Cool video! That's a solid setup you have there and it will last for a long time. I've had a similar setup in the past and loved it. I moved up to a 600hp LS3/S5 from the turbo Honda/2d....but I'll be honest, the fun factor doesn't go up as fast at the cost of maintenance. Just a couple tips to save ya some headache and money in the future. The Mendi 2D is a great transmission...you just have to know it's limitations. Try and shift gears while dunning when you can. If you stay in one gear too long, especially second, it will heat up and cause premature wear and failure. I put a trans temp gauge on mine and shifting really makes a difference...even just cruising around. 2nd gear is part of the mainshaft in the Mendi 2d and can get expensive to replace. Also...DO NOT use reverse for anything but moving it around on flat ground. Especially if you get stuck! It's a stock size VW gear and will break without much force. If you get stuck and it's not bad, shut the motor off, put it in reverse, let out the clutch and use the starter motor to get unstuck. If the starter motor won't do it...get the rope. Just about every 091, 002, 2D or 4E owner I know has broken reverse. They all use the same gear. Lastly...keep up on the CV maintenance. I do mine every summer...it will make them last a lot longer. Just pull them apart, inspect and re-grease them. And replace the boots every few years. It's a messy job but necessary. If you've never done CV's...go to outfrontmotorsports website. They have a detailed page that tells how to clock them correctly. I use a bucket of diesel fuel to de-grease them. I hope some of this helps you have a lot of fun filled, greasy hands free trips! Anyways...rock on bud and keep the rubber side down!👌 ~jw

Wow, great stuff. Thank you for the tips, especially about the trans. Watching the video back when I was editing, I did say to myself that I was in second too much. I’ll try and reach third a lot more often now. I just took everything apart back at home, cv’s, micro stubs are out, everything is apart and clean at the moment. Replacing some things, upgrading etc.. that’s what I was thinking, every summer I need to clean and re grease after this. That’s awesome that you had the same setup. And even better now with the LS3. You just can’t beat hearing that engine start up. Some day I’d love and LS car. Maybe I’ll swap down the road haha Congratulations though and thank you again. What gear oil have you stuck with by the way for the tranny?

I have the same SCU car just swapped out the turbo 3.2 Honda with an LS1, I agree with you about the fun factor. can’t replace the torque of an LS though lol i’m still running the 2D, can’t justify the new prices of an S4 quite yet, I rebuilt the 2D already before the swap, we’ll see how long it last.

  • @TheOffRoadAdventureChannel

What did the swap end up costing you? I’ve thought about going that route in the future. Seems like the 2D would probably hold up if you don’t beat on it, but I don’t know about the 930 Cv’s

  • @johnwest3001

@@TheOffRoadAdventureChannel I burned through a set of 930's every year. I did all the fab work myself. Just the parts was somewhere around 15K. Trans, clutch, cv's, axles, boots, hardware and materials. That's not taking in to account whatever you can get for the 2D. I have no idea what those are going for these days?
