others and God forgives you” I was enlightened by the Holy Spirit because I realized I was forgiven! I presented this to Bishop Brennan and he took it with him when he went to New York to be the new bishop there. I also was approached by another man who was his wife and he felt the same way.

Abraham had two sons Isaac and Ishmael. Ishmael was the illegitimate child who followed the path of error which led to your False religion. Isaac was father of Jacob who produced the line of David The Great King of Israel through who's line Salvation would come. Jesus Christ who's name literally translates as "Saviour Anointed" is One who was prophesied about throughout the Old Testament. He is Both God and man. He is the sacrificial Lamb who takes away the sins of the world and the ONLY path to salvation. He is LOVE personified. He died for our sins and rose from the dead on the third day and has sent his Holy spirit to be among us to protect us and guide us. God bless you for taking time to post so many of these beautiful videos to help us all to better- understand God’s word, His prayers just as you’ve explained here, The Lord’s Prayer and so on. You are the epitome of a “man of the cloth” whom I remember Priests, Bishops used to be growing up in a Roman Catholic home. Many Priests, Bishops, Cardinals have fallen away from grace, from the church. It’s sad! YOU are a true disciple of God. I respect and appreciate you and how wonderfully you convey the meaning of God’s word without deviation from the truth and the “good” that our Holy Father, Our God is all about that which is LOVE. My words pale in comparison to the praise you deserve but understand that I salute you as an AWESOME Bishop! I nominate you as our next Pope. He will be gone soon so let us elect You as our next Holy Father Pontificate on earth. Never allow anyone to corrupt you or persuade you from following Our Lord. In saying that being trespassed against is something that needs to be forgiven, Jesus shows how valued we are. Think about it. If we were just worthless sinners, worms in the dust, etc. how can we be trespassed against? We are nothing. Jesus implies in the prayer that we have so much inherent value that if we are wronged it is such a big deal that we need to forgive the wrong! I know I am of enormous value because Christ claims me as his. What a revelation.

Thank you bishop Barron for echoing the truth. The Lord's prayer as the whole spiritual life we face and the graces -supersubstantial food -right praise we need, provided for by the Father, through the Son and the Holy Spirit. May the Lord be always with you bishop. Godbless you.

When we are at a very low point, for instance, when we are in mourning, it may be hard to trust and have courage and joy. But I have to remember that Christ said I am with you always always. He blesses us in ways, evident and subtle, and he reaches us through other people. Praise God.

I was searching for a meaningful interpretation of the Our Father after a few weeks I could find nothing. Then today Bhp’s Barron’s Sermon from a year or so ago here was my answer. T listen to this several times and save it to share and revisit when you need reinforcement. From Jesus’ lips to ours. AMEN.

🆘️👉I see the power of this prayer everyday & night, as I have been blessed to have the sight of who is cursing or attacking me in sorcery etc. This prayer makes Satan go backwards to wherever he comes from plus demons, UFO-craft demonics. ITS POWER! "THE OUR FATHER!" To the glory of GOD I see. Thanks be to GOD, Amen Amen.

Thanks so much Bishop Barron. I appreciate the explanation about the 'supersubstantial bread'--that helps a great deal. And I will try to reflect on these thoughts the next time I say this prayer. I remember one priest I saw in confession asked me to say the Our Father very, very slowly for each of my sins--for my penance--and it really did make an impact on me. God bless you always.

I had to learn it for my first communion I was 7 that was in 1952. It pretty much was explained to be then. It bothers me that perhaps it's not standard procedure in this new post Vatican II church to explain it the way I had it done. This to me was a very nice refresher for a prayer I try to say at least twice a day often more.

Hint: Learn the sacred NAME of our heavenly Father. I cannot believe we are instructed to pray ONE prayer, about His HALLOWED NAME which we are to look for, and to Learn -- and yet this preacher declined to reveal it, and instead, repeatedly used a pagan Title of "god". Whoa!

Jesus was praying to God . Jesus is not equal to God, Jesus is not God or the Son of God Matthew 26:39 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” I invite you to Islam and worship the one true, living God directly, without intermediaries
