It's NOT the world that is sending thousands of under-trained young Russians to their deaths - it's Putin who is tearing the Russian nation apart.
This song is great. It sounds well in original Russian as well as in the English and Spanish versions I have listened to. Despite I do not speak nor understand Russian I like this version best however.

Maravillosa interpretacion. Muy bien.
Most people loved this song the year it came out, realizing that it had something "different" about it, but just put oit down to an interesting arrangement... Most never thought to compare it to traditional Russion (or Eastern European folk songs)...but one quick listen to the songs in "Fiddler on the Roof" would have given the game away. It was of Eastern-European origin, with those minor key riffs and harmonies. Great Tune!!

Henry Seidel, "... This is the original version of the song in Russian. ... " -- which is "some other language" than the later version in English, whose lyrics were written by Gene Raskin. Bassanio Broke's comment makes no claim about which preceded the other, as your response implies. Did you read more into his comment than he was saying?

@@ArcoZakus No, I did not. I just said it is actually the original version of a well known song. Most of 'western' people did not even know it came from Russia when Mary Hopkins was singing it.

Will someone please translate the original Russian lyrics? Otherwise, print them so I can translate for myself. The English lyrics---,no matter what language they are sung in---are wholly inappropriate for a woman to sing....assuming, of course, that the listener is remotely interested in what is being said.

This is just google translate, to give the remore idea... We rode in a troika with bells, And lights flashed in the distance. Oh, I wish I could follow you now, To dispel my soul from melancholy! Chorus: On the long road, the moon shining, Yes, with the song that flies into the distance, ringing, And with that old one guitar with the seven-strings, What tormented me so much at night! Yes, it turns out that we once sang, They burned in vain night after night. If we're done with the old, And so those nights passed away!

Yes, I have often wondered about the original lyrics. Just this snippet from Google Translate is enough to confirm how profoundly different the story is in Russian. This most romantic of people, the Russians, think in a quasi-symbolic quasi-metaphorical way that resembles the language of Wordsworth and certain French poets of the 20th century. The West has apparently lost this sensibility. In that lost universe the appeal is universal. However, although the imagery in the English version is peculiarly male the enormous popularity of the song sung by a woman, a popularity that clearly crosses all boundaries, including but by no means exclusively gender, shows the human experience is, broadly speaking, universal.
Once upon a time there was a tavern Where we used to raise a glass or two Remember how we laughed away the hours And dreamed of all the great things we would do Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la... Then the busy years went rushing by us We lost our starry notions on the way If by chance I'd see you in the tavern We'd smile at one another and we'd say Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose Those were the days, oh yes those were the days La la la la... Just tonight I stood before the tavern Nothing seemed the way it used to be In the glass I saw a strange reflection Was that lonely woman really me Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose Those were the days, oh yes those were the days La la la la... Through the door there came familiar laughter I saw your face and heard you call my name Oh my friend we're older but no wiser For in our hearts the dreams are still the same Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose Those were the days, oh yes those were the days La la la la...
