I'm currently reading one of the Yuuzhan Vong war books (Star By Star), and one day bumped into a waiter at a St. Armands restaurant who noticed my book. He not only told me about a Star Wars museum run by the Yoda puppet creator in St. Martin, but also about how disappointed he was by how Disney turned down all these books, games, and "Legends" material just to do a bad remake of the original trilogy and pass it off as "sequels." I agreed with him, and I felt that the Yuuzhan Vong war could've made great movie magic instead of whatever we got in the end.

I agree with the sentiment, but I also think that a movie (or even a trilogy) just won't offer the real estate needed to cover the content in 19 books. If they tried to make the NJO into a movie, we'd end up with something like the movie adaptation of Ender's Game, which glossed over way too much of the original book's themes and thus ended up with a fun but also somewhat disappointing shell of the original. Better make it into a TV series, and adapt something like the Thrawn Trilogy, the X-wing series, or the Hand of Thrawn Duology into movies.

The Dark Nest Trilogy was the first Star Wars novels I read, then I went back to read NJO. It was a dark but fresh and unique take to Star Wars, where the stakes were high and the danger felt real. Even though there was some backlash to the death of fan-favourite characters. It could've been fleshed out more with comics and other media, Invasion was good but came out too late. I know some have issue with Troy Denning's direction, but he brought back Young Jedi characters back to the forefront; Lowbacca, Tenel Ka, Zekk and Raynar Thul.

What they could have done is make it into a 19 seasons show. And just go all out with it. But nope we ended up with Disney fan made films and saying “ we needed a bring back the magic of Star Wars and have a strong female character. “ - Disney

Hell, Rise of Skywalker is just a bad Dark Empire knockoff, Disney did two bad OT remakes as sequels and then did a knockoff of Dark Empire of all stories. If we got the fans instead of Disney who knows what we could have got for shows, movies, and games. Like imagine multiple trilogies each one focusing on a deferent part of the old EU, like one dedicated to Thrawn, a one-shot like Rogue One set in Shadows of the Empire, a mini-series of Kyle Katarn's story from Dark Forces one and two, a game based in the Yuuzhan Vong War in a similar style to Halo 3 ODST (I'm talking more about being from the perspective of a normal [for a relative definition given that The Rookie in that game is an ODST] person going against such a devastating enemy), or maybe a tv show set during the Old Republic era.

The fact that the fking Yuuzhan Vong were gonna be in the Clone Wars makes me more upset that Disney didn’t let Dave and George finish the show freely, in the way they wanted. But I can only say so much about that so I won’t tell anymore. For now, I’ll express my wish that Geetsly does more post-Battle of Endor-themed videos. Im actually really pissed that they were gonna put them in, the clone wars is already played favorite with in terms of getting good and detailed continuity, stealing one of the best aspects of the NJO/NR era is bullshit and would undermine one of the most significant parts of that era. Plus the whole reason why the vong worked in that era is because the galaxy was extremely weak and tired of war, the new republic and imperial remnant were finally at peace and the two were struggling to rebuild the galaxy from the devastation of the galactic civil war and it took those two plus other faction's to even stand a chance against the vong. If they invaded during any other period either old republic, clone wars or imperial era, they wouldn't win because of how powerful the faction's during those periods were, of the vong invaded during the clone wars as an example palpatine would just unite the CIS and republic against the vong and take control of the galaxy that way. If it was old republic, the old republic and sith empire would mop the floor with them.

Planets and moons crashing into each other, Luke blazing paths through Vong soldiers, Jacen's gradual corruption by the Dark Side, Abeloth invading the minds of the Padawans and Younglings at Shelter, Zonama Sekot, the possibilities are endless, it would be so awesome that anything that comes before would pale in comparison

To be fair, the Vong invasion wasn't an actual apocalypse, you had some planets being ravaged or terraformed, but aside from Serpindall (where Chewie died) and Coruscant's two moons fracturing and creating a ring it wasn't really "planets and moons crashing into each other" kind of thing. Argubly more celestial bodies were disintegrated during the Galactic civil war due to the use of numerous superweapons than during the Vong war. That being said, what actually happened was no less terryfying.

Thank you so so much for this. As someone who doesn't have access to most comics or even some of the games (KOTOR era, mainly), I depend on channels like yours for information regarding EU material quite often. I haven't really been able to find many videos explaining the events during the New Republic era of Legends, but this one in particular is very well made. It is not reliant on the assumption that anyone watching has access to the EU material, and thus remains easy to understand and enjoy. New sub for sure. That aside, the Yuuzhan Vong are really interesting to me. The concept of other factions in Star Wars (minus its leadership, the CIS for example) besides the Sith and the Jedi always makes the universe seem bigger, and I always wondered why people disliked their inclusion in Legends. If anyone has any insights into this, I would love to learn. also happy early new year :)

I came up with a story a while back, that could be a great way to re-canonize the vong. If the yuuzhan vong were to be brought into canon, disney could retcon the grysk into being a subspecies created by the yuuzhan vong. Like say while scouting the star wars galaxy, the yuuzhan vong create the grysk to help them travel deeper into the unknown regions and help gather resources for their eventual invasion, while traveling the grysk become fascinated by the technology they encounter in the star wars galaxy since they hadn't been part of yuuzhan vong society as long as their ancestors they saw mechanical technology differently, they saw it as means to evolve, but the yuuzhan vong wouldn't allow them to use it because it's blasphemy in their culture, this leads to the grysk resenting their creators, and eventually they spark a brief civil war with the main yuuzhan vong society eventually wining. The grysk after losing the war, retreat to other areas of the unknown regions to gather their strength and prepare to invade the main galaxy and take it for themselves and destroy their creators.

At the level of saga lore, the Yuuzhan Vong War is the most important event in all of galactic history. In general, the entire NJO series was written to be the end of SWEU. Personally, I would not have liked to see them in TCW, because the way they were going to present them would greatly contradict the version we already knew of them in NJO. The Yuuzhan Vong are good antagonists, but what I liked about their story was that they helped the Jedi discover a new way of looking at the force. In the OT and PT, we learn about the living and cosmic force, which are new bases to create a New Jedi Order, and in NJO this circle finally closes by introducing us to the Unifying Force, as a new perspective of the force that does not recognize the existence of the dark side and light side. This is something that many don't understand because they only see the Yuuzhan Vong as cool villains and nothing more. When in reality they are much more than that.

  • @emzonik8851

    @emzonik8851

I love the Vong but I definitely wouldn't elevate them THAT much. At the end of the day the EU was never meant to surpass the importance of the main saga, the GL saga, neither was NJO. It is still restoring balance to the Force by the Chosen One, that is to be recognised as the single key moment in all of galactic history. If not for that, the Empire would've crushed all of the remaining oposition and the dark side would've comsumed the Galaxy forever. Palpatine would've essentially win against the Force itself. The Vong on the other hand killed countless beings thrpughout their invasion but they could never actually win. The Galaxy was just too enormous for them and they would have been defeated sooner or later. They were only able to start their invasion when the Galaxy was already devastated and devided following the Galactic Civil War and the only reason they went with it was their blinding fanaticism. Even the horryfying death toll they've caused was less than 0,365% of the Galactic population, not a truly exsistential threat. What NJO is truly about however, is the new beginning for Luke's order and the post-ROTJ Galactic powers - learning from their previous mistakes, rebuilding and comming out stronger than befre, essentially solidifying what they had achived after beating the Emperor. It's also another way to look at the series' title. While the order had been around for over a decade before the Vong invaded, it was through that conflict that the New Jedi established themselves as the fundamental element of the future Galaxy. As for you're statement regarding the Unifying Force, I doubt thic couldn've stayed as the ultimate conclusion for the Jedi, at least the way it was described by Vergere, it does contradict George Lucas's idea behind the Force as clarified by master Yoda. Going by the latter reasoning, it was inevitable for Jacen to fall later on. It doesn't mean that the entire UF theory is wrong, just the parts that paint all of the Force as neutral.

Above all this video seems to highlight just how much contention there was (and still is) between all forms of Star Wars storytelling... seems like it's grown into something in which the fans, not the creators, determine what should be considered canon now (and of coarse every fan having their own unique spin on that topic). It may make the franchise less cohesive as a whole, but this is honestly probably for the best (as it puts us one step further from defining ourselves and others by narratives and one step closer to getting to know each other and ourselves more as people).

  • @Nuetral768

@@ashton3446 Thanks. It's the reason why so many people feel lonely, and why coming together doesn't seem to help much (but losing people hits so hard). If we are to turn our world around we will need to learn to accept and embrace within ourselves and others that we are not as characters bound by narratives but in fact writers of our own narratives. Happiness cannot come from trying to live what narratives other people have for us because this causes us to reject ourselves and therefore them by extension on very fundamental levels. True relationships are such that both people allow the other to live by their own narratives as they chose to write and edit them, and where both make the decision that they want to include each other in one another's narratives. The reason we try so hard to define ourselves and others as characters bound by our narratives is because we are afraid of being hurt, afraid our investments won't return what we've put into them. But when we neglect people to the extent that we choose narratives over true relationships with real whole people life tends to take more than it ever gives back... because we lose our place in our narratives as we start comparing ourselves and others to superficial displays of achievement as our own personal achievements are left unfulfilled and longing by our absence. Remember above all else that the greatest strength of man is our ability to make seemingly impossible things happen... all that is required is that we know what we want and focus all we are upon it. And that because of this strength we are bound by nothing more than ourselves. :)

As purely a psychological weapon of fear, the Death Star seems like a ludicrously expensive white elephant. You don't have to blow up a planet to make a point, a few Star Destroyers can make the surface uninhabitable and that's good enough. But if Palpy knew the Yuuzhan Vong were coming with those world ships, all of a sudden the Death Star makes perfect sense.

@@questionmaker5666 I agree, but the Eclipse is the 3rd generation of world killers, after decades of refinement. I would argue that they didn't know how to make it that small at first, nor did they know they would want to. For example, aircraft carriers made battleships obsolete, but until this was proven nobody knew it. Also you could argue that Tarkin was an idiot for taking the Death Star into battle without a support fleet, which I'm sure is how it was meant to operate because that's how the Imperial Navy (and real world navies) all operate. The Death Star is plenty mobile, just not maneuverable. Probably the best thing about the Eclipse Class is that you could make a bunch of them for the price of one Death Star, so now they can be in more than one place at a time and you have spares if you lose one.

Maybe if we're lucky this arc will be given a small reference in the Filoniverse when we eventually get to the phase where they fight the Vong's canon counterparts. After all, it wouldn't be the first time an unfinished Clone Wars arc was referenced thus solidifying at least some of it as canon in a story set after the Clone Wars. As in the Book of Boba Fett, Boba and Cad Bane give reference to their showdown in the unfinished Bounty Hunters arc, and the Bad Batch Season 1 had a small reference to it too, as it showed Cad Bane now wore a metal plate over his head in the spot where Boba shot him during the unfinished arc. Heck, given what's been shown in the Bad Batch season 2 trailers, it's possible will be getting a new version of that unfinished story where the Bad Batch were supposed to go to Kashyyyk and team up with Yoda and the Wookies as a precursor to the eventually Battle of Kashyyyk. Maybe, the Bad Batch will even be a part of the Canon Imperial age Battle of Kashyyyk shown in Legends that led to the subjugation of the planet by the Empire and hinted at in Canon by the state of Kashyyyk in Jedi Fallen Order.

While that is canonically true, it's also a retcon introduced in sourcebooks such as the New Essential Guide to Droids and The New Essential Chronology to connect various obscure elements to the larger saga by attributing them bigger roles in galactic history than originally intended. In the New Jedi Order novels (which arguably hold more weight since they're narrative sources), the destruction of the Yuuzhan Vong's galaxy is actually implied to be the Vong's own doing due to infighting amongst themselves for control of their galaxy after their victory over an as-of-then unnamed invading technological threat.

Do you think this "subversion" ended up working and giving the story the depth it needed? My resolution to the Legends plot inconsistencies to the new SW movie trilogy with Thrawn being kidnapped by the Purgill was to show where the Vongs were located in the Unknown Regions. The Vongs been hunting the Purgills like whalers and Ezra goes back in time to rescue Thrawn from the Vongs but was pursued all the way to somewhere like Mustafar. The Vong scouts end up encountering Palpy&Vader there and there's a fierce battle between the Imperial forces both on the ground and in orbit. The Vongs ships&troops were barely beaten with a lot of loss by the Imps' top of the line ships. The Imps learned that the Vongs can't be detected in the Force and how fierce fighters they are as well as their Biotechnology. The Imps shields&weapons are mostly useless against them due to the Dovin Basals. This gives Palpy the reason to mass produce the superlasers&build the secret fleet because there's Vong infiltrators already in the Imperial worlds and they're difficult to detect.

I'm currently playing a Star Wars Saga Edition campaign with some friends which is set in a timeline where Thrawn wins the Battle of Bilbringi and manages to restore the Galactic Empire. With the Empire restored, he proceeds to pre-emptively destroy the Dark Empire by torching Byss and purges the Empire of all the Dark Side Cultists and Palpatine loyalists and installs Palpatine's niece, his last surviving descendant, as Empress. Our campaign picks up some 15 years later, with the Yuuzhan Vong invading the Galaxy and now going toe to toe with the Galactic Empire. I've honestly come to really enjoy the Yuuzhan Vong as a Star Wars race. They presented a truly alien, existential threat to the Galaxy, one which forced the known Galaxy to come together to face them. Like the Reapers in Mass Effect or the Dominion in Star Trek. And they aren't just a bunch of mindless savages either. In our campaign, the Vong sent spies and infiltrators to sow chaos across the Galaxy. Supporting terrorist groups and fueling political crisises. At present, they have managed to cause a civil war in the New Republic by supporting an attempted coup by former Chief of State, Borsk Fey'la and even managed to cause a schism in the Jedi Order by playing on the anti-Empire greivances of the Order's members, causing a faction of Jedi led by Kyp Durron to break away and support Borsk Fey'la.

With the Sequel Trilogy apparently getting DELETED from ALL canons, thus possibly shifting it into a 'WHAT IF' timeline, there may be room for a new but good take on the 'Legacy' Era, or Post-Empire era, with Thrawn and maybe hinting at the Emperor being alive as a clone, like in Legends, but he doesn't appear like in Legends, and we isntead skip straight to the runner-up to the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. And if so, I hope they add a few more extra episodes to the Clone Wars era, like a bonus mini-season, where it more pays homage to Canderous Ordo's retelling of the 'asteroid that speeded away at ever increasing speed' - the Jedi, or maybe Separatists, are fighting, something crashes into the ground, both sides agree to a temporary truce so tehy can get out of there, find what crashed, and it just SPEEDS AWAY, with everyone just trying to figure out what it was. Then in the ending of this little arc, at that last episode, we see Palpatine classifying it as "TOP SECRET" or something, that the galaxy simply isn't ready for this - and we see him genuinely WORRIED. Zero sign of his Sith malice or being sure of himself, just him looking straight up AFRAID. THis would be a perfect opportunity to give us a GUARANTEE that the Yuuzhan Vong WILL invade. DAVE, JOE, if you're reading this, please consider it! Fans have been CRYING for this for YEARS! Make us happy, okay?

Well there were simple things to look at for comparisons. Only 1 planet gets destroyed in those previous era's but during the Vong invasion multiple planets are destroyed in their terraforming process.

@@mightheal Actually that's not entirely true. We knkw that during the Clone Wars multiple plenets were rendered uninhabitable via the use of bio and chemical weapons. During the galactic civil war, we know of at least 2 star systems being blown up + 2 planets, but given that the war was bigger and longer than the clone war, it's very liku that many more planets were ravaged. Add to this all the masaces commited by the Empire even before the war like the Camaas Firestorm. I am confident the Vong war killed more than the Clone War, but even if it was more intense than the GCW, it was more than 5 times shorter so here I wouldn't be so sure. The GCW's destruction had maybe smaller consequences cos it also had periods of relative stability and the New Republic had breaks long enough to further develop and rebuild.

Really close. Just near the western edge of the Outer Rim.

One of the coolest things about Vong's invasion was the fact that they prepared it for a long time, even fighting a sort of "cold war", or better a "espionage war" against Palpatine, who knows about the treath of Vong Empire. I remember, when i was reading Crimson Empire, my surprise and curiosity to see the mysterious Nom Anor (at that time, i don't know much about the Expanded Universe), and i searching informations on internet. I thinking that this entire operation was very cool, amd fitting for a new trilogy. Instead...we have received a wannabe sith and the return of Palpatine. Yuhuuuu.....😅

Now I’m hoping another fan adapts this arc into a Star Wars fan film or series.
