Why did written content die? It's a symptom of the death of the internet and particularly search engines, and it's mostly due to google. Search Engine Optimization has ruined not just the search results but also made the actual content of webpages much worse. It's almost all webpages with vague content, lots of ads and auto-playing videos designed to get as much ad revenue as possible. The internet has become a river full of shit you have to sift through to find the gold nugget that is whatever it is you're looking for. And Generative AI is the nail in the coffin.

@vulcanh254 I come from a competitive league of legends background, so I see plenty of people do super in-depth content for free over there. Yes, they are often content creators who do it to promote their brand so they can indirectly make money, but there are also complete nobodies who release guide with no financial benefit at all. As an example, just recently, someone released a 100+ page guide to a character in the game. As a reminder, there are 150+ characters in the game. Understandably, comparing anything to league is a bit unfair considering how popular league is. League is so popular there are bound to be a few people willing to "waste their time" making an indepth guide.

I agree with the volume of the memes being the problem. Occasional winks at the audience are cool with me when they're clever and/or subtle. But lately i really hate the level of goofiness. In combination with universes beyond i think this risks undermining the MTG universe. If no one takes the MTG lore seriously you risk losing a big chunk of the audience. Not to mention that the written story consistently really sucks.

To that point, when Ryan Spain was on LR last year talking about Vintage Cube, he floated the idea of completing the Horizon Canopy cycle on MTGO (specifically for Vintage Cube). So it sounds like it’s possible for them to create cards that don’t exist yet in Magic. I’m not sure whether the legal situation would be the same for them to create a UW card for a UB card that does already exist.

The biggest way to get people to care about competitive magic is to make it more accessible so 1) advertising it more and 2) make it cheaper for people to get into. The best way to start that is to make manabases cheaper. Now that Play Boosters have only 14 cars in a pack instead of fifteen, that 15th slot should be for manafixing and dual lands. That way players dont have to spend multiple hundreds just on a viable manabase or only play budget decks and mono coloured decks.

When it comes to the video/article topic, honestly most people are just really busy and don't have the time to sit down to read and fully ingests an in depth article. I'm busy working and doing chores, but I can listen to something while doing that. When I actually have time to sit down, I would rather play the game itself cause I only have limited time to play. I would LOVE to listen to more theory and how to get better, but I need to be able to LISTEN to it while I do other mindless things that I need to do. That way I can ingest that in-depth article content, and apply it to when I play. The best example I have of this is listening to Jim Davis' Bronze to Mythic series qhere he plays draft. I was mever a good limited player, but I started listening to his videos in the background and his explinantions, analysis, and advice was able to help me get a 7 win record in arena drafts. I think the best way to move forward is to just turn those written articles into video essays.

A worldsoul that thinks it's doing everyone a favour by bringing them back as zombies, because of all the cataclysmic events that keep occurring them was pretty cool. And places like Kaladesh, these are generally contained to actual places on their planes, whereas a lot of other sets are just hard to put into context. Karlov Manor, I have no idea wtf is going on as someone that likes learning the lore but doesn't read it. Who are these detective people!? These are not the same thing and should not be conflated. But your latest argument is a complete reversal of the original point and also defeats the actual purpose of the competitive scene. At first it was Competition -> Better Rules -> Better Casual. Now we're already at "casual exists without better rules, competition doesn't". And while that's probably true, it's a very poor defense of why anyone should care about competitive Magic.

Competitive and casual scenes benefit from each other. This is true of all competitive activities. The competitive scene creates spectacle and narrative, which increases engagement within and draws people in from without. It also codifies the 'meta'; that is, the strategies, tactics, and theories about the game that are not explicitly codified within the rules. Competitive players push boundaries of what is 'healthy' for their activity, and prompt changes to rules or designs by the ruling body of the activity; it is harder and/or slower for casual play to have such an effect. The casual scene is the entry point. It forms the large base of participants that legitimizes the activity as something that 'people do', and provides a huge potential source of revenue and funding in various ways, which stabilizes the activity (hopefully) at all levels. The casual scene is also not bound by the 'meta' of the competitive scene, which provides space for players who do not (or who elect not to) fit in the competitive scene, as well as allowing for greater creativity in terms of play actions and connections between ideas - usually to do 'silly' or otherwise non-competitive things, but every now and then finding things that shake up the competitive meta, that the competitive scene would not previously consider. I feel part of the pushback to Reids article - despite it being accurate for the most part - was that he did very little to recognize the symbiotic nature of competitive and casual play. I also very much agree that Wizards could do more to promote the competitive scene - but then so could various sponsors, and even community groups like yourselves if you decided there was benefit in it. The trick is to promote it in a way that appeals to the casual scene; more "hey this is cool, come watch" than "here's this thing that you should do because they do it and they're 'better'".

I was really hoping to see Lotus Field banned in Pioneer. Its not a huge metagame percentage or anything but the fact that you can't really interact with their mana is a huge problem imo. For example, the only way to stop Strict Proctor into Lotus Field is a counterspell. Yes, Krenko's Buzzcrusher now exists, if you're not on the play they've already gotten the value and can probably just counter it.

I have no real insight on it, but I wonder if one of the challenges in getting IPs into MTGO and Arena is about managing the rights over time. It’s fine if Wizards can only sell the Dogmeat pet for a few months, but what if you could only buy Fallout boosters for a limited time? What if anyone coming to the game in 2027 can’t add any of these cards to their collection and somehow Ezio is the core of a top-tier Explorer deck or something?

WotC/Hasbro’s management of Magic the past five years is the definition of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” They had a formula that generated a rabid core fanbase that maintained the game profitably for 30 years. Why the hell would they change that formula-and change it so drastically??

With Fallout not coming to MTGO or Arena it's probably because of the usage overlap for the copyright. A license to use a video game IP in a physical card game is very different to the license to use a video game IP in another video game. Particularly Bethesda probably has the rights to license out Fallout New Vegas as part of the Fallout IP to third parties provided it isn't as a video game as only Obsidian has those rights.

I for myself left MtG because I was playing Commander and just realized that I need to care and look after every Set for the Commanders I had built. Unlike if you just play Standard or Modern, there are Sets and products not for you, true, but now that everything is Commander, I was kinda softly forced into looking into every Set, every Precon, everything which had new cards that I could put in my Deck. And it burned me hard. Now I play Flesh and Blood and the Class system says that I do not need to care about every Set so hard, so I can just skip one to purchase.

Sometimes the best form of removal is "I have a big fuckin creature and you will die if you don't chump block". Adjust your deckbuilding to your playgroup. Everyone will have more fun that way.

Videos can be monetized more easily than articles. If the information is in text, it will end up in a search engine result or an AI chatbot output. This doesn't happen with videos (yet). It also makes the information presented more difficult to find. As Richard said, "watch this 45 minute video to get the four second answer to your question" is annoying as hell, but in a world where money is bar far the more important factor and everyone wants to hoard it, why would you put anything into easily copied text?

Could have been something along the lines of "if a permanent died or was put into exile this turn" or something, and it wasnt commit but witness, then not only would it be much fairer and more understandable but itd also work so synergistically with investigate! Create a clue token, sac a clue token, Hey! You just witnessed a crime! Get the ability you little scamp.

I personally feel that the idea of the best way to keep magic players is to make them play in the sunk cost fallacy is a real bad idea. Also considering the amount of commander decks casual players makes i think that the amount of money wizards make is not a problem. Moving to the topic of video vs written, as all things, it is a combination of multiple causes. Videos are more easily followed and can be used as podcast, so you can take in the info while driving or working. It is a passive way of acquiring information compared to an active way like reading an article. People have less time, so taking taking the time to read a 40 page article on how to play brainstorm is not that easy. Another element to consider is the casual vs competitive aspect. I never much cared for competitive magic, and i thought it was because i was a casual player. Recently a pauper league started near me, so i started play come competitive magic, and that made me actually start looking for articles and info on how to improve my plays. If there is no competitive scene because of wotc, why should people look for competitve articles?

Videos showing you what to do can explain way better than what an article can put in words. While written content will always have its place and be appreciated, its just harder to accurately explain or pick out innacuracies quickly vs watching someone do the thing for you. Plus, people still read, they just sift through the comments and find people asking the same questions as them. Anyway, calling people dumber just because they learn things differently *is* the stereotypical "kids these days" complaint. Reading and writing is not going away. Videos are not going away. Until there's a new way to consume content, it'll persist cause people who want to learn will find their way to learn.

Most articles have static images that can now be replaced with live examples. Take LR podcast, One thing they do is the "mock draft" Take can teach you LSV/Marshall's thought processes way better than any written content. It isn't that the downfall of written content mean people still don't want the depth, it's how we consume the "deep" content has changed.
