Knowing Jesus Personally

Friends, Christians often speak of “having a personal relationship with Christ” or “knowing Jesus personally,” but what does this actually mean? Is it possible? How do we go beyond knowing about Christ to truly knowing him? That’s what Brandon Vogt and I discuss on today’s “Word on Fire Show.”

Be it known: Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit! Hear me when I say, ye that are Catholic have been deceived and know not God. Ye worship Mary, praying to her; when God tells his to worship none other than him. It is idolatry. Catholicism has its own Bible and teachings, which are blasphemous to the word of God: the Holy Bible. As ye follow the teachings of man and not God; ye hear the pope, but not Jesus, yet ye claim to be his disciples! These are but a few things I named ye dwell within; there are many more. I tell you now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father! There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you! They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God... Read the Holy Bible (KJV) daily and every time before you read, pray to the Father and ask: "Lord I ask that you give me understanding of your word, that I interpret it the way you want me to, and none of my own. I ask you in Jesus' name, amen." Revelation 22:8-9 KJV 8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. 9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. Acts 2:38 KJV 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Luke 11:13 KJV 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? John 14:21-24 KJV 21 *He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.* 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, *If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.* 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and *the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.* 3 John 1:11 KJV 11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. *He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.* 1 John 3:6-10 KJV 6 *Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.* 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: *he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.* 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 *Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.* 10 *In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God,* neither he that loveth not his brother.

@@Call_Upon_YAHwe do not worship Mary. That would be the heresy of idolatry condemned an uncountable number of times by the Church. Praying to her and other saints is merely communication, we’re asking them to pray for us in the same way that you would ask your friend to pray for you. I'm a practicing cradle Catholic. I never thought my faith could be stronger until the last 6 months of my sister's life as I cared for her 24-7 with brain cancer. I KNOW the Lord was with me. I felt his presence strongly. I called on Him often as she could do nothing herself. I was able to carry her only by the Grace of God. I actually felt him in our trials and Know Christ conquered death on the cross and she is with Him now. All praise & Thanksgiving to God

When my father had dementia and was praying aloud with complete unawareness of mom and I in the room, it became evident that he had such closeness to the Lord that he spoke as I would never dare to. Instead of praying for his health which had taken a sudden, sharp turn, his prayer was asking, pleading with the Lord to, "...give the people work. You have done it before...so do it!" I thought at that moment how like a child he spoke to God. I will never forget it.

Thank you Bishop for your words. Last Saturday I went to confession after having been away for three months. Although I was not drowning in deep sin, when I left the confessional I experienced such joy that I could only compare it with the joy of receiving Christ in the Eucharist. I realized then that Jesus is with me in both sacraments, perhaps more fully in one than in the other, but He is there.

A heartfelt thank you Bishop Barron. I grew up a Protestant, became and agnostic/atheist in my 20's, and returned to a belief in God in my 40's. The things I witnessed during the last few years removed all doubt of the authenticity and the wonder of our God, of His Son and Holy Spirit. It came after I prayed for faith, just any faith at all. I wanted what I didn't have. I used to think I couldn't reach out, pray, try to yearn for Christ if I had doubts at all. I pushed against disbelief, and prayed that God would melt away my cynicism and jadedness. To make a long story short, He did indeed, praise be to Christ our Lord. You have been like a beacon to believers, young and old, new and seasoned alike. I am considering a conversion to Catholicism. Please know that people like me, newly redeemed, long for the clarity and unwavering belief that the Catholic Church and its traditions represent, what it was and is, not what it can become to be more accommodating and relevant in the modern age. God Bless you Sir, continue to be that representative of Christ. Shine in clear, loving, and steadfast opposition to this present age.

Attending mass, saying the traditional rosary (Bishop's own impeccable recitations on youtube)and these days virtual adoration helps for the house bound. Lots of little chants can be used. eg Jesus I trust in you (end summary of divine mercy chaplet), Into your hands Lord, I commend my spirit, friendly conversations with Jesus: What do you think Jesus, I should do here? I leave this problem to you to sort out for me, Come holy spirit and fill thy faithful with the power of love, etc, etc.

Gaitley in knowing , hearing Jesus, etc. Either through our thoughts , from other events, through our prayers , through our a activities . etc. Goals to become closer to Him. Etc. In church sitting in His presence, adorations, in quiet moments of looking over our events. To become closer, to feel His presence. Mother Theresa, St Pope John Paul, st Louis DeMontfort, St Maximiian Kobi, had strong devotion to Jesus loves and He spoke to hem spiritually and so all of us. Through our spirit we can have a personal connection relationship. ❤with our Saviour.. when I am worried so uncertain about my Circumstances, cross so to speak, He makes everything right. I love Him. We are soo fortunate that He is with us.

Thank you for a beautiful discussion with Bishop Barron! And thank you Bishop, for making a personal relationship with Jesus so beautifully clear! I love that we have this through THE CHURCH, for so many people, mostly protestants, nowadays say: you don't need a church to get to heaven... very disturbing to me! Where would be receive the sacraments but at Mass?! I thank God for converting me to Catholicism many years back. God bless you both, Bishop Barron and Brandon.🕯🕯🕯

All I can say is, we are all fortunate to be able to listen and absorb the words that Bishop Barron is speaking about, the Scriptures through his powerful and honest interpretation are becoming clearer and lovable, meaningful and absorbed into our senses 👏 “Christianity is unique!” By Bishop Barron, yes, indeed, it has no parallel anywhere because Jesus is the whole Body and Blood of Christianity 🙏 Well, talking about how Jesus looks like, my all time favorite and beloved picture of Jesus is that beautiful Image from the Sacred Heart Fathers Religious Community! Looking at that Image, Jesus eyes follow you in every direction (my family calls the Image as the Eyes of Christ) I always smile when looking up at that big framed picture while I pray because Jesus looks so beautiful, so loving, and so real to me, and, always looking straight at me! ♥️ And then I start crying because I feel so very humbled by His true love ♥️

Ah you hit on it - the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Just as every relationship is unique, our relationship to the Lord for each of us is unique, because it is about the inner life of Love that the Holy Spirit provides for us with Jesus. When He says He will not leave us orphans, the Holy Spirit is His gift to us make 'a personal' relationship possible. That is one reason why the sacrament of Confirmation is so significant ,and how as you say the mystical body of Jesus in the Church opens this mystery for us. You have also taught us before that our GOD is THE ONE WHO COMES IN SEARCH OF US NOT THAT WE SEARCH GOD, but we can respond to HIM. We have told you this before, and we strongly warned you that the Lord will punish those who do that. I was very disappointed at the way our Church leaders responded to the government's edicts during the pandemic, most especially the closing of our churches and suspending of Masses. If we truly believe in the real presence of Christ, body-blood-soul and divinity, how do we reconcile that with preventing the faithful from coming before the Tabernacle during our moment of most need (the Pandemic). I think we lost the opportunity to show the world that we do in fact believe in the real presence.

Re the listener's question about choosing a church....... Surely, it needs saying that the default is your local parish; and, only if that is found wanting, should you look elsewhere. And for those who are already full and active members of the Church and have moved into a new area, then they should be more inclined to join their local parish, even if it is found wanting, and be involved in its renewal.

I have schizophrenia, and I ended up with serious religious hallucinations and delusions, and it made me realize how fallen my conceptions of Jesus was. It was so messed up. It made me realize how important reverence is, like realizing that He always is way more than I understand. So I understand connecting to icons rather than a photographic image of Jesus. They say less than a photo, but what they say is reverent of the reality that is so much greater than can be contained in a picture. Photographs seem to think they know everything if that makes sense. In a lot of cases it doesn't leave room for anything bigger than the visual information hitting the lens. During my worst delusions Jesus withdrew from my sight even though it made me feel so lost and frightened. He was always in the still small voice, and I'm grateful He withdrew and His words to me weren't tainted by my confusion and the breakdown of my rational mind. Like if my brain is the camera, I tried to take a photo but God didn't give me a photo, He gave me an icon, and icons have less detail on demand, but more meaning, and more truth. It was really hard, and still is. I think my relationship with Jesus is marked by distance, darkness, but also trust and total helpless need. I got a puppy and a kitten and I think St Francis interceded a lot because I swear they sit there and remind me that Jesus loves me here and now, no matter how distant He feels, and they look up at me so lovingly whenever I am scared and He just seems so far away.

I believed I was invincible and had superpowers, I had no idea that I was even in danger, but my mom was the one who had to chase me across the country and try to figure out how to get me off the street and into care. It was a horrible ordeal. God was protecting me the whole time, and if nothing else I learned that God follows us even into the worst craziness. Even if he runs away from God he is still loved and God never gives up on us, least of all because of something as trivial as mental illness. no matter how all-emcompassing the danger when you are in the middle of the maelstrom, it's just trivial compared to God. He is so much stronger than our fears and problems and delusions. our brains are subject to the laws of physics but the laws of physics are subject to God and He hears us crying out to Him. Even when we are tricked into believing evil things, He sees through it all and just sees his beloved children who need Him.

@@Aaalllyyysssaaaaa Blessings on you...I think you may be right...My son had schizophrenia and it was harder on us than on him...but the psychotic breaks were tough. He is now in the presence of Jesus...he passed away in 2015. Even though we miss him much, I would not wish him back to this world...In exodus the Bible says, "I carried you on eagles wings and brought you to myself." He now sees the whole picture, and he's with God. I will see him again. Alysa, I wish you God's blessings and I'm going to put this here: I wrote a piece called "A schizophrenic's Psalm...The Lord it my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. He makes me to lie down in safety and sanity...He leads me with still thoughts. He restores my energy. he leads me in paths of goodness and responsibility for my identity's sake...Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of schizophrenia, I will fear no evil for He and my meds are with me...Acceptance and Love comfort me, They prepare a table full of confidence within me. In the presence of my friends, You anoint my head with clarity, so my thoughts aren't running over...surely His shadows of kindness will follow me all the days of my life...And I will dwell in the house of sanity forever. This is a beautiful video of Bishop Robert Barron. If you ever hear that this bishop is not a traditional Catholic, ignore it. This bishop is an incredible son of the Church, unfortunately in my opinion, some bishops today are not. I'm glad he is talking about this subject as many cradle Catholics are accused of not having "a Personal relationship with our Lord" I have found this not to be true. True Catholics have a relationship with Christ. The fact that we also have a personal relationship with His Holy Mother, does not take one bit of our relationship with Him. We also have a close relationship with some of the saints. These relationships, however, don't take anything away from Christ as I see Him, in person, 3 times a week at the Adoration Chaple. If this doesn't make you have a tight relationship with Him, nothing will. We don't have that privilege with our Lady or the Saints. So my relationship with Him its special in that I see Him in person, not only at mass of Sundays but also at the Adoration Chapple anytime I go there during the week. Unfortunately our protestant brethren don't have that privilege . That is why we must pray for their conversion. And as Jesus wishes, May one day we will all be one in the Church of Christ: The One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

This was truly fantastic bishop . Though I am 61 and have always been Catholic , I have learned so much from your sermon. I have some mental health issues and times feel lost. I question how I pray , I question what to pray and at times I feel a big void between me and the Lord ! At times I feel that he does not love me . Maybe it’s me , maybe I don’t allow the Lord to love me. Help ! Can you teach me how to pray !

If it’s at all possible that the listener who asked the question about a parish in Nashville sees this response , I’d suggest St. Ann Catholic Church in West Nashville. Sacramental roots, orthodoxed and reverence throughout, along with a humble and warm parish family.

During the start of "wokism", the Catholic Church was very much on board with it. At least here in the diocese of San Bernardino. I now understand the pain being revealed by some of our parish members but through that time of confusion the Protestant church was very much there for me and my family. I'm asking @bishopbarron to please 🙏 shut down the attacks on the Protestant church coming from these outside institutes. Let's make this about Jesus and move forward together. God Bless.

It is the Shepherd's job to seek out His lost sheep, not the sheep's job. We must be equipped BY the Shepherd to do His work or it can't get done. There's nothing we have that is not given us, that includes the vision and the abilities to do His bidding. If the church doesn't grow it's because of it's SOURCE holding back on His infinite potential! OVERWHELMING should be His VICTORY over evil!

Given how finely the language of theology can discriminate between the forms of things, it feels odd that it it cannot find two words to distinguish between a close relationship with a physical person, present in the flesh, and a similar, but necessarily different, relationship with Jesus, present in faith. Why not call them a personal relationship and a spiritual relationship? This might dissolve much of the baffled bemusement of many doubters.

So the bishop looks to a sanctuary lamp or to the eucharist to remind him of the Presence of Jesus. What about the "RIVERS OF LIVING WATERS flowing from the inmost part of his being"! If he had that, he wouldn't be looking for external signs of God's presence! If only all Christians had that, what an IMMENSE DIFFERENCE that would make! The invisible God would be plain to see in all true believers!

Carmelite spirituality always stresses friendship with Jesus! I became a Catholic by special grace in 1958 at the age pf 24. I am OCDS. I have never found that visual human images of Jesus do much for me….words do and interior prayer, imagining Jesus in me, and other ways I can’t put into words. And the sacraments. Deo gratias. +
