Remember, Hatsune Miku/Vocaloid wasn't trying to be anything more than vocal demo software. It's the people that made her what she is. You can't manufacture that kind of support. If we ignore it, it will go away.

The thing about Hatsune Miku compared to Polar too is that Miku's rise was 100% grassroots. Sure, she was created by a multimillion-dollar corporation as a voicebank for a vocal synthesizer program made by Yamaha, but she was originally created as just a mascot for that product. Crypton Future Media's intent was for Miku to voice other characters in songs; not for Miku herself to be depicted as the one to be singing. Yet the community that formed on Nico Nico Douga back in 2007 depicted her as the singer almost universally, and through that they changed Miku from mascot to idol. Polar? Five Minute Crafts controls everything about her. That makes her feel _far_ more inauthentic to me. Miku's most iconic songs, despite her being basically a J-pop idol, have bite and substance to them - because they were made away from the prying eyes of the record label industry. And as long as Miku and Vocaloid software are sold to anyone regardless of whether they're with a label or not, new hit songs will always emerge from the indie scene, and new Vocaloid artists will always emerge. Meanwhile, since Five Minute Crafts is the only entity in charge of her production process, Polar's music feels safe and sanitized by comparison, like any other idol music.

The big thing about vocaloid is Most of the producers write about their own feelings. Miku, and other Vocaloids, give them the voice to create with. So the songs are usually truly authentic. It's one thing that'll make me never move on from Vocaloid genre

I think the worst part is that they make it seem like she's the first virtual idol to exist, but her design is boring. Miku's design is simple but recognisable and she can morph into different Miku's for different producers and still be recognizable. Polar just looks like a bad e-girl lol

4:31 Pros of polar: - nothing - has a KZread channel? - has a Tiktok? Pros of Hatsune Miku: - everyone can buy a license to use her voicebank(P.S. I know that she might not be affordable for everyone, but compared to Vocaloid 6, Piapro NT is pretty accessible and it comes with Miku NT. And it's very easy to use compared to traditional instruments) - she has a great voice - has multiple MMD model - She can be represented however you want according to her creators. - she got songs composed by many artists all over the world and those songs have actual meaning. - she has many voicebanks for many languages, including English and Japanese (I believe she has a Spanish, chinese and Korean voicebank too) - even Miku's oldest MMD model (MMD Miku legacy model which is obviously V2 Miku's design) is way better than polar's newest model. - everyone can make MMD models for Miku because Unity is free. - Miku can have Vroid models too which can be used with DSS and DSS is very cheap and achieves the same thing as MMD. - Miku's voice sounds amazing, even in her latest voicebank. - Miku's voice is easily palettable Ok, I think Miku clearly wins over Polar

this whole thing just feels WAY too manufactured. part of what makes hatsune miku so appealing is the fact that, since she’s an instrument anyone can use, she’s never had a set personality or appearance. they’re trying way too hard to make polar seem like a relatable human celebrity while trying to keep those vocaloid inspirations, which just doesn’t work, especially combined with how they’re seemingly not gonna acknowledge how similar she is to more popular vocaloids

it's SO generic, too. I'm not a Miku fan (no disrespect lol) but they're not on the same level. the animation looks low-effort and cheap for 2022 and Metaverse. they keep trying to force the parasocial angle (as Metaverse does) and like, that she's "more than a CGI model," but I don't buy it with that design and the most not-bad-but-very-generic songs. I wonder if it's that way on purpose - to appeal to as many people as possible but instead, don't garner much interest. we've seen an increase in virtual artists/influencers outside Japan like Apoki and KDA but they have real people backing them. Polar feels incredibly cynical and manufactured, like in the direction of Black Mirror but boring, even knowing that most "real" artists *are* manufactured.

Hatsune Miku and vocaloid in general were such a phenomenon because it wasn’t just “ohh this singer doesn’t exist” but it was also a tool available for everyone to explore their creativity, across music genres, languages, etc. This Polar girl doesn’t bring anything new to the virtual singer thing that vocaloid and vtubers haven’t.

  • @crptpyr

I mean vocaloid wasn't originally intended to be what it became iirc It was just a synth tool for composers The fact that the later vocaloids (the first really aren't all that popular. If you check the first voicebanks for the characters, it's pretty obvious that Miku became the face of it basically by accident because her first vb was definitely the clearest and most versatile of that generation) and the box art for each voice bank was accompanied by a mascot image because when you work with a voice it helps to have a face to put it to The fact vocaloid became its own "genre", community, and the vocaloids became essentially pop stars all happened later than vocaloid's original conception. But yeah, when people talk about vocaloid they talk like Miku was conceived as some virtual pop star when really she just started out as a music tool and became that later Plus imo it's kind of dismissive of how community driven vocaloid is, and acts like the vocaloid, her music, her personality, etc is all some centralised controlled thing when it really isn't

@@IAmNotAWoodenDuck actually it's already a very big trend to have virtual avatars for a number of things. They have virtual avatars to show off a lot of big name brand stuff and even a company solely meant for virtual models. They are trying to be diverse by having people of different skin tones and genders but at the same they're taking jobs from real people. Plus there's at least one of these avatars who tried to share a story of her being assaulted by a guy. It's just disgusting what they'll do to get attention and avoid paying actual people..

What makes Vocaloid so special is the community behind it. Yeah, she's cute and all, but first and foremost Miku is an instrument-one that makes creating lyrical music a lot more accessible than it would be otherwise, and because of that she (and Vocaloid as a whole) has garnered a massive community of artists who are able to use these instruments to create something they otherwise wouldn't have been able to, along with fans of said artists like myself. Most Vocaloid songs out there weren't made by a corporation, they were made by real, everyday people just doing something they love, and there's a lot of beauty in that you don't really get to see anywhere else. It only makes Polar all the more insulting, too. Imagine missing the point _that_ badly.

Creations like Polar result from places with a very Anti-Art perspective, they don’t care about the creativity and the love people put into their artwork, only the rewards that can be reaped from it. It’s a place like that where things like Polar or whatever tech bros pull out from their rectum, their creations exist to bring them clout and money. And said creations also have a very visible lack of soul to them. This is what happens when you value quantity over quality.

I believe that freedom we've been given for Vocaloids is one of the reasons why they're so popular. We aren't being held down by copyright laws or having a company breathing down our necks when we create with/for Vocaloids. Its pure freedom for us and in a world where everything exists for a profit and you don't get to use anything without money. Vocaloids seem like they're a god-send to us folks without money to pay our way to copyright material. So many amazing, talented producers got to explore their talent with Vocaloids. To sharpen their skills or experience music creations without the need of a record label. And that's just something Polar doesn't give to us. She's simply a cheap way to make money without having to give most of the profits to a real musician. I 100% wouldn't be surprised if Polar's voice actor doesn't get compensated properly for her voice and time. They definitely seem like the type of company to swindle her out of money just because she isn't the face of the music.

I tried to get into music a few years ago and literally the only affordable non-free thing among the things I was considering DTM-wise was a voicebank. A LOT of new producers these days in Japan are teenagers, it's entirely possible to save up 160 dollars and buy Miku or friends and just rely on Garageband and Audacity for the rest. Especially with how Miku's company as their own standalone software now regardless of Vocaloid, you can buy either their own engine's Miku or one of the Vocaloid versions without having to buy Vocaloid itself (which stopped being plug n play over a decade ago). Buying just one instrument bank on the other hand could be like 300 or 400 dollars... 😵

Here to pick at her design bc art design: - Overall there’s no personality communicated in her design beyond an attempt to be ‘relatable’ by being trendy. This has the adverse effect of making her feel flat like a badly written young adult fiction protagonist as she has nothing personal about her. She will also become dated as trends change. - She doesn’t express. Like at all. You don’t need a character’s mouth to show emotions (look at Gromit) so the mask is no real excuse for that. This just makes her feel more like a robot than a person. - Either they need to make her hair less neon or darken her skin tone a tad because everything around her head is too bright. I can’t look at it comfortably. - She has no unique silhouette which makes her design seem generic and forgettable. I hate to reference the corporate mouse but you know the shape of Mickey’s head from a glance. She has no stylisations to proportions or anything to add to her silhouette that would make her feel less like a default model they slapped neon hair on. Just adding some lil hair buns or a hair piece would have helped with that. Everything about her feels more like a 3d model barbie they dress up than an actual personality, which is what they seem to be marketing her as. Overall it aint it chief. If you wanna see some decent designs of fictional musicians go look at Gorillaz

Polar feels so weird to me, because her design and marketing are clearly meant to appeal to kids, specifically kids who are left to scroll on TikTok and KZread endlessly with no parental supervision. She's doing the TikTok dances that are very suggestive but also very popular with kids watching, and her entire design looks like it's from a talking-Tom-esque app for children. She's very "grown-up", but in a way that's clearly meant to be consumed by children. And given the way this company seems to market almost exclusively to children with their other brands, it seems more than likely this was the goal. IDK, the whole thing gives me the ick.

Things like these are so clearly targeted towards children, or are failing so miserably at targeting actual gen z that they end up targeting gen alpha by mistake. Everything from her costuming to her dancing and the style of her design and music videos are in line with the high contrast, extreme saturation, colours everywhere type of entertainment that little kids are growing up with in entertainment media like mobile games now. Usually if you see something strangely popular, it’s because majority of the fan base are little kids. Which is totally fine, though it does irk me that this then reaches news sites where they report it like it’s revolutionary (because the writers and readers of those sites are all boomers who can’t tell the difference between a money vacuum for children and an actually established concept like Hatsune Miku, who is mostly supported by fan passion).

Crypton (the company that made Miku) are not responsible for her rise to fame, its the thousands of small-time artists that loved miku's design/concept/voice enough to create songs with her, draw her, etc. Thesoul publishing doomed Polar from the start by making her follower count and views a core part of her identity as a virtual star also her design sucks lol

Yeah this Polar is not new, trashy even. A fucking product that is so bad nobody even had heard until now.

The fact that Polar feels so hollow and generic literally set her up for failure immediately. Why she feels that way is obvious- she's a simple marketing tactic and money grab. She feels hollow, because there was no true artistic intent involved in her original concept or creation, and even in the song writing. Part of the reason why Miku is so popular is because of how versatile the concept of a "voicebank" is; anyone has access to it and can create what they want. This creates a community of independent artists free of any limits that would be put into place if associated with companies or the like. Thanks to this, many talented people have gotten the chance to express their artistic vision through music and lyrics, which is what gives Vocaloid its "personality" and "passion," something Polar could never achieve bc of all the corporate insanity going on. She will never have the range in genres and topics Miku could ever have, considering the lack of artistic freedom and individuality.

i’m honestly sorta surprised no one has talked about the dang Gorillaz, they’ve been around since 1998 even before miku. they were one of the first popular bands that was like completely fake/made up and rose to a huge fame. even now the Gorillaz are popular and still producing bANGERs ! as well as have been performing concerts since 2001 with holograms but live instruments so like blEndinG of reality and digital media.

The Archies beat the Gorillaz as the first hit cartoon band with their song Sugar Sugar going No. 1 in the US in 1969 Also, more people are mentioning Hatsune Miku is because Polar is very obvious coping her style by being an animesque, virtual idol and the Gorillaz are more comic book, graffiti style, alt rock band.

Her visual design isn’t even that appealing? I think part of the reason Miku has stayed relevant so long is because she has had good character design multiple times over.

fr the reason why miku can be recognized pretty easily is bc people actually cared about her design polar just looks like a oc someone made only to never draw them again 💀

Yeah. She doesn't even stick to one memorable outfit because she doesn't have a consistent character design. When you think "Miku", you think pigtails and her uniform-like outfit but when you think Polar... Eh. Even when Miku is put in different outfits you can still picture her design but since Polar doesn't have a consistent outfit and hairstyle... It's really difficult to picture her when you think "Polar."

5:56, wheb miku was at her peak popularity and more companies began working on vocaloids, there occurred this problem called "miku formula" where all those vocaloids would follow the same design elements as miku, including her iconic long blue ponytails. i will be absolutely not surprised if the same is happening with polar, there's no way these people haven't heard of vocaloid or miku at the very least
