    Can confirm this is doo doo. In a vivid dream I had a realization that “I am dreaming” and became conscious and was able to control my body. Everything looked so real I actually didn’t believe I was dreaming. I tried the finger poke and it didn’t go through my hand. I ended up using the nose pinch but still wasn’t convinced even though it worked. It wasn’t until I looked at my hands and they looked like alligator feet that I truly believed I was dreaming. Lucid dreaming is intense. I never believed I would confuse the dream world with waking life while I have conscious control of my thoughts and actions. Your approach to reality checks makes perfect sense to me after having experienced it. On another note, I normally do the digital watch test. Ironically, in my dream, my watch had been stolen. That was one of many bizarre events that made me realize I was dreaming. It forced me to resort to those other tests though because I didn’t have my watch in the dream world.

    I am 62 years old today and have been lucid dreaming sense childhood. It just has always been that way for me. Not to say that all my dreams are lucid. Recently my lucid dreams took a huge leap forward after I happened to put an old red lava lamp on a dresser in my bedroom to provide some low light in case I need to get up in the dark. although it provides a dim light it is not visible with my eyes closed. I have never made it a practice to lucid dream. Now here is where it gets strange... The first night I had that lamp on I had a very long lucid dream. I met another person and we both knew we were dreaming. My sure-fire dream check is always to touch something. Feel its texture, so I asked to hold her hand. She was real to me. We talked for a long time and agreed to look for each other in the future. We call it the dream scape. It's been about two weeks now and we have met two times. It's fantastic and so much more real than my reality. New sub here. I wonder if anyone else has ever had this experience? Have a great day!

    I did the finger through palm realty test for a long time and only got lucid once doing it in a dream. It was really cool, though. The skin of my hand started to tent elastically around my finger until my finger popped painlessly out the other side of my skin. Very sensational. Then I asked a nearby dream character what I had to do to get lucid every night (since he was a projection of my subconscious I thought he would have the intel) and he kind of got really awkward and stuttered something about having to go somewhere. Then he ran behind and employee’s only door and like a dingus I DIDN’T FOLLOW HIM! I always wonder what was behind that door. PSA for all you fledgling oneironauts: rules do not apply in your dreams!! Go and do whatever you want. Follow your curiosity.

    Hi, I've attempted tons of Reality Checks or Tests whatsoever, counting fingers or putting my finger through my hand barely failed me, BUT in rare occasions it actually did fail. When I try the test that you were talking about it NEVER failed me not even once, and that's one of the reasons I actually do that one a lot, also because it's a little bit more easy to do in front of people (I just go ahead and make them think I'm about to sneeze when I'm actually doing a RC), again, a great video as always

    Thanks for all these great videos! I've been doing this for a couple Weeks, and so far the Nose Pinching is what seems to work best for me (For the two (maybe a third time briefly) times I've got Lucid Dreams.) the first time it happened I looked at my Hands, and saw extra little Fingers growing, but Pinching my Nose is what really made me realize. Then I had another Lucid Dream a couple Nights ago, and it was the same thing where Nose Pinching got me Lucid, in that Dream I did remember to try the Finger through Palm thingy afterwards just to see how it would work, and it did go through, but Nose Pinching, and checking my Hands is my go to Reality Test. I've even taken to Nose Pinching whenever I wake up as a lot of times I get a "False Awakening" or whatever its called (each time I've Lucid dreamed it happened a couple times before I actually woke up.) and I immediately know I'm still Dreaming when I do that as I can't really check my Fingers in the Dark.

    Sound logic there, Daniel! I was originally shown to use finger counting, and technically it has worked a number of times, but I think there's always been some other strange thing that has happened first to make me lucid, and the missing or extra fingers have just been further confirmation. I wonder how many lucid opportunities I've missed because of having the correct number of fingers in a dream. It's a hard habit to break, but now I'm forming a new habit of looking for wonky text & it works well. I've started doing nose pinch tests too, but I have yet to actually do it in a dream.

    I've been using the finger through palm test for a few months now and it's worked only one time for me. The first time I used it on a dream it didn't go through my palm. I remember feeling how my finger touched my palm and thinking "oh my, I'm awake" so I kept on with my dream until I woke up and realized I was actually dreaming. The second time it actually worked, although it was hard and I lost lucidity almost in an instant. The next lucid dream I had it didn't work again, but I tried counting my fingers an managed to convince myself I was dreaming (lol). So yeah, as you said, it's not like the method doesn't work, but at least for me it's not as reliable as other reality tests

When I realized that I frequently dream about the toilets (😜😆) I started doing reality checks every time whilst visiting one in waking life. A day or two later- I managed to push my finger through my palm and became lucid. But the first time it didn't work, yet I thought I should check again, just in case the first trial went wrong and it worked! 😀

    The first reality test I started using was the finger through palm obviously. It's been pretty reliable for me, but it fails me for a completely different reason. I tend to show it to dream characters and even though the results are clearly working, I'm too immersed in the plot showing the dream characters and continue with non-lucidity. Even if my finger doesn't go through right away, my hand always feels very spongy in a dream and like it's going to work, so it eventually works for that reason. I'm always showing dream characters reality tests and not getting lucid for that reason. This is why the mindset is critical! Even with the optical reality check, I would be getting people to perceive my vision in first person so they could see the lack of blinking in my vision, and I would continue with the non-lucidity there too! I just need to pay attention (your keyword) to the results so I can actually interpret them! I recently made it so my first test is whether I'm interacting with anyone, because that's where I'm always failing and it's all the more reason to pay more attention to the tests if I am! Same with if I'm struggling to remember the binary technique. I associate a time to make the memory more distinct, but I sometimes forget what time I associated only in dreams. I've been trying to practice in conversations, which is even more difficult than normal because of my hard of hearing and having to piece most things together with context (only hear like 30% of sentences on average, oftentimes less), and practicing that seems to help so far!

    Throughout most of my lucid dreaming career, I've used the finger counting technique. I know you've said it can be unreliable but it has gotten me lucid many times and only failed one time so far. If I had to theorize, I would guess that my expectation (originally learned years ago from twaddle merchants) causes it to work for me more than it should. I am also very thorough when I test so even if it fails, that probably isn't going to be the deciding factor for lucidity

    THE VERY FIRST TIME I LUCID DREAMED I TRIED THE FINGER-THROUGH-HAND METHOD EVERY 30 MINUTES (WHILE I WAS AWAKE, OBVIOUSLY)...I DID IT FOR MAYBE 2 DAYS?..WHEN PRACTICING THIS METHOD I EXPECTED TO BE ABLE TO PUSH MY FINGER THROUGH MY PALM IN MY DREAM AND BECOME LUCID. BUT WHEN I LUCID DREAMED THE VERY FIRST TIME, I WAS LOOKING AT MY HAND AND WHEN I WENT TO PUT MY FINGER ON MY PALM I REALISED THAT MY HAND WAS GLOWING. WHEN I LOOKED AT IT, I HAD AN EXTRA PINKY. BUT IT WAS COMPLETELY GLOWING...THAT'S HOW I KNEW I WAS DREAMING. ALTHOUGH THE METHOD DIDN'T HAVE THE OUTCOME I WAS EXPECTING, I STILL MANAGED TO BECOME LUCID NONETHELESS. SO, I CANNOT AGREE WITH THIS VIDEO. THE METHOD WAS NOT A WASTE OF TIME FOR ME.

    I do believe that it is possible when dream control is high or I constantly imagine and believe that it is let's say always working. Anyway ...when Ive been chased by a group of people I was super stressed and tried to get my finger through my palm to get lucid ( or to get power? I needed an confirmation that I am actually dreaming) and it didn't worked! ....so I kept running away ...so stressful. I guess it was because I was so stressed....normally I always imagine it to go through my palm or at least disappear. I am used to walk through walls in dreams....so no mental barrier there. Anyway since then I shifted my focus on the pinch ya nose thing. Definitely needed a more reliable test. And your video came right on time.

    Oh that's impossible to answer in a single comment. I'd suggest that you watch some of the guide videos here on the channel, as that should give you a good (and free) refresher course on where best to focus your efforts. If you really want to take things seriously, maybe consider reading my book "Are You Dreaming?" which should give you everything you could possibly need to get started. (I apologize if that sounds like a sales pitch, it's not entirely, as my book is probably the most efficient way to get as much information as possible). I hope that helps. I recently discovered I'm about 50% French in my heritage, so it's great to have a French viewer. Also, France was the country that produced the world's very first book on lucid dreaming!

    Ok, but, why the hypnotic spiral? I'm just asking because if I wasn't writing down notes, it might have drawn in my attention more, which is saying a lot! Great video as always. I apologize beforehand if my grammar is off (college started back up and my brain is fried from the multiple syllabus I've had to listen to), but, I'll consider "Introduction to Lucid Dreaming" a third class today! I used to do finger through palm and the counting fingers reality test as my only two tests and they worked fine a majority of the time they were preformed in a dream, up around 70-75%. Since maybe 4 months ago, I started adding on more tests (looking around my surroundings, remembering my day) since they still held affective and then 2 more (nose pinch, clock test) a month or two ago. Old habits die hard as, even though I've changed the order to nose pinch first, in almost every lucid I've had since the changes, I've done the finger tests first. Even though they have held up somewhat good, they have started becoming a bit harder to actually see, as I could have a shorter finger or more fingers but doubt my own view. This course be due to negative expectations, but, I have found that the times where I've done more reliable tests, they've worked 100%, though 1/1 times isn't a monumental number. Anyway, great video today! My brain is absolutely fried right now, so, I'll cut it somewhat short today! Keep up the work!

    I never used the finger through palm technique mostly because I've never had a dream where I phased through anything physical. It didn't make sense to me with the way my dreams are structured tbh. Now the one that's almost always worked for me is counting my fingers, not 100% reliable but almost every lucid dream I've had has been gotten through that check. Even though I do the nose pinch check irl, I always do it after the finger check so I've never actually needed to use it after the first check works. Funny thing is though, even though my brain is frankly horrible with finger consistency (I had fuckin 15 on one hand once), it will still find ways to trick me. Once I had tried checking my hand and thought I counted 5 only to realize my middle finger was actually two fingers braided together.

    The finger though palm has indeed failed me, so thanks for this video so that I won't waste more time on it. I'm going to try the pinching nose and instead of digital watch (I don't wear a watch so I guess this wouldn't work for me) I'll read the time or some text on my phone or laptop and see if that is stable.

    That's why it didn't work! Thank you very much, this is SO helpful! It's funny, I had two occasions (in the same night), where I was noticing inside the dreams that something was weird and I did this, and it didn't work, but that then triggered me to do the nose pinch test. I didn't quite get there, though. So, I guess it was more like a pseudo-lucid dream? Again, thank you so much for sharing!

    yesterday i had a vivid scary dream and was getting lucid, i thought it was all not real because it was too scary and i wanted to be in a dream rather than live as it was real. i realy thought i was dreaming but then i did the infamous Finger in palm check and it failed me like it always did when i doing this check. its always when i try this reality check that it wont work. also, afraid of pincing my nose in a dream since i think it would mean that i'm not breathing in reallife. the check that went well the last time (that was years ago so i'm now getting back into it, since this year) was looking at my phone and seeing different numbers. the dream had a sicking dark uneasy feeling, and i was getting to panick mode and was afraid because the world is going to end with black clouds and black snow and some intense yellow lightning. all because an Ice Godess was dying on the scene and she got all the force of her life getting this storm and lightning together and it went like the World was going to End. there were three other women besides me (i'm a guy so i think i know where this sign comes from...) and they said its not possible that its a dream. i said otherwise but when the finger in palm trick didnt work i immediately stopped believing that i was dreaming and it went normal Scary Dream again; not soon after i woke up because the dream fell apart in blackness. i was so frustrated when i got up because i Was lucid for one second but because the realitycheck failed on me I was not convinced that i was dreaming anymore and the girls said so as well that it was infact real. lol. next time i check for my nose or maybe watching the clock on my phone (i dont have a watch anymore) and rewatching it afterwards, maybe that 'll help.

    I came to this video after waking up from a nap where I had dreamed about doing the finger through palm reality check and since I had already done it so many times my brain just kinda assumed that... I wasn't dreaming. Even in my dream I could feel time slow down around me and I was thinking, "okay, you are about to lucid dream for the first time. this is your moment. you HAVE to check" and I tried it like 3 times, nothing happened and I woke up. Kinda pissed about it but I guess I should've known better

    Then you're lucky, because it's based on entirely unsound principles. A lot of people think homeopathy works, even though it doesn't have any foundations in medical reality. Remember, even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day. The argument here isn't that it never works, but that it is very unreliable, and that by using it you're inviting missing a lot of potential lucid dreams. Which is bonkers when there are alternatives based on sound principles with much higher reliability. Remember, I have no reason to randomly criticise this particular test, it would be great if it was reliable. What I am trying to do here is to make sure people are investing their efforts the best way, for best results. Unfortunately, finger through palm is not reliable. Its not that it cannot work but that it is very unreliable. And reliability is absolutely vital with reality checks. If a test is only 20% reliable, imagine how.l many chances for lucidity you'll miss. It also means 80% your daytime effort training to remember to do it is wasted.

  • @NetPro38

    You are absolutely right, for me the finger through palm test have always failed. However there is another test that I always perform afterwards, which is just looking at tha palms of my hands. In my dreams I see that I have hands on my finger tips. Or some times I have more or less fingers and sometimes my fingers split to multiple fingers.

    Is breathing in your dreams synced with your physical body breathing? I also want to ask about the finger counting reality check, I'm guessing it isn't as unreliable since it's how I got lucid in most of my lucid dreams.

  • @LucidDreamPortal

    @LucidDreamPortal

    Yes, on the whole eye movements and breathing are synchronized in REM, neither of these muscle groups enter paralysis. The finger counting test is a stability test, so similar to the text and digital watch tests. Fingers will be a little less reliable for a test, as they should be more stable due our mind having a strong model of our hands.

  • @jonny3003

    @jonny3003

    @@LucidDreamPortal Regarding breathing: I think only the diaphragm remains unparalyzed during REM. The chest is paralyzed. That is why you can feel that weight on your chest during sleep paralysis. Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • @LucidDreamPortal

    @LucidDreamPortal

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@jonny3003 Quite right, but it is the diaphragm that is responsible for breathing, while other voluntary muscles enter paralysis (due to the actions of a neurotransmitter called glycine). With the exception of eye movements. However, the diaphragm exists in an unusual space as far as muscles go, being both voluntary and involuntary, which is why you will notice changes in breathing patterns for subjects in REM (and the familiar panting and gasping for air that occurs during nightmares). However, in other stages of sleep, the diaphragm reverts to a more involuntary process. In practical terms, this equates to us being able to use the nose pinch as a reliable test. It is also why holding one's breath in a dream is a good means to rapidly awaken.

    I've tried using this as a "confirmation RT", when I already felt pretty sure that I was dreaming. But the idea of the finger going though skin, flesh and bone grossed me out so much that I almost wanted to wake up immediately, just to make sure it wouldn't work. (Why? When she was a child, a friend of mine wanted to spear a piece of bread with a raclette skewer. Because the bread had a very thick crust, the skewer did not want to go through. So she held the bread in the palm of one hand and pushed the skewer against it as hard as she could with the other... It did not just go INTO the hand, it went THROUGH.) After this cheerful little story, let me say: I never realized WHY this test is so unreliable, but it makes a lot of sense! I did not consider that you'd need dream control, which is a conundrum.

    I’ve used the finger test in my checks, but never as the primary test, it’s always one of a battery of tests in addition to nose pinch, recounting my steps, text/color shift, etc. Is there any harm in having it as one of many, or would it be better to drop it as a waste of time? Also you mentioned being unable to control your dreams when not lucid, would you classify expectations shaping the directions and outcomes of dreams as a form of non-lucid control? I’ve had that happen multiple times ranging from what’s said next in conversations to outcomes of events. It’s mostly something recognized after the fact, but it’s a pattern I keep seeing popping up.

    I like that - to have the "the detective mindset". Was maybe not doing this enough - I have been doing reality checks but not always asking myself if I'm dreaming. Since this evening whenever something changes - like I feel my mind has been wandering then I ask myself if I'm dreaming and do the reality check. Then if it's clear I'm not dreaming I conclude to myself that I'm not dreaming. What do you think of that?

    When dreaming you nose is a little bigger then normal. Some times when you pinch you nose a try to breath through it in a dream air comes out the sides and you think I am not pinching hard enough so look at your hand and fingers or shut your lips and breath through them.

    I would always recommend a physical dream journal over a digital journal. Both are useful, but a physical journal seems to be more effective for most. Plust it creates a more substantial connection to the dream world that digital content just can't. Much in the way that a physical letter is a far more personal item than an email.

So for like 1or 2 months straight I would try so much brain power before I went to sleep to reslize if I was dreaming or not. And when I did I tried to move but the dream like talked to me and someone said stop. About 3 days later I could control. I was able to control them for like one to 3 weeks. I never did anything crazy though. Just moved around really. Is all I have to do is imagine something. Like flying? If I go back to lucid dreaming I want to do cool things. Such as flying.

I used to perform it, together with other tests, and I used to find resistance and some pain, as well as weird effects with my "dream flesh" when the finger finally went through. Yeah from my experience this test is indeed smeg. it also is a lot harder to get into the lucid mindset when doing a test from it as it is a lot harder to imagine your finger magically passing through your hand than it is to imagine a number changing or simply the sensation of breathing. I've also got a question, in my 8 ish months of LD practice (on & off in terms of dedication & effort but I've at a minimum been journaling every day) I've had two lucid dreams, both very short, but they were both very similar and both were in my home, which very few of my dreams are. But, I spend most of my time at home and thus preform most of my reality tests and do most of my lucid thinking while at home, (one of the lucids was triggered by the nose pinch test, the other through noticing something that didn't make sense) so I'm wondering if you think this might be why both of my lucid dreams were in my home? And if you have any advice on how I could think/what I could do to it more likely that I would be more aware when my dreams are nothing like my waking life and/or I am not a part of the dream. I always try to preform reality tests whenever I notice anything that seems out of the ordinary which probably makes up about 10-20% of the RT's that I do.

  • @LucidDreamPortal

    Try to broaden what triggers your reality tests. Even if your dreams do not seem like they are based on your waking life, you can almost always find a connection (dreams are, after all, based on our waking lives). Once you establish the themes of your dreams, don't be too specific about matching them in waking life, but have a broad target. For example, if I dream of the ocean, I don't visit the ocean often, but if I ever see an advert, picture, emoji, or hear words related to the ocean I perform a reality test.
