Thrawn's Plan for the Yuuzhan Vong -- The Empire of the Hand | Star Wars Legends Lore

Ойын-сауық

Thrawn may have been one of the greatest Imperials of all times, but his true goal was much more serious. All that and more on today's Star Wars Legends Lore video.
Check out Vision of the Future: www.audibletrial.com/eckhartsl...
Grand Admiral Thrawn saw a coming darkness, not from the Unknown Regions, but from outside the Galaxy. To protect against the Yuuzhan Vong, he established the Empire of the Hand, a Chiss-Empire hybrid.

To make Thrawn a pure villain undermines his character. He's not evil, he's just doing what needs to be done, and if what needs to be done is horrible, he'd do it. I like him having the galaxy's best interests at heart more

I like the idea that Thrawn was always thinking of the future, it suits his character. Given the galaxy's... lackluster response to the Vong in the beginning, I think having Thrawn around would have dramatically altered the war from the beginning. Not only that, I would have loved to get Thrawn's perspective on Vong art and culture.

  • @Farlomous

agreed, I also think Thrawn would have pieced together that the various anti-droid rallies were actually a covert attempt to so confusion and disorder within the galaxy and perhaps may have dealt swiftly with the instigators. The big question I see is, if he say were to have revealed himself later when the New Republic had better established itself, how well would he have worked with the Jedi in managing the Vong threat. Also, would have loved to have seen him weave his tactics in with those of Ackbar and Garm bel-Iblis.

For me Thrawn was always a realist and not the villain who wants to reign the galaxy as an emperor. For example in the new Thrawn novel he wants to save innocent people rather than saving resources for the empire. He is a man who wants to protect his people and in the case of invaders from another galaxy the whole skyriver galaxy (Star Wars galaxy) is his home and everyone in it are his people. Than means I think he just wants the best for the galaxy. That’s why he wasn’t a fan of the republic in the Clone Wars. He thought it was to unstable and corrupt. He always wanted the best for the galaxy. At the time, where the rebels just were terrorists, he also tried to kill them, because he believed that they bring chaos to the galaxy.

Well, I would also hope Zahn himself paint Thrawn not too soft in the future. I have no problems if Thrawn could be ruthless. He lives in ruthless times and faces dangerous foes. When he took command of the Remants, he brought them back from bitter infighting and faced a New Republic who not really was ready for a peace which was more than unconditional surrender, I guess (all that "revenge for Alderan" stuff etc.). I never saw him as a villain, not in the original Thrawn books (which are th reason why I side with the Empire....) and not in other material. Cold and calculating, yes. But never cruel without reason. On the other hand if someone get in his way...well, those people are lucky if the could regret that...

In the new canon Thrawn book, Thrawn still points out unknown threats in the unknown region, so there's a possibility we could see the Vong, just MUCH later, in episode 10 or something. I suspect Disney will keep the movies going for a while, so they might eventually just run out of ideas and use the Vong, too.

The Vong were very controversial when they came out in Legends and faced a lot of criticism for all the mass slaughter and torture they brought. For a lot of people this felt out of place in Star Wars and I have seen a number of opinions that the Vong fit better into Warhammer 40,000 than they do Star Wars.

The Yuuzahn Vong is Thrawn's entire motivation. The whole reason to why he joined Empire was to stop the Vong, that is the whole reason the Ascendancy sent him on his mission to infiltrate the empire. Which brings the point that since he is still loyal to the Ascendancy, the Galactic Empire was for a time practically an unwitting vassal of the Chiss.

In the end the appearence of Thrawn would have been largely positive since it was yet another attack which forced the NR to build up it's strenghth (Usually nations end up stronger militarly after the war then before the war if the conflict lasted for a long time), but the truth is that had he succeded/ had any imperial faction won the Galactic civil war and connected conflicts the galaxy would have been more preapeared for the invasion. And I definitelly like the idea of Thrawn having galaxy's best intrest in mind, as releatable villains/ villains which could be heroes if you were born on the other side of the barricade are my favourite opponents, althrough I think that he really though about the Chiss and their survival and not the galaxy as a whole.

I like the idea that Thrawn was only fighting for the Empire as he saw it as the only hope to defeat the Yuuzhan Vong, although the issue I have with the entire concept is that knowledge of such a threat to the galaxy, had it been made known could have helped turn the tide against the rebel alliance, and if they lost popular support they would loose the ability to re-equip and re-arm. It seems like a piece of information that the Emperor would use to full effect, because if the people were worried about their very lives they would see the Empires growing military forces as a positive and not a negative that was costing the populations time, money, and resources beyond what they could comfortably supply and thus there were shortages of many, many things, including basics such as power.

I always saw Thrawn as very calculating and having very little empathy and that doesn't really change with the new information in the Hand of Thrawn duology. It's also important to keep in mind that we are never in Thrawn's head during the Thrawn Trilogy, we only see him through Pellaeon's eyes, Thrawn was likely only focused on uniting the former imperial worlds before he would concern anyone with the impending Vong invasion. They are simply his rationale for doing what he did. Giving a villain a rationality for their actions doesn't make them any less of a villain. So I don't think he's less a villain in Spectre of the Past/Vision of the Future, more than it answers the question of why a logical Non-human would try to preserve an Empire in which most of the rest of the military hated him and the now-dead Emporer only used him. And why he would even join the Empire in the first place when there were so many other options for his exile.

Thrawn not just being a straight-up villain, I think, was something always intended. Zahn's writing style, even back during the Thrawn trilogy itself, loved to introduce a lot of grey into the conflict. He humanized the Remnant, gave them their own motivations and illustrated that they're really just people on the other side of the war, as opposed to the moustache-twirling supervillains it's usually portrayed as. Thrawn being given a different motivation just seems like a natural evolution

Pure Thrawn. He cared only about his people's safety. He knew that uniting the whole Galaxy against the vong was the only way to defeat them. He was never a villan, just chose the wrong side when he came back. But I bet of Pelleaon had been asked by Thrawn and Thrawn had been upfront about it, the Galaxy could have been completely ready and the vong war would not have lasted as long, and may not have even happened. If Thrawn had survived to see them, he would lose a little at first, until I got a good handle on their tactics, then once they saw his prowess they would probably need to build a super computer and upload copies of his mind to every ship with guns, basically outsmarting the vong at every turn.

  • @marcbartuschka6372

I would say Thrawn was never a pure villain. The type of Empire he stand for could act brutal but it was not interested in bloodshed when it was not for a good reason. He had no problem in aceptiong surrender of worlds who had betrayed the Empire, staying away from simple revenge and purges but instead using their ressources in a controlled way to strengthen his forces. He had no problem in holding the Noghri hostage of their own honour-code and the danger of starvation, but he tried to avoid using brute force when fear or convincing could to the job as well (as was his dealing with the smugglers as long as they did not cross him). I am also not sure if he would have automatically joined the Republic if he would have been alive at this time (or even if he would come back as a clone). If he had not died, very likely the New Republic would have been crushed by him (if he would have survived longer is another question, since I am not sure how much Palpy would have liked his success). But I think he would also studied the weak points of the Republic, and that government despite of beeing so powerful had already failed over and over gain if they were not constantly saved by a former moisture farmer, a criminal and some other very suspicious guys and girls. Not really an ally you could trest, isn't it? He may have supported Pellaeons idea of peace, but not outright join the New Republic, instead strengthening the Imperial Remnants and the Empire, and preparing for the worst.

Not exactly common in the sense of production numbers being in the millions, but yes, not something extreme, just a logical, highly advanced (and badass) next evolution of the TIE series. As for the general question Thrawn would have turned the Yuuzhan Vong into Looser Vong! (Pro-Thrawn bias intensifies.) :)

Thrawn loved studying different cultures. He probably would have been fascinated by The Vong. Perhaps he even would have been able to broker a diplomatic solution with them. Unlikely but possible knowing Thrawn’s intelligence.

Thrawn has never been a cartoon villain like Palpatine was, nor as ruthless as Vader or sociopathic as Tharkin. He is a rational and pragmatic commander, he knows to respect and understand his enemies. As such I find the Yuuzhan Vong to be an excellent motivaiton for him, it would enable him to pursue diplomacy with the New Republic but it might also push him to desperation and a traditional imperial ruthlessness.

I don’t think that I ever once saw Thrawn as a villain. I learned about Thrawn from The Lore Master and by the time I saw him for the first time in Star Wars Rebels, I saw him as someone who had a singular goal in mind. To paraphrase Eli Vanto from the Thrawn comic, “The Chiss don’t make idle boasts. They accomplish what they set out to do or die trying.” If chose the Empire, I’d follow Thrawn to gates of Hell and back.

I feel like the original Thrawn trilogy had portrayed him as straight up villain, yes better than other Imperials like Vader and the Emperor, but still not the guy you want in charge of the galaxy. He was softened more into an anti-hero when his backstory was filled in and I really liked reading about him Outbound Flight, but I kinda miss the simplicity of the idea of him just wanting to rule the galaxy because he thinks he is the best guy for the job.

I think Thrawn had the best interests in the galaxy at heart. In the correct lore (Legands to some people), the galaxy barely survived the Youzang Vong invasion. If Thrawn took over, these foriegn invaders would have been decimated. I believe Thrawn would have fought more ferociously and eventually won. The Chiss grew up with the Far Outsiders as a constant threat. So they would have been able to put up more of a fight.

I feel the same way, weak men like Borsk Fey'la wouldn't have had the reigns of the galaxy, not reacting to an obvious threat to the galaxy. Resources would have been moved, infiltrators would be rooted out, dare I say Nom Anor would have gotten a noghri knife to the heart. For one thing you would see massive numbers of Tie Defenders, and a revitalize imperial fleet.

I like it. It gives Thrawn much better reason to fight for the Empire. (That part puzzled me. Why would he fight for the side that could easily turn towards Chiss space? For that matter, the Empire is very anti nonhuman. Why fight for the side that regards you as inferior because of your birth?)

Thrawn never really seemed like the evil bad guy to me. He would sacrifice lives of the military and civilians sure, but he would only do it if it served a purpose. He never wasted lives needlessly. Sacrifice the few to save the many , and all that. If anything he always seem to have a good sense of honor and nobility.

I'm not super-big on the "Thrawn just wanted to save the galaxy" thing (though at a minimum I would say that he still probably as a preference for militarized autocracy over representative democracy, so that still keeps him in the villainy camp), but I like it a lot more than the claim that Palpatine's true goal was to be able to resist the Vong. If Palps wanted to fight the Vong, it would be because they wanted to take stuff that he wanted. No other reason.

Personally, had Thrawn approached key individuals in the New Republic (ie. Solo, Skywalkers, Antilles, Ackbar) and explained the threat, I think they might have joined him, or at least chose not to fight him. I think some would have also joined him or influenced others to join his cause. But the YV wouldnt have attacked when they did. They had been very strategic in their approach and time table. Thrawn being able to pull even a quarter of support from the NR or elsewhere would have pushed back the invasion. Albeit that civil war would have erupted then believing it was all a ruse, so either way, war it is.

Even if we only considered Timothy Zahn's original trilogy, Thrawn wasn't really a villain. He was in no way the brutal dictator that the emperor, Vader and many more were. He was simply the leader of the imperial remnants and he was doing what he needed to be done to bring an end to this conflict. The only action he did that was somewhat villainous was killing one of his own officer for incompetence. He committed no war crimes, and simply fought for what he believed in.

  • @SamuelJamesNary
    @SamuelJamesNary6 жыл бұрын

While Thrawn could have concerns about some extra-galactic group, be it the Yuuzhan Vong or otherwise... it's really unlikely. As during the original Thrawn trilogy, he never makes any reference to the Yuuzhan Vong, not even to himself. It would be something that would add a certain level of depth to his character, but it was never applied during the Thrawn trilogy and Thrawn even states that the "only puzzle worth solving" being the destruction of the Rebellion/New Republic. If he was that aware of the Yuuzhan Vong going back before the Galactic Civil War, he would have certainly made some mention to it or at least given the hint that the greatest puzzle would be more with regard to unity and not the destruction of the Rebellion/New Republic. In this, I've generally found a lot of what was written on Thrawn AFTER "The Last Command" being something of a retcon to try and either make him seem more brilliant or to make it seem like he and the Galactic Empire were the REAL good guys of the original trilogy. Which is pointless in the long run... The idea of the Yuuzhan Vong invading isn't bad... but to make the claim that a major character somehow knew about them is something that gets silly. For example, the Yuuzhan Vong were supposed to exist outside the Force, and thus couldn't be sensed through it. Yet, a lot of the Legends material that came out on Thrawn after "the Last Command" not only made it seem like he was aware of something going on but that Palpatine was aware of it before Thrawn was. In this... it's silly.

A more interesting and realistic plan would have been to negotiate a truce but not a ceasefire with the new republic. Maintain a heavily militarized border, causing the republic to also develop it's military, but don't attack. Yuuzhan Vong comes in behind Republic lines enslaving planets wrecking fleets etc, and then Thrawn comes in as a liberator bearing emergency relief aid to all the planets which the Republic had failed to protect.

I honestly would say Thrawn, even if you give Tarkin the Death Star. Thrawn was aware of the Death Star and what it was supposed to do, and he knew Tarkin and his tactics, more than likely he had seen the kind of art Tarkin admired. Tarkin was all about the big intimidating ships, star dreadnoughts and the Death Star being testament to that, Thrawn would have no problem turning that against him.

Honestly I much prefer a more complex character that is not so one sided. Star Wars is filled with characters who's only notable characteristic is domination and extermination. Thrawn is truly a breath of fresh air! I also think he would have handled the Vong better then the new republic simply by acting more decisively and attacking them at every opportunity rather than waiting for the "perfect" battle like the new republic did.
