One of my favourite songs

Music is Universal, it does not matter who made it if it sounds good as this song does. I have read the original version is Russian but it really does not matter. After all Tschaikovsly was Russian and he composed among other things "Swan Lake" and "The nutcracker" we usually listen to in Christmas. The song was popular among Russian immigrants so that Jew most likely overheard it in a Russian restaurant. Anyway stealing is not a good thing.

@@bhojanrasikananda7794 Indeed many people don't know and believe Mary Hopkin's song is the original. I like both versions very much - the English and the Russian. The Russian original is a bit more sentimental telling the story of the long and winding way people go in their lifetime while sitting in a 'Troyka' (typically Russian three horse cart) with little bells ringing. English: Those were the days Russian: Dorogoy dlinnuju (The long way) But I think the basic emotions are the same.

I wouldn't really say so. Whoever belongs to the Slavic peoples, I think knew without fail that this is the rhythm.. besides, the song was written long before 1968.. It was written by Boris Fomin sometime in 1925... and it is a real Russian romance. Of course, with Paul's production in the west, it became a real world evergreen

@@rivaana8202 Completely agree with you, the tune can be identified as 'Slavic' by its basic minor sound. Typical for Russian sentimentalism. I liked Mary Hopkin's version, too, because it was obvious that she did it in a nice way for entertainment purposes. All in all: I like both versions the way they are. None of them is better or worse, but just 'different', simply made from different reasons and for different purposes.
