THIS over TUDOR Chrono! Lorier Gemini 'Panda' Chronograph Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A review of my Lorier Gemini Panda Chronograph. I bought this watch earlier this year and it's been in a regular rotation for the last 4 months. In my opinion this watch looks and wears better than Tudor Black Bay Chronograph. Enjoy the review:)

I have a couple of Loriers and although I love sapphire, I feel there is definitely room for hesalite crystals especially when you are making such an effort to be period correct. So much warmer and way less smudgy. Actually more resistant to breaking than sapphire, but obviously more prone to scratching. But, POLYWATCH (which Lorier is now including with new orders). If you enjoy the connection that daily winding provides, ocassionally caring for the crystal is a great way to foster that connection as well. I certainly wouldn’t want nothing but acrylics, but there is definitely a place for it, IMO. Great video.

I 100% agree with the drilled lug statement. I own a vintage Tudor with drilled lugs ( only on the left side) and it's such a luxery, most of my premium leather traps don't have quick release springbars so can be a horror to remove

Lorier has been doing just about everything right lately. Fantastic vintage- esque feel, fantastic proportions, beautiful build quality and great price makes them far more easily accessible than Tudor/Rolex. I absolutely LOVE the Tudor Chrono and am currently shopping for one, but this is a great option and you don't have to worry about someone trying to break your wrist to get at it. I am not bothered by the Hesalite especially on a more vintage feeling piece. Great video, keep up the great work.

I have a Neptune 3 and I have no issues with acrylic at all. I have so many watches with sapphire, it’s nice to have something different. I don’t treat my watches roughly, so I polish out any small scratches every couple months and it’s good as new.

Hi Oleg, a good review of a lovely watch, & a very well made model! I bought the Neptune some 2 years ago & it’s a favourite in my vast collection. I’ve looked at this model many times but other watches have blocked it’s path!🤣 I’d still definitely stick with the hesalite crystal! Definitely a consideration nonetheless!👍🏼🇦🇺

Hello and happy Friday from Chicago! I’ve had my eye on Lorier for a while now and think their watches aesthetically are very pleasing. I agree with you on that a sapphire crystal would be nice but for the price point still not bad. A matching blue seconds hand to match the blue “Gemini” would really make the dial pop. I really like the Hyperion GMT and have come close a few times to pulling the trigger and buying but haven’t. TGV’s collaboration Safari with the copper/salmon dial is amazing but I wish they offered in a bigger size (39mm) along with the 36mm option. I’m definitely going to pick one up for myself this year. Lorier for a small micro brand and price I fell they are step above a lot of the others houses/brand. Great review and stay warm!!

You've sold me on this piece Oleg. I've been interested in Lorier for a while too, both the Gemini and the Hyperion. I was a little worried about the size though cos I have an 8" wrist. I love 39mm sports watches, but generally prefer anything with a tool bezel to be ~ 41mm. But I have a 38mm Merker Panda with a black border at the dial edge (which shrinks the dial visually), and that wears a bit small but it works. So that means the Lorier should wear well, so I'll buy the Gemini and sell the Merkur. I love the ST19 too, and pretty much buy everything that uses it (as long as I like the watch). Thanks for helping me make up my mind!

Great review. Quite agree on almost every points here. 👍 I also had a crush on this watch and bought right away (with the Lorier Falcon too). Very nice and clean design. Perfect size for my small wrist. Robust movement known for doing the job properly. Very nice bracelet too. Very comfortable with a feeling of robustness. And the watch is a strap monster anyaway: love it on a brown leather vintage racing strap. 😎 I also love the 12h bezel that is supposed to be used for the hours of the stopwatch, but I also use it as a second timezone. 😉 Well designed: thin, clean and small arabic. Very subtle. 👌 It’s a hit for me, specially for the price. Looks way more expensive than it is. If I have to be picky on this timepiece, I feel like the ’2D’ hands looks a bit cheap here compare to the overall design. And IMHO the bracelet is very nice for a micro-brand, but the edges are a bit too shap and I would love a chanfer on each side like on the case.

I really like my Lorier Falcon 2. I tested it for a week, wearing it during the day & leaving it face-up in my watch box at night. At the end of the week, it was -5 sec! I also really like the way the acrylic crystal looks (but I confess I’ve never had a box sapphire).

I've had both the Tudor BB 56 as well as the chronograph on wrist and I have to agree with you that this is a better option all around. Price point, looks and quality are on par with Tudor and 1/4 of the price.

Tudor needs to make the GMT and Chrono in the BB58 dimensions. The popularity of the BB58 is largely due to its size being perfect for so many wrists. I’m sure Tudor sees this since they made the original Black Bay smaller into the BB58. That original Black Bay was similar size as the GMT and Chrono so I wouldn’t be surprised to see those watches getting the same treatment in the future. If they do, I’d 100% buy the GMT immediately.

This my favorite modern panda chronograph design next to the Zenith Chronomaster Originals that came out in 2021. I also think it’s Lorier’s best watch. The proportions and legibility are fantastic, and there are no extraneous details to clutter things up. The acrylic crystal adds interesting distortion and tends to limit glare and smudges, which I’m happy with as a tradeoff vs sapphire. Overall, this is an amazing watch and for $500 it has satisfied my desire for a panda Chronograph, while keeping me uninterested in most of the modern panda dials out there.

I've eyed up the Lorier collection at various points, but it seems like all their watches have hesalite crystals? I'm like you - I'd prefer the option of sapphire instead. I've tried getting scratches out of the resin crystal of my F91W with Polywatch, but that stuff doesn't work miracles. I'd be bummed to spend hundreds of dollars on a watch and not have the option of sapphire.

Wow... I agree with you all you said. THAT watch looks exceptionally great, especially the dial is super clean and classy. for me, I rather have the "light blue" text on the dial to "deep red" (like your Bond with a Seamaster hoodie, ha ha") along with same deep red color second hand. That would be awesome. I also prefer Sapphire over Hesalite, of course. As for the clasp, yes, it really need some improvement. Something unique and adjustable style (like Glide lock or some sort which a lot of companies are going with...) thanks for the review, Oleg! BTW, where is Bond? Great review. I agree with your comments, and I really like this Lorier, however I'm not a fan of the Seagull ST19. I have this movement in a Seagull 1963, and although it works, the winding action is very very hard... the crown is incredibly hard to turn, not sure why. Once wond the watch seems to work fine however. I'm just concerned as this movement seems to work for the most part, but reliability is questionable. I know this may sound crazy, but I almost forfeit the mechanical benefits of this movement including manual winding and chrono pushers action for the unbelievable reliability of a Japanese meca-quartz. Thank you again for your fantastic review and input. Cheers.

I do like Lorier an awful lot ever since the Neptune and it’s updated versions. Still contemplating buying one but importing one into the UK always costs more so may look for a pre-owned Neptune. Anyway I digress from this one, and I love it too, the dial is just lovely and clean and it been manual wind will help a lot with the thickness of the case (keeping it slim). On the Hesalite V Sapphire battle I’m a little on the fence although in truth I think that what put me off the Neptune. Perhaps a box sapphire is the answer but the cost would soar. In truth I just want to touch and feel one before committing, always almost impossible with a microbrand unfortunately. 🤷‍♂️

Obviously, they factored in that by using hesalite that would make them stand apart but didn't care about courting potential customers with sapphire crystal ( they don't want you or me - unless they want more profit(?)). Good luck to them ( at least the bracelet looks comfortable & there's drilled lugs - on all watches , please except dress pieces ).

At this price point, it should have sapphire crystals, front and back. Mechanical movements should be seen! And I've had 2 of these movements that have failed, a real hassle. Another mechanical movement needs to be used, even if it's a segal. The 19 movement is unacceptable for me after 2 failures. But with these current features, it's unacceptable and too expensive. If these issues ever get addressed, I would gladly buy the watch, even at $499.

I've never felt the supposed visual quality difference of acrylic was enough to use it over a sapphire crystal. Honestly, the difference is negligible to none to my eyes. I'd take sapphire over acrylic always if given the choice. For me, the hype for using acrylic over sapphire to give a more vintage vibe is totally overrated. And, no, I've never had sapphire crystal crack if the impact resistance is supposedly better for acrylic. In fact, acrylic has cracked on me before. Sapphire never and of course it also never scratches. Oh, I do prefer an st1901 movement over a mecha-quartz. I can't stand the usual mecha-quartz movement that utilitizes the useless 24-hr sub dial. That's the main thing that bugs me these days about that movement. It's such a filler feature that is basically useless just to fill out and complete a "chronograph look", but essentially offers no chronograph related feature nor does it do anything for normal time reading. I know if it's night or day with my eyes, it can't be independently set for a 2nd time zone, and I know how to translate 12-hr to 24-hr equivalent in my head already. The Lorier is nice looking, but it's not exactly the same aesthetic design as a bb58 panda chrono. And, it's not meant to be. For $1000s less.. in fact half of $1000, it's a very good buy for the style of chronograph it is.
