The mimics that can erase memories that sounds like the false Hydra
@O4C209

That was my thought... perhaps it's a mimic impersonating a false hydra.

The blackweald is mcdm’s version of a false hydra
I had an idea for a campaign I called 'Oops all Mimic' where the players (I was contemplating doing a solo runthrough on my channel) are things like a suit of armor, a dress Mannequin, a statue. And they become semi-heroic characters that want to help their people by trying to start a town of mimics where the mimic citizens are the shop owners and some of the buildings and workers. Not everyone of them is particular bright, and some are struggling to civilize.
I threw a mimic at my party. They adopted him. He is now a very happy member of the town and is the garbage man. I ended up adding the homebrew twist that he will only grow larger if he eats magic so they feed him cursed items in the hopes of growing him to become a bridge.

so did I. the CE necromancer ran away with it & decided to make an army of Undeads & Mimics.
I once made a mimic NPC who was business partners with the party’s patron. It has spent years stowing away on cargo ships learning the intricacies of trade before opening its own trading coster with the group patron. Always amusing to pay them for a job with a bag of gold covered in sticky drool.
Planescape had a mimic city, Nimicry. I think it was a floating island in the Abyss
3:25 Me: *looks suspiciously at my dog* "Nah. A mimic would make a better approximation of a dog"
We just took on a mimic that was shaped as a pile of gold from a dragon's hoard. There was a hoard there, but about half of it was a mimic :-)
I’m doing a pet mimic that’s always a door. It’s called Jim because it has a sign from a kids room saying JIM’s RoOm on it.
There’s a real fun use of mimics in Wild Beyond the Witchlight in a hag’s house.
ROFL, got me chuckling right away with the Transformers schtick.

Now I want to modify Jublix into a demon lord of mimics.
The Blackweald adventure looks very interesting,the main villans are mimics,great video!
Trappers are in 5th Edition! They appeared in Volo's Guide.

Someday I am going to throw a mimic tavern at my party. They try to open the door and find an open maw!
Best mimic I ever threw at a party... grand piano.
The main thing that distinguishes D&D mimics is the sticky part. That got lost in adaptation.
I ran a mimic colony once. It was a warehouse in a city, but also appeared as human assassins who were mysteriously identical. Not coalescing in one place Bd looking the same made kt hard to tell just how many kf these assassins there were. At some point the paladin decided to follow one of them back to their hideout, at which point they were inside a mimic colony. That was the first time the paladin died.
8:30 wait that's just a flasehydra?

The Mimic is the larval stage of a doppleganger...
Ed Greenwood looks like Elminster.
Hey Jorphdan, Have you heard of the second edition adventure Reverse Dungeon? it's really novel cuz the players play as the monster residents of a dungeon and must fight off increasingly stronger adventurers
@AnnoyingNewsletters

I love Reverse Dungeon. It was one of the last products before the switch to 3.0.
Good rhyme! Let me try... "A treasure chest and a DM frown, wonders unbound, A treasure chest and a DM smile, player ... they are both just mimics, they are all mimics, including the gold, the stones in the floor and the air."
2:20 There's the usual trick with the chain to determine if its a mimic, but there is also a way to disable it. While the mimic is inert, throw a Lyod's Talisman at one and it will open up and give you the loot it would usually drop. (at least in Dark Souls 2)
I had a mimic house for the party in my game. It was awesome!
I think I've had a 3rd party book that made mimics some ancient shapeshifting armor gone rogue, originally created so their aboleth masters can walk and breath on land. Which I thought was pretty cool, lots of hooks built in, many factions secretly tracking mimic sightings and hunting/protecting the original progenitor.
The eating of memories makes me think of the false hydra.
In my campaign the mimic was a toilet seat in an outhouse.
That Arcadia adventure sounds suspiciously like the False Hydra encounter idea
@Jorphdan

you are correct! Based on that, he mentions it in the adventure.

In my setting I like to play with the idea that changlings are descendents of mimics while doppelgangers are descendents of intelligent oozes. In practice they are very similar but it creates a space with a lot of nuance.
@AnnoyingNewsletters
Жыл бұрын
I'd strike that; reverse it, with changelings remaining as descendants of doppelgangers and mimics as descendants of oozes (or vice versa). Either awakened oozes became mimics, or less intelligent mimics became oozes.
Super strong recommend for the LitRPG novel series called “Everybody Loves Large Chests”, which features a Mimic as its main character. Specifically get the audio edition via Audible as the main narrator Jeff Hays (and the rest of performers in the later books) do an amazing job. Seriously, Jeff has the best voice for this crazy mimic main character “Boxxy T. Morningword”.
I was a bit disappointed that there aren't any mimics in Elden Ring. To me it feels like there's a void there, like something is off. Along with a boss that grants a weapon or other piece of equipment for cutting of the tail, I hope a future dlc will introduce some kind of mimic. And no, I don't count the Jars as mimics.
I used to consider Mimics to be immature Doppelgangers both aberrations, but I considered Changelings to be fey.
Maybe you could do mini doc's on individual monsters...5 minute shout outs from the monster manuals old school stuff \
Mimics are cups and plates, bowls. Lol the house is a mimic and the serving dishes are the children. The house acts as a nursery for a colony. Lol

*Laughs in Beauty and the Beast* They should be glad Belle broke the curse; otherwise, the entire castle 🏰 would have uprooted itself and devoured the town and all of its provincial life. 🎶
A mimic familiar can be a lot of fun
Now, imagine this a player that’s whole gear made up of mimics that follow the players command
I have been so scarred by mimics that, to this day, I still shoot every chest with an arrow first.
8:35 Sounds kinda like a false hydra by your explanation.
I do like my little mimic Griffith the mimic that somehow got the soul of a wizard he's been a little prick the party's been trying to kill him for a while
Love the video , thank you for the amazing work
Great video!
Imma still poke the vid with my sword.
thanks for the video
So... a giant mimic got together with a False Hydra?
What if a large enough mimic replicated a prison in a town? The town just assumed it was built and didn't really pay any mind to it. So when this prisoners in it every once in a while the mimic will eat the person and people just assume that the criminal broke out and got away. Now what made the mimics was a trickster god he thought it was funny to have a creature that can change himself. Surprise someone and then eat them. Thought it was a funny joke he has ever made
I like telling my players that there is one mimic in your adventure, but not telling them where it is...
How many mimics are too many mimics in a game I'm playing... 1 lol. I was a second edition player who had a lot of "DM vs Players" DM's and that continued through all my play to my 1st DM in 5e, after that, it was like every 3rd or 4th 1, new players just don't know the struggle, nor should they.

Is anybody else thinking that the wizards of the Coast are a bunch of Mimics! Especially with that contract they tried to pass?! The party rolls a 20 on perception we see wizards of the Coast as a Mimc!
