For maximum culture shock put each piece in a different game setting. Then have somebody make a character from each of the different settings and start the campaign in Sigil.

Ive been setting up for this for awhile while i try to get better about other settings than just forgetting realms. I really want to try and trick my players, who are only lvl 5 and 6 right now into accidentally releasing Miska instead of destroying him.

Or, if you run different campaigns on different settings, have players bring their favorite PCs. In 5e where games often end around levels 10-13 it makes good grand finale campaign.

I did exactly this in my last game. Spelljammer, FR, planescape...it was wild. The final battle let one person use the rod OR have the rod corrupted and each player get a corrupted part. Players chose the latter and each became a mini avatar of a different death god or goddess to stop an almost full power Vecna

The Queen of Chaos also created Demogorgon in one of his origin stories. He was her first creation, the very first tanari, but was considered a failure and was thrown away. She then created the other tanari that we now are familiar with and finally got the army she wanted. After the whole thing with Miska though, and the tanari's rebellion against the other obyriths, Demogorgon appeared out of no where and claimed the title of prince of demons, having grown so powerful over the centuries (or millennia or whatever) that he was able to beat down anyone in his path.

A piece of the rod shows up in the Age of Worms campaign path, too!

I hadn't heard of Miska until the Acq Inc playthrough of Strom Kings Thunder, so this information was really appreciated. Thank you.

I read most of this lore many year ago in Paizo's 3.5 adventure path The Age of Worms. Not only do you get fight a god made of worms but you also assemble this rod as part of it.

This is perfect man! I was just about to add her into my campaign and explain the shard of pure evil and stuff to the party!

There could be a whole campaign module just for this main goal of gathering the parts either in Greyhawk or FR or anywhere else.

I've actually been considering running a campaign where _Illmater_ is trying to free Mishka, under the logic that not even a demon like him deserves a fat like being locked away and deprived of all sensory input for billions of years. The twist ending will be that once Mishka is freed, he will be so thankful and overwhelmed with joy at finally being able to see, hear, and feel again that it transforms him into a celestial named Mishka the Peacock Spider.

I refuse to GM any campaign involving this artifact. The last time I did the climax was with the party at Mountains of Madness facing the Frankenstein Monster carrying the brain of Profesor Moriarty encased in a Mi-Go cylinder and armed with Stormbringer.

WOtC! You have a good 150 page adventure book just waiting to be made. ;)

If not because they do took their time in write the place that Obox-Ob had in that war, it would have been insanely interesting that he appeared, because it would have been a posibility that he help the players in order to obtain revenge against the queen of chaos by murdering Miska the Wolf Spider.

i've only ever heard of miska from lolth and that lolth killed him to gain the portfolio of spiders and the demonweb pits.

If I ran a campaign themed around the rod of law, I think I'd actually try to include a NPC representing the rod's original wielder, surviving due to an unexpected magical side effect of the rod connecting with Miska (probably would make the wielder either unaging, or someone that reincarnates whenever a piece of the rod is found or some such).

Branching off from this, if you haven't checked it out already, The Age of the Worm campaign from Dungeon Magazine begins with this very topic as the jumping off point for a massive campaign against the cult of Kyuss.

Many years ago we were playing the boxed adventure. We were at the caravanserai when my paladin was confronted by a ghost. He used Detect Evil, but found the ghost wasn't and so followed him. It was a trap and my paladin died. (A Medusa maybe?) I can't quote the text perfectly, but damn near it said of the ghost that it is, "... evil, but not evil enough to detect." Well... I wished I'd had a Detect BS power instead. As a group, we rebelled... called BS... and refused to finish.

As a Boros Monarch player, that thumbnail will give me nightmares.

Wasn't Obox-Ob the first prince of demons? In any case, it's hard to say. From what I understand, Demogorgon never fought Miska, and was lurking in the shadows deep in the Abyss while Miska and the Queen of Chaos waged their war, as Demogorgon was too weak to challange anyone at this point. It was only after Miska was already imprisoned that Demogorgon finally emerged from the shadows and claimed his throne, having grown so powerful over the centuries that none could stand in his way.

The Chaos Queen (Rod of Seven Parts in 7-part meter) 'fore the stars in ages old Chaos rose and did take hold. The hopes of men torn and bleak, Freedom from their foe did seek. The seven best, bold and bright, tasked to end the hated blight, sought to loose the demon's grip, defeat his queen, break his whip. To earth's ends they searched and found Seven parts to bring him down. The battle lost… then hero true on that day pierced evil through. Skies they fell, the rod - it split. Both were lost amid the pit. But with new hope, men bore down Chaos' hold, and broke her crown.

I heard they might be revisiting older campaigns for 6e, and the Rod of Seven Parts was included in that specifically. Miska will most likely make an appearance in 2025. We'll see!

I want to DM the Rod of Seven Parts in the Forgotten Realms too, after a module like Storm King's Thunder or Rime of Frostmaiden. What is the official level range for this adventure, and what was the level range of your group when you DM'ed it? Did they start it at level 12 and finished at level 20?

I started at 5 and we ended at 13 or 14 I believe.

There is so much more to this story, but i guess back in the second edition, the lore wasn't that deep yet
