I personally found that connecting the story of Clancy and DEMA into different variables in my life has helped me. It’s like when Tyler said that the creation of Blurryface was so that he can look at all this insecurity and struggles as an actual thing to confront and have a seat at the table, I can do the same with my struggle and even inserting the story into relationships just so it’s easier to navigate. I always remind myself that the whole story, even though it’s fun to theorize and think off different outcomes to the story, is a representation/metaphor to mental health. It’s helped me a lot to get closer to God, even though Tyler has said that the story is supposed to be a world without God, I can still see Godly actions and examples through the character of Clancy. Thats just my thought about how I personally find ways to connect just like I did with Vessel and the older albums. Glad you’re back! Been watching you since way back. Praying all goes well for you and your family 🙏🏼💛

same for me. that's what i like about stories with metaphors and events that don't have a clear meaning or purpose. it's very self-insert in a way, and to me, that's one of the things that helps Overcompensate still feel like twenty one pilots. Tyler's writing has always been intended as a VESSEL for others to carry themselves in if/when needed. the Trench era is no different, it just takes the character creation, worldbuilding, and storytelling to another level. Trench does have a story that doesn't necessarily apply to everything, but it leaves itself open enough that there's still plenty of things it can apply to, and that's what i find beautiful about open-ended storytelling like this

I've listened to TOP in different seasons of my life, and interestingly, theatrics always speak to me in my hard moments. Sometimes a word hits a chord in my heart and soul that I never perceived in that exact way bc I hadn't yet experienced certain grief or joy. And I've found courage to work through my sorrows and insight to get me through difficult situations. Even SAI, it was perfectly timed in my life. We ministered at a church for 2 yrsor so in youth mikistry. and the pastor was unhappy with how quiet and private we were so they wanted us to change and profess that God called us to this church, or step-down. We chose to step down. If they couldn't see our love for the church, then they wouldnt ever after 2 or 3 yrs. It was such a deep anguish over the spiritual rejection that we experienced after 15 yrs of trying to enter the ministry without any offers, and putting our life on hold, and this 1 church that gave us a place to minister rejected us...well. It felt like a waste. I felt like a choker. I listened to that track and shy away so much to get through that anguish. Anyway i share this not to bash the church but to say that somehow the meanings change and speak to us as we grow and live.

I haven’t watched your video yet, cause I’m about to go to class, but I just wanted to share with you what I sent to my friends who are getting into TOP about you: “I just thought I should share this video with you (haven’t watched it yet), but I wanted to explain why this guy is so important to the TOP history and why he’s probably the reason I got so into TOP in the first place His name is the pop song professor, my brother knows who he is, but he’s basically an English professor who’s goal was to explains song lyrics to get people to be excited about english and writing and get them to think about messages artists are getting across This guy was basically the only person doing something like this around that time (he retired about 3 years ago). He covered Alot of TOP, along with some other bands, as well as just some writing stuff, but I believe he got a ton of people into trying to take lyrics seriously as well as probably started an entire generation of teens and young adults wanting to write He’s the reason I got so incredibly invested in TOP, as well as one of the reasons I started writing music in the first place. He kind of altered my entire perspective on music and I don’t think he realizes how much influence he actually had. Just thought you should know who this guy is He’s basically the elder clique haha”

I think one of the reasons this song is so intense or “all over the place” feeling as you said is because he is majorly “overcompensating” for SAI - being so upbeat and pop-y. It definitely also plays into the lore with the sirens, red/black, etc.

Loved your analysis. I agree with you about the Clancy storyline -- I find it academically fascinating, especially considering all the planning, lore, depth, and intricacy that goes into literally anything either Tyler or Josh do with this story. I think that it's a really cool that Tyler can conceptualize his mind as being a "map", as he put it once, that he can travel around and see where he's been and where he's going, and where to not go back to, and there are a lot of elements of the story, when considered as a metaphor as it was intended, that I relate to, and a lot of songs I really love. HOWEVER, like you said, it does take more effort to find these meanings, and it can be less comforting than simply hearing Tyler express a thought in a creative and yet direct manner, like he always did in Vessel (still my favourite album of all time). Hearing him scream "our brains are sick but that's okay" or verbalize the questions that arise when we're without any distractions takes away the isolation and loneliness that these fears and questions elicit. Sorry for the tangent lol -- I mostly just wanted to comment to say that I'm glad to see you back! I watched all of your videos for years, and you helped and inspired me to become a musician and songwriter -- I even got you to review some lyrics of mine a long time ago! I now have several singles released and an album on the way, and I definitely owe a lot of that growth and inspiration to you, so thank you! 💛 (by the way, I watched on normal speed, and that's impressive because I have ADHD and normally have all my videos sped up, but I always loved listening to your musings that it didn't even feel like thirty minutes at all)

This video meant a lot to me. When I was deep into the TOP fandom, your videos were a staple for me. Now I’ve grown up much like you, 4 kids, busy, no sleep, and this uncut, honest take on feeling a bit outside of the lore at this point because it’s harder to dedicate the time to research everything was something I could relate to. Musicians change, eras reach different audiences, and yeah…we’re growing up. Bit sad, but I wouldn’t trade my life for anything, I’m sure you would say the same, and I’m grateful for the core memories this fandom gave me when I needed it. Now, here’s to growing “older” together while the young-ins have their time. Cheers man.

I like how they have the lore, but there’s other songs mixed in to their discography. I’m just in awe of everything that comes out of Tyler’s brain, so it doesn’t have to relate to my life that much. I’m invested and excited that we’ll see a resolution. I’m anxious to see where they go with the next album once this is resolved. This first track was awesome to me. I was stoked to hear slightly heavier stuff again. You know that means I’m a trenchie. 😂 I get why the last album had to be lighter and it was truly scaled back as far as production. More piano-y. I enjoyed it but that “Welcome Back to Trench” just sent me over the top.

OH HECC HES BACK (for only this specifically of course) Editing as I go on 6:32 Dangerous Bend Symbol ☡ was used by the Bourbaki group to say a passage might be difficult to understand. I like how he worded "I fly by the dangerous bend symbol." Does that mean he ignores it, flying by at full speed, dangerously? Or that he's saying he's living by it, "flying by it" like a pilot "flies by instruments?" And if that instrument makes music, that sure tracks too. I think the answer may indeed be "yes." 7:20 I like the idea of rebirth here. Perhaps the bishops hijacked a religion about rebirth and made it about death? 8:30 "Half empty, half full, save half for your taxes, then overtake your former self." Taxes are gonna happen whether you're a pessimist or an optimist, perhaps it's something like "take what you can from both, and grow?" 15:00 It is very much an intro to a concert and an intro to an album rolled into one. As someone who wasn't able to go to any concerts in the SAI era, even though I caught the livestream, it felt like coming home. But then, what place did I just call home? 😉 16:12 I like how it's "maybe" overcompensate. Like he's not sure if he's overcompensating or not. back to 15:20 I would like to point out his little teleportation trick during the Bandito tour, in light of the last two videos, was not teleportation at all - it was seizing. 21:14 I really like how you said that. "Halfway ideas." There's something super interesting that I've noticed with these albums as they've gone on, and it was confirmed with "now that meteor is coming" and "on fumes i am running." I think by the end of Vessel, and into Blurryface, Tyler had sort of said what he needed to say for his own health. But there was a reason I really got into them in the late Blurryface and early Trench era. If his goal is helping as many people as possible to stay alive, then maybe he's taken an entirely different angle here to help a different group of people. I'm reminded of Clear. "I wish that I had two faces, to prove which theory works: yelling on the street corner, or cleverly masking your words." It seems in my own struggles, I respond to the latter variety more strongly than the first, despite connecting well to the former as well. Almost like "if that way didn't work, try this way." 21:30 you sound like him 23:40 YEP i am thinking of Clear so much right now 25:55 Always the goal. Another tool to help you stay alive. 26:32 As that person, who they said has been in his own world since far sooner than I created it all the way back in middle school, who used that world to survive some rough times, destroyed it, and recreated it anew myself, I wish I would've written this whole Blurryface story. It makes me want to actually write it all down, too... It's like Kitchen Sink. 26:54 no such luck buddy i broke this whole video down like i was sitting next to you lolol Final edit: Glad to hear you're doing well. One final thought about earlier... These last few albums have felt so much like Tyler's been watching me specifically. When red tape over icons became a thing I laughed because I've always had this little red scouter type thing on my icon... And yes. It's my own internal lore as to why, before I ever really listened to these nerds who like to rap fast with their lyrics so down. The number of times all this convoluted cryptic cacophony has led to "Tyler. Are you me. Are you watching me?" down to metaphors and even certain names being used. We might be coming to the same conclusion about all this, too. But we'll have to see. Stay alive frens |-/

Welcome back! I've missed your videos! I think the thing that makes me the most excited for Clancy and the continuation of the Dema story is the last Clancy letter from the Trench era. The way he talks about Dema and the internal struggle between knowing if he should really call it home and if he should feel comfort in it really speaks to my experience with depression. There are times I feel comfort staying in my depression. And it sometimes feels easier to stay in it than face trying to fight my way out of it. I've also used the line from The City "In time I will leave the city. For now I will stay alive" as a kind of mantra. I will feel better one day, but for now I'm just going to focus on staying alive.

I love this video glad to see ya back and I really appreciate the topic of the quality of music from twenty one pilots over the years I have few friends who aren’t in on it as I am and they all say scaled and icy is not a good album and blah blah blah and that the “lore” is really handicapping the lyrics I would like to throw my hat in the ring for this cause when you look back to no phun intended, self titled, regional at best and even vessel yes these are not “lore” albums or concept albums they still had this very strong theme of being stuck or held in one place and wanting to travel out or at the very least curious like in the song going down or march to the sea and taken by sleep then there’s this theme of a demon or voice or something that he always begs to stop torturing him like in the songs ode to sleep , anathema , glowing eyes and a car a torch a death I believe that it was only a matter of time. Tyler takes these thoughts and feelings and creativity mixed with maturity with his skill he turned it into a character and he gave it a face and name and a look and he was able to really get specific and detailed with this character and the back and forth with it and then when he gave the blurry face album to the fans he realized not everyone’s blurry face is the same were all going through similar but different things for the most part so he then made 9 of them named them bishops gave them a motive and a location so Tyler can tackle even more ideas with his thoughts and feelings because that world was always in his head and it was always in his music but now he was able to see it clearly and share it with us and he can get right to the point cause he gave us the language he’s speaking through the website and the other stuff and I personally think as twenty one pilots gets so famous they still want that Clique to feel intimate and personal he mentions that in message man and heathens and the best way to do that is to make a hard to follow hidden story that the fans who are really in it can sink there teeth into so at the end of the video you said you were excited to see a twenty one pilots without a Clancy I could debate that Clancy was always there from the first song Tyler ever made and I believe no matter what shape or form Clancy is going to be there in the future That’s just how Tyler sees the world, no matter if he refers to a car radio or a jumpsuit.

I truly do have a personal connection to Overcompensate as I currently understand it. As im in my low 20s, struggling with a lot of the Vessel and Trench negative themes. Clancy as an album is finding me at a really good time in my life. For me, in my past couple years, growing up, I've sort of had this personality flip to where I'm not cool with sitting back. I have been kind of taking charge and forming an ego, even if just as satire at first, so I can get my foot in the door at overcoming such themes. I'm not saying that's what tyler or Clancy is doing exactly, but it's seemingly the same effect.

So... the Lore is about the Skeleton Clique's mental health, getting away from being lonely and having suicidal ideation/actions. The Bishops and Dema and Clancy and Banditos and the Torchbearer are clearly metaphors for mental health and the need for comrodery.

I, too, appreciate the deeper lyrics that I can resonate with. I know that’s why tøp easily became my favorite back with rab/vessel. But I love all of their albums for what they are to me and that’s a beautiful thing. Glad you’re well and it’s nice to see a video from you again.

Heyyy, SO GOOD to see you again! Thanks so much for making this vid; the TØP fandom has not been as fun without your insightful analysis! I met you & your wife at the Taco Bell before one of the Trench shows in VA. So happy for you both with your new life & career in NV and your newly expanded family. Congrats! 🎉 Wanted to say that I kinda agree w/what you said about the Trench tour. I also saw the 2 legs of that tour and agree that the first one left me feeling a bit down, and that they ‘overcompensated’ for that w/some song adjustments in the 2nd leg. HOWEVER, I still prefer the first leg because it had ‘Leave the City’, which is one of my fav songs on Trench. It did indeed bring the energy down because it’s a very mellow song BUT to hear everyone there singing in unison ‘In time I will leave the City; for now I will stay Alive’ and to hear Tyler change the words from “their faces” to “YOUR faces” was one of the most connecting moments I’ve ever felt at a TØP show. 💞 In fact that YT video where someone compiled a bunch of shows/clikkies all singing that part, still makes me cry…beautiful. Anyway, welcome back! Hope you drop in for future Clancy analyses, time permitting! 👋

Ok I'm finished watching. Thanks for sharing really appreciate it. Super interesting because this is my new favorite TOP song (it's always been ode to sleep up until now and maybe I will go back to my OG favorite once the dust settles) and I am really emotionally connected to this song. Every time I listen to it I am so excited to see it live too. I also have kiddos and appreciate you putting into words how hard it can be to keep up with the details of the lore. And putting into words why Vessel is such an amazing album was super helpful. Back to Overcompensate. I've always felt really emotionally connected to Clancy and the Trench album because of my anxiety. So to see him on the video just confidently go into that room and act as a leader in the rebellion against the bishops with the torchbearer by his side was very emotional for me when reflecting back on the tracks Bandito and Leave the City specifically. I'm rambling but this is a really special song for me. Super excited for this tour! Thanks again for doing this video.

Oh my goodness! I’ve been watching you since right after Blurryface came out and you’ve helped me to relate even more than I already was to so many of their songs and helped me understand what Tyler was trying to say through some of the lyrics, especially the raps. I saw this video pop up on my timeline and I was like LET’S GO! I’m so glad to see you back and I’m so happy that this song was chosen for one of your last few videos. I’m also glad to hear that you and your family are doing well! I can’t wait to see what’s next for you personally and for this channel as it is winding down. I got I got into tøp about 7 months. I went to google to find the meaning of the music. I see all of these ideas of what people think the songs are about. I find yours to always have the most evidence. I have gotten to a point now that if I don't know the meaning of the song I find your blog post. I honestly think knowing the meaning of their music is so important because I can insert my own problems into it because I learn knowing the meaning is important because I relate to the actual meanings so much. It makes twenty one pilots mean so much more to me than when I don't know. Thanks for another song breakdown. This is great!

It's so good to see you back! ❤ My take on don't fall asleep on a boy who can fall asleep twice is this... We know he references his religious beliefs in his music. I think he's talking about Jesus with this line. Fall asleep being a euphemism for death. So don't die without believing in the one being who can die twice. I feel that you pick who you serve can also call back to this. Obviously, you pick between the bishops and the banditos. But it could also be choosing between God and the devil or good and evil.

Some things that stood out to me from Overcompensate are: --the themes about stepping into a leadership role like you said. It's a kind of confidence-boosting song for me, telling me to just move forward and make adjustments as I go. --I think the line "pick who you serve" is reminiscent of Hometown (and I'm not the first person to come up with that). Specifically the line "put away all the gods your father served today," so it's a kind of call to not bow to the bishops, not let them rule your life, and "overtake your former self," or be renewed. --Especially when you think of how Clancy is releasing nine years from Blurryface, and Tyler is stepping into this identity of hope and encouragement, overtaking the doubts he's faced. I just think it's really cool, and a great example of growth. Which, in my opinion, is also shown in how Tyler's wearing red tape in the music video. Because the person he seized was wearing red tape and was smeared, but Tyler still was able to use that image to inspire hope. I may be overthinking it though. --Also some people say the "dangerous bend symbol" could be the neon gravestone symbol, but idk what that would mean? It's great to see you again. Congrats on the kids. Send some of that motivation to work on things at the proper time my way, because I desperately need it 🤣. And thanks for everything.
