Fantasy Worldbuilding 101: How to Bring a Fictional World to Life

In this video, we discuss how to write a great fantasy novel through advice from some of the most well-known fantasy authors-particularly, George R. Martin and J.R.R. Tolkien.
Fantasy novel writers are responsible for taking readers on an unforgettable journey. Their pages must be filled with compelling characters and riveting plot twists. Their words must have the power to penetrate the heart. Their themes must strike a balance between good and evil.
When done correctly...readers feel like they are right there in the middle of adventure...alongside the characters.
First, we discuss Martin’s definition of fantasy. He is best known for his series of epic fantasy novels, A Song of Ice and Fire and is the inspiration behind HBO’s Game of Thrones series. He speaks of including tastes, touch, sounds and sights into the world you build.
Next, we go over how to create an in-depth sketch of the fictitious word. Adding these small details to your story will help your reader feel acquainted with the world you are building, especially if it is different than the real world.
Then, we go over questions that will help you pinpoint key details:
-What is your world’s history?
-What is its geography?
-Is the planet similar to Earth?
-Is there more than one sentient species?
-Does everyone speak the same language?
-Does magic exist in your world?

I do agree that it definitely helps to have a purpose and reason for something/somewhere/someone to exist, but when world-building I find sometimes you have to throw the towel in and stop finding reasons and meanings for absolutely everything, otherwise you’ll get trapped in answering those questions and never get around to writing the actual story! :)

I'd advise you to get an idea of the things in the world around your characters and their journey in your head or even on a separate paper but when you're writing the actual story focus fully on the plot and character and discover how these worldbuilding elements might intermingle or create obstacles in the way. Discover the world together with your characters, don't make it up during the writing itself.

The best way to do it is to just write. Write anything and everything you can for 15-30 minutes. In example, just last week I was in a writer's rut. I remembered haikus and on a whim I typed one up. Then another. Then another. Before I knew it I had a portion of a tribe's culture and history before me. Writing prompts and challenges (like writing in haikus) helps sift through the overflowing collection of thoughts and filter the ones you wish to hone-in on. Give it a try. See where it takes you.

I mostly write a lot of unfinished fan fiction and then the occasional original story. What I have learned when it comes to the two. Writing fan fiction: I have most of the characters and story already planned out and I can write in my characters relatively easy. Writing an original: I know bits and pieces, maybe the end, maybe the beginning, connecting the dots are hard, describing crap properly is hard, and a whole lot of unnecessary but I want it in the story anyways. This probably has nothing to do with the video but I wanted to share this anyway.

I'm just getting into world building, so don't take my advice as law. But I find it easy to make big things first, dragons and hydras and such. When it comes time to make the small things I do it by working backwards with why and how: how does this apex predator hunt? What kind of prey encourages that hunting method? Why would this culture have this ritual or settle in that spot? From there it just kind of transforms into a puzzle of sorts.

Writing a fan fiction is using pre-made characters, pre-made world, and usually a pre-made theme. Writing an original is writing everything from scratch. The characters, their personalities and their intra personal relationships don't yet exist. The world doesn't yet exist and doesn't yet have a fleshed out history.

Personally, I find it exceptionally easy to write fan fics. I already have the characters and world built. All that's left is that one plot hook, that one philosophical question, or that one "what if..." And the whole story falls together. Writing originals is actually something I really struggle with. Surprisingly what trips me up is the McGuffin. I can build elaborate worlds and characters and I know what I want them to do... By can't think of either what kicks off to go on the adventure or what drives them to keep going. But not always. At least once I've outlined an entire book in a weekend after expanding on a single "what if"

I guess it is similar with visual artworks. Creating a fan art means you can use references from the subject/original art. But making an original is a starting from the scratch thingy. It might look like fan fiction is easier, but both aren't easy anyways. It's just that original fiction needs more time and effort, but hey, an original work feels more rewarding because you know how much time and fatigue you offered into that creation.

What does your main character want more than anything in the world, and what pain is greater than the pain he thinks he will suffer by going after his desire? How can you push him towards that fantastic, poignant, consuming ending that inspired you to write the book in the first place, and what will make him see the error of his original idea in a dramatic burst of light dawning on his suffering soul? Who, if anyone, loves him so much that this revelation will destroy him for the sake of the main character (or, even more effective, how will his enemy come to love him enough to sacrifice for him)?

I did a meditation that took me on a journey into a fantasy world of imagination and more. I then decided I should create a story. Worldbuilding and writing a story can be hard so don't expect to get it on the first try. The first story is going to be bad but that's okay because you're just starting or maybe you know how to write but it's been a while. Your imagination is a barrier between fantasy and reality. Let your mind guide you on this long adventure. It's gonna start off hard and seems impossible but when you get it down, it will be easy. Don't say "I can't do this," or "This is gonna take some time" but say "I can do this!" And "This will be long but I need to be patient" novels take time so you'll need to be certain that you are ready to put yourself through a lot. Feel free to take breaks, grab a cup of coffee, relax, watch a movie, and then come back. As long as you go come back, you can do it! Believe I'm yourself and remember that it'll take some drafts. Thank you for being here, I am sorry for your time but believe in yourself before believing in failure.

One thing I’m doing for my fantasy world, is that I’m making my world young-about 700 years old. So, I can use plot points AS historical events, and it allows me to have lots of room for improvisation, for magical discoveries, discoveries of new creatures, etc! My whole fantasy series is a historical event too. My whole plan is to start off from the beginning of everything, and build and build and build from there. I find this method very fun :D

When it comes down to pacing your stories it can take a good amount of time with occupying the majority of the overall writing for the work. It is necessary though in order to not throw a ton of ideas on the reader, audience all at once and make them feel lost, or develop disinterest in the piece. It helps with further establishing the scenes, characters, and elements that you wish to incorporate into the story and make it enjoyable to the individual looking into. That, and it makes people gain a certain connection to a great amount of the aspects there in. I know that since I’ve been doing a bit of writing myself and have managed to publish two books, “Lost Case Encounters” and “Tales Of Alandria: Bridging Of Worlds”. Each time I devoted myself to writing out the scenes in each chapters for the books I always wanted to put great amount of meticulous detail into them to really flesh everything out for the readers, make them feel that the events are unfolding before their very eyes.

Those were great questions at the end! Funny that I think I already answered those regarding relationships with other powers in the area since that was the catalyst for the situation that's been boiling a while before the reader comes onto the scene in the first chapter! Kind of the inciting incident, as that can have already occurred before the book begins, catapulting the character into her dire situation, but in my case, this is just back story that's about to boil over into the inciting incident which begins to push her towards what should be her goal, after we learn what has begun to drive her after suffering a while in her unique circumstance.

One of the best things to do is for you to realise you shouldnt over conplicate things and have too many details because in the end they either wont matter but also, the reader will imagine the image you are trying to protray in their own way no matyer how much detail you add. And if you add too much detail, you will be restricting the readers imagination therefore making them not want to read :) sometimes less is more!

I’ve been thinking about writing a post-modern magic mayincatec war fantasy that is like dynasty warriors, Final Fantasy, and Lord of the Rings combined with native Mexican culture. As for the lord of the rings part, I’m saving that for a conflict against a power hungry warlord from Tytoland who uses dark magic users to conquer the world, tricking some of the world’s people into serving him, even those who were bloodthirsty to begin with. But right now, I’m busy with my interracial love stories.

(Edit: can you cut the BGM next time, or slide the volume down to bare minimum? The music gets distracting after a few minutes because it's repetitive (or maybe employ a longer track with varied movements, or a 10-minute playlist instead?). All in all, still a good episode, very helpful. More power!)

I would argue world building > character development. Both are important, but you need to make a world that's worth "fantasizing" about. Where it's somewhere you would want to live like middle earth and star wars or something so dark you it gets the reader, watcher, or player interested in the idea of whether they could survive it and learn to thrive in those worlds like Elden Ring or even The walking dead. After that is established, then the characters that make up the world should be applied.
