I agree with you 100%! If you're a pro - listening thru headphones ... this mic isn't for you. But as the family video/photo guy, it's Perfect for me! A Massive improvement over the onboard mic. The automatic control is hassle free, and the polar pattern is fantastic! B&H now sells the g1 for $120 USD. Oh yeah, Love the size.

Hey Matt - great review - I did buy this mic even after watching this. I appreciate your honest review of this and I understand not being able to adjust the volume - what I am curious about is you mention that if you need to use this for a paid gig of some sort - and it got me thinking - do you ever use on camera mics - like rode video NTG - on the camera as PRO audio? I would think 99% of the time the mic on top is just a scratch mic - in which case using this would be fine for that. You are usually mic'ing the bride and groom, and/or running audio from the sound at receptions - even on interviews and what not - you would boom a mic or use a lav - When do you use the on camera mic as PRO audio?

Thanks, Matt, good vid. Are you planning on trying the ECM-B10 at $249? I got one in a kit from B&H and haven't used it much at all but would be curious what a pro thinks about it especially compared to the even pricier options.

Unusual question - would it be possible to use this for desktop mic? Perhaps mounted on top of a monitor? The compact size would make a really nice for a minimal zoom / teams mic.

looks like you get better voice quality straight out of the camera isn't it?? Big difference that this will give you a noise reduction so its better on the outside on the wind vs build in mic... What do you think?

ECM-B1M is the best of the bunch. But for the small ZV models B1M may seem too big. I am intrigued to get a G1 simply due to its cute form factor.

The noise floor is definitely too high for the price. But I would always assume that you would need to add some low end eq. Although super cardioids have a stronger proximity effect they are always going to fall of from more than a foot away. Small shotgun camera mics get a bit more reach but again always need a little eq to get that sweet spot. One thing I’ve notice most reviewers fail to mention about this range of on camera mics, is just how bad the built in shock mounts are they fine for ninja level ground walking but as soon as you walk normal they pick up all sorts of bumps compared to rode, diety etc.

Hey Matt! There has to be a faster way to unload SD cards right? I have a wedding film company and we do anywhere between 1-5 weddings a weekend. I spend hours and hours dumping footage every week. I used to have a doc that allowed me to plug in 3-4 cards at one time and it stopped working. They discontinued it. Please, what is the fastest way to dump multiple cards. Literally right now I am dumping 14 full cards and it is taking forever!

I just bought this microphone and I don't like the quality but I noticed it has a great frequency range and is very sensitive. I plan to modify it and flatten out the tones at the 4k frequency which is amplified by the body they placed it in. By flattening out the frequency it will help raise the low end. Cameras also do a bit of internal processing clipping the low end and very high frequencies. All this microphone needs is slight modifications and it will be good or great enough to keep. Sony did a good job but better quality sound can be extracted.

According to Sony Hong Kong technical support department when the a7c2 connects to the ecm-g1 microphone, it can only use analog input. If you use a7c2 with other higher-end microphones, you can use digital input or analog input. So when g1 connect to a7c2, there is no fully automatic audio leveling function. However, on other Sony camera models such as the a74, the camera can continue to use digital input and use the fully automatic volume leveling function. Regarding this issue, I sent three emails to Sony's technical support department in Hong Kong, China and Japan. Reflecting my dissatisfaction, why do the same microphone have different reactions in different camera models. I use the a7c2, a relatively entry-level camera, because I hope that using an entry-level microphone, I can adjust the volume completely automatically, without having to spend time manually adjusting the volume.

I Fixed Mine for 10$ This mic is so convenient to use you just put it on and forget about it. but its sound quality is horrible i cant believe sony would release such a bad sounding mic. what i did is i bought a dirt cheap used rode video mic me with 3.5mm jack that no one uses anymore since no more mobile phones come with a 3.5mm input jacks and i simply replaced the capsule of the sony with the rode capsule you just need to remove the front grill to get to the sony capsule and replace it with rode. the difference is day and night. of course the rode is not a high quality mic but its way way better than the capsule in the Sony G1. plus you can always go for an even better capsule than the rode. thank you i hope this helps

Sennheiser makes a version of these (MKE 200). But even that one is not as good as the slightly larger 400 MKE. I actually have a cheap Boya/rode mini clone and it seems to work just fine. But you might want to look into the Sennheisers.

Tbh…im astonished how good the a7s3 internal mics sound…but this looks interesting. The past sony mics suffered from terrible wobble-clicks (deep muffled sounds like underwatersounds whenever you moved the mic)…how is this dampened?

Yeah if you want built in Sony mics of any quality, you have to pony up. Their cheap options are so bad for pro use that I’d rather stick with the Rode Videomic Go 2 or something else at that budget level. Yes, it’s less convenient, but the audio will be better in every way.

The B1M is "junk". It has the (sound&practicality)potential to be 10/10 but the noise it makes while bumping into itself makes it impossible to use... I read about it but really it was just unusable. Unless of course you go really easy and/or don't move at all. Then its awesome.
