    As a Czech person watching this reaction...... I am surprised how did this film get into the US market while everything that is described in the movie is probably getting over the heads of casual viewers. This movie has a lot of historical references which includes famous legends as well as describing ordinary life of ordinary, not aristocratic people or Catholic church priests. I like how they put so many legends, stories and even real events into such a short movie. Let me explain why is this movie so complex and hard to understand for non-Czech person, and even more difficult for American: Some reference: The priest being fat and other eating "whole turkey" is pinpointing the part of the history where the Church was becoming more of a money collector where you could have bought "desátek" which meant that you pay certain amount of gold, it justifies all your sins and you are cleansed. And everyone was religious back then, so the Church disused it for their profit so they lived in luxury, thus the portrayal of fat priest and eating meat, which was not so cheap back then. So it led a prominent priest called Jan Hus to try to reform the Church to clear it from this "purchasing cleansing" and take it back to its roots, as it was meant to be. So Jan Hus started preaching differently from "what was said" and he started to be disliked by the Church bishops, which led to burning of Jan Hus to death on pyre and it cause a huge revolution in Czech lands called Hussite wars in 15th century, which led to Crusades of Catholic Church to be sent over to the Czech lands to stop the rebellion, etc etc. Such a small reference, which hides a long history which influences our country even today. This is only one of many references, I could write thousands of words about references and legends portrayed in this movie. Thanks for the video. Greetings from the Czech Republic!

    As a Czech person, I have a few things to point out from my POV: 1. The CGI quality is pretty bad because it's the 1st 3D animated movie that was made in Czechia (2008). 2. The unsettling humour is quite common in older movies and cartoons. That's just culture, ig... 😅😅😅 (Yeah, nudity isn't that bad over here.) 3. Jemmy's name was translated wrong, Kuba is a nickname for Jakub, which is Jacob (correct me if Jemmy is a nickname for Jacob). Katy... There's no translation for her original name as far as I can recall. Matthew's name was translated RIGHT!!! :D 4. The English dubbing is worse... The Czech one fits better. 😂 5. When I saw the movie as a child, I was terrified. 6. That specific clock, Orloj, is very symbolic to Czechia, which is why they didn't want it built anywhere else. Yes, I admit that this movie is VERY unhinged, but it is super popular over here. We normalise some stuff that would be considered more taboo on the western side of the world (atp I even figured out we get more detailed sex education than Americans). In a nutshell: This movie is like a "pearl" of the local movie industry.

    There kinda is a working translation for the breasted girl. In Czech she is called Máca, all jokes pointing towards the word "macek" (meaning massive) aside, Máca is the Diminutive / short form / friend form of the name Marcela. And Marcela is used in US albeit spelled differently or gender swapped to Marcell. A good example is Marsellus Wallace from Pulp Fiction. The closest translation to English would then be something like Mari, Mara or Marcia.

    I don't understand why they translated the names at all, though. Imagine if Disney did that whenever they adapted a story from a non-English speaking country, like they renamed Mulan to Marie and Shang to Shaun or something, it's kind of ridiculous to anglisise a piece of the culture like that.

    You are so right about the sex education part! They barely teach us ANYTHING when it comes to sex or anything related to our bodies because they think it's inappropriate when it's not. And to make matters worse, parents don't speak with their kids about this topic either, which is exactly why we have so many kids scared and confused when puberty happens. Nowadays, it's come to a point where we have to rely on KID'S SHOWS to teach our children about basic stuff, which is pretty damn sad if you ask me because it's the adult's job to teach their kids about this stuff, not technology.

    as a czech person who quite literally grew up watching Goat story - i find it so incredibly funny how i do get the refferences and kurtis does not. Mathews story is actually an adapted version of the Doctor Faust, which is a czech myth + it is actually said that the Charles bridge was built using eggs in the binding cement to last longer. Also I can't get over the fact of what names the dub gave the two main characters, cause it makes absolutely no sense :DD i very much enjoyed this film as a little kid and i think it was actually quite informative for my little brain back then. now i just think it's iconic and i still love it!

    Hey! Czech girl here! I actually watched the movie several times in my childhood; in the original dabing, it is even more creepy. Like the goat has a strong man voice, originally. The thing with nudity is/was very common. I remember lots of kids' movies with pepees, boobs and butts. It ain't traumatising just funny for kids. Many czech households aren't so strict about nudity or bad dictionaries in movies.

    Honestly, I'm not gonna talk about this movie's plot and explain how it connects to Czech myths and legends, I bet tone of people already did, but I'll note - the English dub is the thing to firmly drill it into my head that Goat, is in fact, a woman. Because her original voice, IIRC, is pretty unisex, I believe she had a male voice actor in the Czech dub. It's a bit of a whiplash to see an English dub and Goat with such a clearly female voice. You know, as a kid, I thought she's a dude for a good half of the movie.

    ok so for anyone who's wondering, kurtis didn't talk about: -the fact that katy got her nails by stealing them off of coffins (i deadass have no idea why) -in one scene goat and the motorboat lady from the bar have a wlw moment and basically hit on each other, goat literally asking her "so do you think I can get you out of that dress?" -when katy was fully naked, there's a shot of her walking past the stereotypical chinese men, and they start hollering and one says in the most stereotypical chinese accent I've ever heard, "oooh, can we have pretty lady too?" -one time when goat is off at the bar getting drunk, there's this part where this random stranger is just milking her while she's just chillin and drinking her beer -in one scene katy just pulls a whole ass head of cabbage out of her cleavage and gives it to goat i'm not even kidding it was insane

    i can actually explain why goat having that pipe in her throat stopped her from dying! when someone is hanged, one of two things can happen: 1. if it's a short drop, they will suffocate to death. this isn't very common nowadays, but was popular before executions were intended to be humane 2. if it's a long drop, their neck will either break (causing unconsciousness and immediate death thereafter) or they'll be decapitated. the long drop is more complicated since it requires math to determine the right height to drop the victim from - too high, and they will lose their head; too low, and they'll suffocate. in goat's case, it seems like this was a short drop (makes sense, given the time period and public nature of the execution), so the metal pipe in her throat was likely there to prevent the rope from closing her windpipe/trachea. this allowed goat to continue breathing even after she was supposed to have died. when she fell down/was let down, she somehow coughed up the metal pipe (goats rarely vomit/throw things up, but whatever) and was able to breathe normally again. i'm not exactly sure how this works, because i'm pretty sure if i tried to hold a pipe in my throat i'd choke, but maybe it worked for her because she's a goat. hope this helps!

    To add some context as a Czech - this movie is pretty bad, but some of the things in it are a bit less weird for a native: - the devil playing cards: cards are known as "devil's pictures" here - the eggs falling off a cart: it's a legend about Charles bridge (that eggs were used in the cement - and it's actually confirmed by archaeological research!) - the hamster wheel: those were actually used as cranes back then - the nails: iron was quite expensive in middle ages so stealing them might made sense. And women's dresses didnt have pockets, so... - the blinding of master Hanuš: that's a part of the legend about Prague Astronomical Clock - the look of the characters: that's supposed to be homage to traditional Czech marionettes, which are often quite grotesque... its a bad homage tho - nudity and adult content: Czech fairytales and movies are like that more then they are in the west. We are all sick creeps here. But yeah, its a super bad movie.

    @thewarnerchannel728510 ай бұрын

    The movie's hard to understand because, as the title says, it's "The old Prague legends" a good many of which about the clock which most people haven't seen. They're shaking horse carts of eggs into the cement because there's a legend that the Charles IV bridge had eggs mixed in it (there actually is an architectural technique of using eggs in cement, but it wasn't used in the Charles IV bridge). The legend of Hanus losing his eyes and breaking the clock is part of the local legends (though the clock wasn't actually built by Hanus, that was a misinterpretation of records) There's constantly imagery of skeletons and birds in a skeleton's mouth because the clock has a skeleton on it and there is a legend that when a knight was wrongfully imprisoned, he saw a bird perch in the skeleton's mouth when it opened during the hourly chiming, but when the chiming ended, the skeleton's mouth closed and the bird was trapped until it opened again the next hour. This was a good omen that the knight would be found innocent and escape the jaws of death, thus the skeleton and the bird in it's mouth became a symbol of hope. But if you don't know that story, all the skeleton's with birds in their mouths make no sense. The story of Matthew's deal with the Devil is plainly derivative of Doctor Faust (Latinized Faustus) lampshaded in the movie by him squatting in the Faust House, also located in Prague (though the historical doctor Faust would've lived later than when the clock was first completed) The headless guy blowing a trumpet is a reference to another figure on the clock which has since lost its head. Katie is a reference to a figure of a courtesan who bends over every hour to let you peak at her cleavage, hence the Praguian saying "Every boy over 12 knows the exact time in Prague!" When nails sometimes fall out of the figures and people step on them in the streets, the people of Prague will say "The courtesan must be keeping nails in her bodice!" hence the boob nails. In the original story, Matthew had more to do with the plot in that he and Jemmy were in a love triangle with Katie, and it was by Matthew's Satanic powers that Katie and the goat were magically swapped. The goat wanting to marry Jemmy because he milks her is also part of the story. It's a Faustian bargain for the goat as well because Matthew asks if she would like to switch places with Katie and the goat agrees, only to hang in Katie's place. Naturally, the goat surviving the hanging isn't part of the original folk tail, that was just added in this version to give it a happier ending. Everything past Faust House I made up

She was one of those sorta kids who was glued to the screen and watched every single movie you could think of. Her parents brought this one back from the clearance section of a Walmart I think, hoping that she’d never seen it before. After about 15 minutes of the movie this entire party of 10 year old girls were all so mortified of the movie we started screaming and crying. Her mom ripped the DVD from the blue ray player and I never got to find out how it ended. Thank you kurtis, now I can rest peacefully 🥲

    8:29 Doctor Faust is actually a famous character from German folk legends. Faust, much like Matthew, was a son of a peasant, but extremely talented, he managed to go to a university, but eventually became interested in dark magic and summoned Mephistopheles. He entered the pact with the devil and sold his soul in exchange for 24 years of service. He died in a rather gorey way, so I think this gives us a hint as for what happened to Matthew 😬

    Could I use Express VPN to make this movie NOT available to me?

  • @swine13

    @swine13

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, so use the vpn to send a url of this youtube video (specifically this one) to yourself with your own email account, but delete the email before you read it. The logical inconsistency of having deleted an unread message that you have read should create a temporal rift in space time. Now this rift won't stay open long, so you have to move quickly, but grab a physical copy of this movie and Frisbee it into the rift before it shuts. If done correctly, you should have just erased all memory of that object. Be careful not to throw anything else, or let anything that shouldn't go near the rift be there. I used to have a beautiful pet Quezeezee called "Charlotte" and I tried this rift trick (I was trying to get rid of hang nails), and before I could react, my beautiful Charlotte jumped into the rift and in a blink was gone forever. And you might say "what is a Quezeezee?" To which I will say: this ought to highlight just how severe the consequences of misusing a rift can be... If it fails to erase the memory, you either missed your throw (well done, you) or you probably don't have yourself added as a secure contact in your own address book. In which case, what are you even doing with your life?
