I'm guessing the city finds it cheaper to let criminals back on the street rather than putting them in jail. Taking care of jailed criminals can't be cheap. I don't exactly know where that money to keep jails running comes from, but housing criminals 24/7/365 must be quite expensive. Still, letting criminals do whatever they want puts stress on honest people. I wish they could send criminals far away from the city to a deserted island but that will never happen.

@@g3user1usait costs $43,000 to house and feed 1 prisoner per year. And they don’t always produce work that matches that value. If we were tougher on criminals the I can confidently say criminals would think twice before committing crimes. It’s just a matter of setting the law in place clear as day for people and actually prosecuting or taking more aggressive actions in arrests for people that are suspected of violent crime. Shoplifting should be treated the same way. The police are forced to be so soft that the criminals laugh at them it’s sad af.

@TheMerylme, Democrats are clearly doing just that. Otherwise NY wouldn't be such a disaster and there wouldn't be over TEN MILLION illegal aliens who were allowed to walk right into the U.S. or were brought illegally into the U.S. by the Biden regime which are now contributing to that "legalized crime" all whilst being a burden to the services that LEGAL American citizens pay for.... It was Democrats who were, during Trump's Presidency, trying to actually decriminalize ILLEGAL ENTRY into the U.S.

@@howardmallinger4942 I am not a fan of the DA, but if I'm being entirely real ... she's been put in an impossible position. If she does her job going after the small stuff, the Governor will do everything in their power to make sure the DA doesn't get elected again. If the DA doesn't go after Trump (who, rightfully, SHOULD be prosecuted for the insane crimes they committed), then the people of NY will do everything in their power to make sure she doesn't get reelected. She's between a rock and a hard place; everything that crosses her desk is worth time, attention and care... but she's got limited resources and is being pulled in several conflicting directions. So this is what happens. Realistically, what we need is better political system in our state. Having a Governor that's able to, essentially, direct the will of other elected officials (such as the DA) because of the power that they (the governor) wield over the political process is absolutely insane to me. So if we want to fix the issue, then we need to start at home: Local elections.

@@steveo984 And if they have no money to pay the fines? Hmm. No, being tough on crime is actually the kind and compassionate thing to do. It radically reduces crime, and many would-be criminals actually ending doing productive things instead. Like getting a job. Research Giuliani's time in office. Very tough on crime. Crime fell to historic lows. The city became (again) a nice place to live, work and visit, and incredibly fast. It's typical lib/progressive vs. conservative. One sounds good. The other works. The thing with "dead malls" is that the only "dead malls" are those that you have to drive to. City malls have never been dead, and what has happened in NYC has a lot to do with people not being able to afford to "live" in those coffin-sized apartments. People aren't going to visit these commuter stores if they can't afford it. Non-violent crime comes in three flavors, "desperation (eg homeless)", "planned (organized crime)", and "opportunistic (people who get their adrenaline rush from high risk/extreme activities)". The "not putting people in jail" is intended to not punish desperation and opportunistic crimes with jailtime under the assumption that they wouldn't do it if they weren't put in the position to commit the crime. Organized crime on the other hand knows what they are getting into. So if the city isn't putting people in prison, they will just keep doing it, knowing that the risk is low that there will be any real penalty to it. I'm not sure how NYC is going to be able to fix this without rounding up everyone who commits a shoplifting crime and forcing them to "work" for the city (eg cleaning up litter) until they've paid off the amount of property loss to the merchant.

My rabbit is very well-behaved. When we've taken them places, people never even know they're there. We've even taken road trips with her in the car for 6 hours at a time. When we stopped for a bathroom break, she refused to go in the grass, so we had to set up a quick litter box for her. THEN she was willing to go tot he bathroom, in the box.

@terrapyn99, they're also seeing their money go to illegal aliens that Adams, Hochul and other Democrats across the country are EMBRACING.... Their only complaints are "WE WANT MORE FEDERAL TAX DOLLARS TO PAY FOR TAKING CARE OF THEM!!" That's their only complaint about the "migrant crisis", not that thousands and in fact MILLIONS of people are in this country now ILLEGALLY, some of them are from gangs, murderers, human/drug traffickers, terrorists etc., and ALL due to DEMOCRATS like Biden, Mayorkas, Adams, Hochul, Johnson etc., AND of course the VOTERS who vote for these godless, lawless, anti-American Democrats over and over and over again. And yet cry and complain about being in "dire straits" which by their own votes, they helped create.... Laken Riley and Ruby Garcia and so many others would still be alive, children as young 14 who've been [redacted] by criminal alien predators and Democrat politicians still ACT like "We're doing something noble here!!" Beyond abhorrent.

The question is not why cities cannot protect their businesses and residents. The question IS why won't the cities protect their residents and businesses. Unfortunately, NY is NOT an anomaly. Major cities throughout the U.S. are intentionally failing to protect the residents and businesses. What is driving their attitude towards crime to their own detriment? Sinister.

I haven't watched in a while so was shocked by this video. I moved from San Francisco to Montana some some 40 yrs ago and stopped my regular visits there after a trip in 2007. I found my old home almost recognizable *then*. I made my last regular trip to Seattle in 2012 and haven't returned, because I was repeatedly and aggressively panhandled and found myself tripping over passed out and sleeping people such that it was impossible to take a walk. It seems all our beloved major cities are suffering from crime that's not being countered in any meaningful way. This has to stop, but I'm not sure how that can happen when this retail and transit crime has pretty much been tolerated for 20 yrs.

Had the grandkids staying with me all last week. One of the things they wanted to do was go to the local mall which I haven't been to in over four years. So I decided we would drive over and take a walk, as I pulled up to the Nordstroms entrance there was a crowd of blacks, 10-12 standing outside, sitting on the planters, smoking etc, so I passed it by and drove to the Belk's entrance I used to use because it was far from the food court. But once again there was a bunch of blacks standing around. That was it, the mall has had quite a few gang incidents and supposedly installed some sort of weapons detection system, told the kids sorry but it's not worth the risk. On a side note a few years ago the Durham NC black community decided they were going to boycott that mall for an entire weekend. It was great, Nordstroms reported their highest profits of the year due to almost zero inventory shrinkage, most other stores experienced the same.
