Small faces were around far before Led Zeppelin was formed. In fact Robert Plant used to follow Small faces around from gig to gig picking up pointers from Steve Marriott's vocal style. If you haven't figured it out yet, you've already reacted to Steve Marriot twice. Black Coffee by Humble Pie, then Steve Marriot Five Long Years. This was his band before he left to join Humble Pie with Peter Frampton, Gerry Shirley and Greg Ridley.

"You Need Love" is a song with lyrics written by American blues musician Willie Dixon. The instrumentation was first recorded by slide guitarist Earl Hooker with backing musicians. Steve Marriott & Small Faces recorded this version before Zeppelin, but both are so awesome! thx for sharing Shawn & Mel!

Robert Plant was a HUGE fan of vocalist Steve Marriott of the Small Faces and Humble Pie fame. I believe you reacted to Humble Pie's Black Coffee featuring Steve. Led Zeppelin borrowed heavily from this song.

Yes, you know that voice. It belongs to the greatest (according to Plant, Daltry, Bowie and many others) soul/blues/rock singer Britain ever produced - Steve Marriott. Small Faces (1965-1968) were IMO the greatest of the British invasion groups, who unfortunately never came to the US, thus most of us here have never heard of them. After singer/guitarist Marriott quit the band on New Years night '68/69 to form Humble Pie, the remaining group joined with Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart to become the Faces. By the way, this was recorded in 1965 or '66. You reacted to Steve with Humble Pie singing "Black Coffee" and LOVED HIM. Also you reacted to Steve solo singing "Five Long Years" and LOVED HIM!!! Now for an unbelievably soulful performance Listen to "I Wonder" from Humble Pie and also "Help Me Through the Day", a solo performance by Steve Marriott. You will be blown away. "Tin Soldier" by Small Faces is another great performance. PLEASE MORE MARRIOTT !!!

The great Steve Marriott on vocals. The great small faces one of the best bands of the 60s and anytime. The wrote this but it was based on a song that Muddy waters did (i think it was Willie Dixon who wrote it for Muddy) but let' s face it most people take something off what went before. Led Zepplin did their version(whole lotta love) 3 years after the Small faces. Great record.

Robert Plant was a huge Small Faces fan and used to follow the band around. SF"s opened each of their live performances with this song, so that's where Robert heard it. When asked by a journalist if he was influenced by Steve Marriott, he replied "I wanted to f**king BE Steve Marriott! Steve acknowledged that this was done earlier by Muddy Waters, but he couldn't sing like Muddy, so he rearranged it to suit his singing voice and style. Robert did the same thing with "Whole Lotta Love". LZ got into trouble for not crediting the writer Willie Dixon.

The Small Faces were another great English band from the 60's. They had some great hits "Itchycoo Park", "Lazy Sunday", "All or Nothing", "Tin Soldier" & "Whatcha Gonna Do About It" etc. In 1969 after lead singer/guitarist Steve Marriott left the group to form Humble Pie" the remaining members of Small Faces Ian McLagan (keyboards), Ronnie Lane (bass guitar, vocals), and Kenney Jones (drums and percussion)-were joined by Ronnie Wood (guitar) & Rod Stewart (lead vocals), both from the Jeff Beck Group, and the new line-up was renamed "Faces".

Steve Marriott was the inspiration for Robert Plant who said at one point that he wanted "...to be Steve Marriott!" He started out singing on the London West End stage as the 'Artful Dodger' (perfect casting) in the 'Oliver' (Twist) musical as a child actor, fronted for the Small Faces (look at their group pictures and you will understand the name), and 'Humble Pie' before dying in a house fire aged 40!

This was 1966. Steve Marriot was 19 yrs old, singing this. Zep didn’t even exist yet. It was no secret Page wanted Steve for vocals. Steve’s manager was a thug, and threatened Page with physical harm. Page found Plant, and copied Steve. Butterfly effect tho… if Page had successfully hijacked Steve, Zep would have not had JH Bonham, as he came with Plant. Side note: When Mick Taylor left the Stones, Kieth Richard’s wanted Marriot to join the band. All but Jagger wanted him. Jagger did NOT want Marriot to steal his thunder. Woods was a much better fit, as he did not challenge Jagger and Richards egos.

If I could like it twice I would. That's not the only track that sounds like Zeppelin. You have to remember that in the 60s a lot of British bands were completely influenced by African American music. They were fully aware of the music and from where it came. They just put their own spin on it. Having access to modern recording techniques and the opportunity, I'm sure, helped. And then came Jimmy...

For more of Steve Marriott, please check out his teaming with Alexis Korner(UK's godfather of blues). Alexis was responsible for promoting our great US blues artists from the 50s/60s all through the UK and Europe. They performed an acapella version of June Carter Cash "Diamonds in the Rough" and a cover of The Rolling Stones "Get Off of My Cloud". Alexis' deep baritone gruff tone coupled with Steve's tenor soul vocals are quite moving.

"Who did it first?" That would be Muddy Waters! The Small Faces copied Muddy and Led Zeppelin copied The Small Faces. Neither credited the earlier versions. The success of "Whole Lotta Love" led Willie Dixon to sue Led Zeppelin (though I don't think he took any action against The Small Faces). It was settled out of court, with Willie Dixon also being given a writing credit on later releases. The Peter Green lineup of Fleetwood Mac also did an excellent version, which was more faithful to the original and, I believe, did credit Willie Dixon as the writer.
