I have a great question from a young quarterback. Jacob says, Hey, Coach, what should I be thinking about as I walk up to the line of scrimmage? You have to get your mind right in the position. You want to get into a good state while you're making decisions. You're relaxed. You're calm. And you're processing information quickly, let's set the scene. When you get the play in from the sideline, your coach may signal a play in or he may run the play in with the receiver, maybe yell it in. The first thing you want to do is you want to get a mental image of that play in your mind. What I tell young quarterbacks all the time is process it by thinking of what that play looks like, on paper. So I see it in black and white, just like it's drawn up in the playbook. This is what the play looks like. And then I start to run through the different variations of that play, versus different coverages. During the week, I prepare all week long. My last several years as a pro by visualizing each play against every coverage. We'll talk more about visualization in a different video. I
would start to run through all the possibilities of coverages of looks of different Blitz schemes, things that I knew I was going to see, by studying film. As you move on in your career in football and things get more sophisticated, you actually start to understand teams tendencies, what they like to do on down in distance, what they could do versus certain personnel groups from different hashes. And so you can start to process. Once I've done all that in my mind, and it should literally just take a couple seconds once you practice this routine enough, I come up to the line of scrimmage and make sure my formation is set. And then I get my read, what's my read, what am I seeing on defense? What do I understand the coverage to be what is the front all those things in my head prior to snapping the ball, then when you snap the ball immediately, you can make your reads and Key on the defender you're supposed to key. Getting a visual picture of that play design in your head, when you first get it, and processing that information gets you set to get a real Zen like state where now it's just a matter of making decisions processing what you're seeing, making your keys, and then making your throws.
Obviously, there's homework that goes along with being able to do that at the line of scrimmage. You need to understand your playbook. You need to understand your play concepts, and what your progressions are on those play concepts. You also need to have an idea of what your opposing defense is going to run are they cover 3 team are they cover 1 team, a cover 2 team? Are they a blitz pressure team? Knowing all that will allow you to be prepared mentally, the more mentally prepared you are for a game as a quarterback, the more comfortable you're going to feel and that's where you want to be. You want to be in that rhythm where you feel comfortable, you feel like you understand what defenses are doing. And you know that you're going to process quickly. If they do x, then I do y. It's a one or a zero. Like I said, you want to process like a computer.

Give me a thumbs up if you have an idea of what you should be thinking about when you hit the line of scrimmage because it's really important as a quarterback and give me any comments down below. I'd love to hear from you. Your thoughts on it? Tell me how you prepare for a game. And let's talk about I appreciate you watching today. Little quarterback training to help you get prepped at the line of scrimmage and getting that Zen state so you're comfortable throwing the football.

Can you give any tips how to feel less nervous while telling the play to the huddle for some reason I get nervous here but in actual play I’m good and execute it. Thanks in advance

On the first play you showed us it looks like the CB on the top of the screen is looking at the QB(zone) while the bottom CB seems to be locked into the receiver(man). Are there any ways a Quarterback can decipher between Cover 2 and Cover 2 Man when the defense does a pretty good job at disguising their coverage?

Great question. For 2 man I would look at eyes as you pointed out. I would also look at leverage. Are they up in bump? Are they inside or outside? LB's and Inside DB's tend to give it away more than corners. Corners in a traditional Cover 2 are going to press and force the inside release anyway.
