Three Months of Self Reliance | Hunting and Fishing Across Canada

Taking the final steps in food security over the last three months has convinced me that the self reliance foundation I starting laying thirteen years ago has finally resulted in the freedom that I've been seeking since I was a teenager 40 long years ago. I believe that at least the next 7 years are going to be tough, with high inflation, diminishing freedom of speech, mobility and quality of life and decreased access to healthy foods, clean water, cheap energy and rural living.
In this video, I document my life in Canada from September to December, including hiking in the mountains, flyfishing, bowhunting of small and big game (moose and deer), growing and storing food, making lard and bone broth, fleshing hides, cutting and wrapping wild meat and many encounters with wildlife - bear, deer, moose, caribou, bighorn sheep, pika, chipmunks, grouse, turkeys and more.

Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me.

“Excited about the future of the property”. You Shawn, me too and clearly countless others after reading all the accolades. You are one serious naturalist, horticulturist, philosopher, scientist and craftsman. One could wax on with endless paragraphs over respect and appreciation for your approach to survival and wilderness living. Your prowess with the camera and music, the rod and reel, the firearm and the bow, and the ultimate practical knowledge that you show, rank you in my book among the highest of all You Tube publishers. To have nobly recovered from a major financial loss and along that path, developed so much more evidence of a practical lifestyle is testimony to a remarkable human being. Even your culinary skills are enviable - and tasty too I bet! As a follower from the beginning, I look forward to the regular adventures that you share. Thank you again and again, with best wishes to you and your wife for bringing your unique lifestyle to me and others. Derek Lovemore, Brisbane Australia.

You mentioned that it was hard for young people starting out. So true. As a Father I tried to help my children and now as a Grandfather, I have a storage area where I have been putting away as many basic home starting things as I can. Things like kitchenware, home repair tools, measuring tapes, knife sets, a couple of frying pans, some dishes, basic silverware set, ....you get the idea..... Basically things they use now as teens and will probably need when they move into their own homes. Things My Wife and I did not have when starting out and really could have used. This is the way people did it in Italy and Sicily when I was there in the 1960s. Family helping Family.

From the beginning I have said the way you live is exactly what God intended. He did not create all this for us to gather in cities, factories, office buildings. I have always felt so blessed that I was raised to know where true riches lay. As I watched you hike and share the beauty of your “back yard” I was happy for you, that all your hard work has led you to where you belong. Many thanks for sharing your journey.

Being self-reliant is, in some part, attainable with the right mindset and ability to live off the land. I hope that those who watch his channel will learn something to help them become as self-reliant as they are able. Please note that I'm not saying that being completely self-reliant is possible for most of us. But we can hunt for food (wild game, mushrooms, etc.), grow our own vegetables and fruit, and preserve the food that we grow or purchase locally. Shawn James is an inspiration, a teacher, and a wonderful human being with a positive mindset, and a supportive family. Thank you, Shawn, for sharing your life with those who watch his channel and support his approach to life.

it's not attainable at all. it's just not possible for every one of the 7 billion people in the world to all live like him. He's living his best life but it's utterly wasteful as far as natural resources goes. In many ways, his self reliance is actually just being selfish.

@@yeahyeah7445 Pfft, and how much of your food is self-grown or foraged? Do you have anything left in a month should the international cappa-corpo chains of logistics break down? If (when) society goes down the crapper, how much of your daily life will be impacted in the first week? No electricity, running water etc. Self-reliance isn't an _"all or nothing YES/NO"_ scenario, humans don't work like that. No man is an island, obviously. And yes he has Callie who's is like a bundle of added wellbeing and therapy on four legs. He IS, however not reliant on supermarkets or tied to a corpo job, and is thus by far more self-reliant and capabie of survival than an overwhelming majority of the population. Should things break down tomorrow, he has the means to keep surviving along with his family. Heck, even the point you try to raise is backwards: He doesn't have a filming crew, methinks not an editor either. He films by himself and uploads to a platform himself. And he's obtained success in that by his own work. Seriously, the guy built his OWN HOUSE and you're trying to score some cheap "whell akshully not self reliant!"-gotcha over _video revenue?_ HAH! 🤡 👈🤣

To observe in real time, the inspiring activities of such a gifted guy, as Shawn James is, is therapy to me and no doubt many other older blokes (I’m 89 and disabled). We too, once felt the trickle of freshly turned soil between our fingers when gardening and gathering the crops from our nurtured soil. That remembered scent of fresh rain on the earth, the crunch of a fresh pulled carrot, the satisfaction of digging out a new vegetable, the feeling of a snowdrop on the face. The first bite of the trout on the line. Even the tiniest remembered natural instinct is awakened (for me) when watching Shawn dig his patch, chuck the toy for Cali, chop the wood, start the fire, call the ducks, cast the lure, saw the planks, hammer the nail, swat away the mossies. All the instinctive actions of one very clever natural craftsman, who has taken Life’s challenges to his advantage, applied intelligence, thoughtfulness and respect for his surroundings and evolved the entire bag into a modern pictorial for watchers to enjoy. Long may he continue his adventures to bring them to us. Well Done Shawn James. Derek Lovemore Brisbane Australia

Being self reliant I am learning one can be accomplished in any setting if one chooses to do so. In my outer edge of suburbia I live in, I have chosen to be self reliant with what I have. Hunting where I live is a non starter, but I having fishing, garden and solar. Even though this makes a small mark compared to those like you who can go fully off the grid, I feel I'm still contributing. I have learned much from you Shawn over the years, and have applied what I learned to take care of myself and my family. Thanks for that.

Just a tip, or maybe you already know, Simple Living Alaska cooked thier fat from a moose in large chunks, and a viewer told them the smaller you cut it the more surface area you have, so the next time they cut it into 1 inch cubes and they doubled thier yeild, they were amazed. Shawn, you are impressively way ahead of both, people & the times, in creating self-reliance on a grand scale that encompasses almost all of your lifestyle. However, it’s important that every one of your viewers consider that they can create some meaningful degree of self reliance in at least one or more aspects of their lives... certainly working towards becoming debt free & eliminating any use of credit cards that can’t be fully paid off each month; building up a savings as quickly as possible: if you are single & w/o children do as many even those working full time are doing, live in your vehicle ( extreme as that sounds) & save on rent for a while; my housekeeper has created a very large vegetable garden at a community plot ( cans & dehydrates) & put a chicken coup in the back yard for eggs & has reduced their food bill over 60%, paid off all their credit cards & car loan & is now making big headway in building their savings. She has also cut out spending a lot of money on non-essentials. A pathway to varying degrees of independence can progressively be built even if you can’t do the whole self reliance banana at Shawn’s level... you can still reduce/eliminate dependence in many areas of you life ...

And we know more than most about how much work you have put in to this property and the weather conditions you work through. Blessings to you and your family. Now we have been watching these new podcasts. I'm scratching my head. I'm seeing a different side of your life. Please explain. Brian and Debi Washington State

Good comment. 13 podcasts to date, some of the blanks filled in, but still a feeling for many that it's as much about the show as it is about being self reliant. He treads a fine line when the privacy of his family is at stake.

I frist got a kindle fire and go on KZread about 12 or 13 years ago. I found a video of this really fit man about my age with this funny 4 wheeled cart with small tires and two wheelbarrow handles on a pice of threaded rod. Talking about how he was going to clear a spot to build a cabin. I laughed out loud and said this will be interesting, thought for sure he would give it up and fade away after all he was doing it with hand tools. Well I was wrong I watched every video he put out and I have been impressed with you my friend. I have watched you build two cabins two outdoors kitchens and all of your out buildings. You are a true inspiration to me and all who have watched threw the years

Shawn how did you get that huge bull moose back to the cabin? Did I miss that footage? I am totally blown away at the beautiful footage of the wildlife, the falls the streams and video work you bring to us each and every week. You are very talented and to have all of this on video; will bring you joy when you're retired. You can visit these places when you won't be able to anymore. That is a prize in itself. Thank you for all of your efforts. I have subscribed to your channel for years now from your first cabin until now. I never stop enjoying it--always a new project or adventure drawing me in to your channel. Merry Christmas from our house to yours (I'd rather be in yours) Too late for me now. You are my son's age. I feel fortunate that I can still visit and walk the parks in my N.H. state. The White Mountains are truly grand..not sure if you've been there. If you haven't, you might want to venture there. And if you do, let me know, I would love to meet you wherever you are. Thanks! Susan

Many have forgotten how to find our nature. Also nice to find and find space to live. Which is a real shame. Best regards
