Why I sold my Blackmagic 6K G2 & Sony FX30 for the Sony A7IV

Фильм және анимация

I talk about the reasons I sold my Blackmagic 6k G2 and FX30 for the Sony A7IV…again. This was for sure a very tough decision but maybe my reasons will resonate with some of you (and maybe they won’t). Either way, you have to do what works for you and your current situation.

    The rabbit hole of gear reviews makes you feel like you need more than you actually do. For me personally, I shoot on an 8-bit camera and I am happy with the image quality. I sometimes think "what if I had 10-bit, " but then I shoot videos for clients, pull it up on my editor and I am always blown away by how beautiful the images still are.

    That is a very true statement! I shot with apsc 8 bit cameras for years (a6500 and a6400) both very capable cameras with beautiful image quality. The only plus side to 10 bit is if you intend on heavily color grading. I definitely recommend using what you have until you've outgrown that camera and/or your needs change, but keep in mind you can always rent gear if needed for client projects. :)

    had an arguement with my friend about this. Used an a7IV for 2 years and thought it was an amazing one and done camera. You could pick it up and start shooting with it easily and you could rig it out and get the best out if it. These cameras really let you focus on story telling and whats actually important in a film. The only valid arguement for people who think gear matters is if it makes your life more convinient and increases efficiency and saves time. Having complicated gear for no reason and image quality alone is always never a smart move unless you have a team of 20 people behind you.

    Gotta get the gear you need for the stuff you need to make. I feel like I maxed out what my Canon M50 can do photograph wise (Video wise it is decent (4K quality) if you're managing the camera, but if you want to be in front of the camera, anything you make is no good), so I recently bought the FX30 - to give me more headroom as I slowly build the kit I want for it.

    Thank god he's done talking! I'm still in a position of a newbie, shooting stuff with a6400 but I want to do more and more, but be able to shoot photos and videos, preferrably with the same camera. In your experience is it better to go with A7IV or FX30? My guts are telling me that A7IV should be my go to, but I also think of A7C II or even Canon R6 Mark 2. I'm shooting mostly handheld, so anything with IBIS would be better than only in-lens stabilization, but yea... Struggles of a guy who's still learning things :)

  • @GabrielJThomas

    🤣You have to start somewhere and the a6400 is still a very capable camera! Matter of fact, I owned one for awhile myself and really enjoyed using it. In regards to choosing the A7IV or the FX30. The A7IV would be much better as a hybrid camera for sure. Also consider what echo system you've already invested in. Do you own several Sony lenses? If so, I'd stay in that system instead of switching to Canon. Overall, I'd say choosing between the A7IV and the A7C II would be a great choice. Each camera will have slight differences. If Autofocus is top of your list then the A7C II may have a slight edge with the new AI processor, however, the A7IV still has incredible autofocus when needed.

    @@GabrielJThomas Thanks! I really appreciate your answer :) Actually I haven't yet invested much in Sony (I bought additional prime lens to the kit one and that's it), so the switch wouldn't hurt. Overall I like Sony but the lack of updates to its cameras' firmware is something that worries me, as I don't want to invest in tech that will become outdated quickly. Anyway, I have something to think about and your input won't be forgotten :)

    I also wish it had uncropped 4k60p. It sucks that the only way to combat that is having wider lenses to achieve a certain focal length. So what is your setup now with Sony a7iv? Lens? External monitor? Cage? Mic? What specs are required for editing footage from the camera? Have you done any documentarirs or films?

  • @GabrielJThomas

    @GabrielJThomas

    Ай бұрын

    Now I primarily use the Sony A7IV withe Sigma 24-70 F2.8 Art II and the Sigma 35mm f1.4. I always have a cage and top handle attached. When I have longer shoots I add the OSEE T7 7" monitor, Sennheiser MKE600 Shotgun mic, Small rig baseplate and 15mm rods + a V mount battery to power everything. I do have other lenses but I really wanted simplicity at this point so the 24-70 stays on most of the time. As far as specs go, I've been editing on an iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017 model and Premiere Pro for editing. Premiere Pro has its issues, but I've been using it for what feels like forever. I haven't shot a documentary or film but have worked on several sets. Currently I work full-time for a local church so most of my work is related to that. Productions, testimonials, occasional music videos, etc..However, I really want to get into commercial filmmaking and documentary work so I joined AOD.

    Thank you so much for this video it’s been very useful to me! At the moment I’m debating between the SONY IV and the SONY FX30. I think my only concern with the fx30 is obviously it’s not full frame but then I’ve heard with the Sony IV it’s known for overheating but I guess it just depends. I’m wanting a camera to document my travels and tell stories in a cinematic but effective way. I also do photography and know the Sony IV is great for that too. What would you say is the best camera in this situation? Thank you so much

  • @GabrielJThomas

    @GabrielJThomas

    Ай бұрын

    Hey, glad it helped a little. I've never had an issue with overheating on the A7IV and I've ran the camera for long periods of time. If you do photos then I'd say the A7IV has you covered for both. There are so many options now so I'd say considering your needs, a solid hybrid camera would be best. I loved filming with the FX30 when I had it, but it just didnt work very well in low light. The A7IV just happens to work for me cause it still delivers the image quality newer cameras have. So I'd recommend looking at cameras in the price range you are considering and weigh the pros and cons of each. If autofocus is a deciding factor then you may want to look at the A7C II, but the Sony A7IV's autofocus is still incredible it just doesnt have the latest AI processor.
