So if the fly thing was serious: They're most likely Sciara analis ,, and from own experience they're very difficult to deal with, as in I myself have been dealing with them for months now. The only ways from personal experience is natural predators but an other option is removing all the soil and cleaning the roots. Drying out really doesn't help, because some eggs seem to survive without issue really without water and once you water them again finally, the eggs just hatch and it continues.

Internet told me to try adding cinnamon to boiling water, letting it cool and then just pour it on the infected soil. Tried it and eventually worked, took a few weeks and kept moving infected plants outside and occasionally renewed all the soil on plants that had most of the Sciara in them. Took a month ish but theres none left now :)

A thick layer of sand also stops the flies from getting into the soil (More than 2 cm thick). They're not good at digging. They get into the soil by squeezing through little holes in it. So sand can stop them from doing that. Only watering the plants from the bottom helps a little too. Also using yellow sticky traps helps a lot. But I don't like doing that because it's a bit...inhumane. Also I feel like the flies learn to avoid them. Super big helpers are nematodes. They're small worms (too small to see with your bare eyes in most cases) that you can buy and add to the water you use for...watering xD They live inside the soil and eat the Sciara eggs.

Neem oil is always an option. Bugs HATE the stuff. Though always look up to make sure the Neem won't hurt your plant before use! I know it's not the best for ferns and succulents, otherwise it's a literal life saver for all my plants.

@@viogieviogie This! Really recommend finding neem oil and watering plants with the solution. I was gifted an orchid and it needed repotting, so i had to buy orchid soil. The soil had the fly eggs in them and they started hatching. I tried some homemade solutions - vinegar, water, dishsoap solution and fly traps - but they didnt really help, because they had spread to all of my plants and kept reproducing. I did two rounds of neem oil solution treatments and they literally disappeared in a week. Shortly put, neem oil makes grown flies unable to reproduce and stops the babies from growing up so they die. Its also used in some skin care products i think, so as a water solution its safe for humans and doesnt harm most plants. 10/10.

Aki. 1dont feel guilt if a friend listens to a rant. Just be ready to listen when they rant Even ! Eventually they will need you too. 2 with plants. You stop water till dirt just dries. Mist leaves with squirt bottle till then. Then Add. One inch (no less) layer of sand. Deco sand in colors is fine but sand. The drying deters the larval stage and the sand deters new egg laying. After you add the sand resume watering. Don’t let watering hole form , just adjust the sand to cover. If it’s still bad. After a few days. Add a sprinkling of baking soda on top of the sand. To catch adults still flying around yellow sticky traps work best. ( yellow plastic shapes covered in goo- usually butterfly shaped. Check amazon). Put In the pots! At night, put a light source ( I use an old phone with no auto off) next to said sticky traps to attract the little f’ers. It really does work. I have hundreds of plants indoors near the beach so... trust me it works. But be a little patient. Give it two weeks. You can also spray the plants in the meantime with insecticidal soap, not a long term fix but works to knock down an issue fast.

yikes, i... wasn't expecting a relatable episode today. Everyone struggles with insecurities, i know you hear shit like this from everyone but i totally understand that feeling, people just saying "Everything will be fine" doesn't just magically make everything disappear. I've listened to a lot of rants from friends, I always try to encourage them to speak frankly around me, because i hate seeing them sad as i care so damn much about them. But i admit, it does sometimes feel like I have nowhere to turn, because I don't look after myself enough. But being able to help people makes up for that. Also i fucking hate fruit flies, can confirm they are the most irritating pieces of shit in the fucking universe

  • @birdmaster091

    @birdmaster091

    3 жыл бұрын

Agreed to both! Fruit flies are Devil spawn and balance in relationships can be difficult. Instead of 'everything will be fine' it can be helpful to work it out instead, try to find solutions or at least a semblance of an answer. Talking with friends is helpful, but if you feel like you're being a burden to one person, spread it out amongst a few people or talk to a therapist too. It can be easy to doubt oneself, but the people in life who really matter will stick around.

For your plants: i always use those sticky plastic thingies made to trap flies. There are ones that are made espiecially for plant pots that have a longer end to stick into soil. There is glue on both sides and yeah... Leave it in for a couple of days and it should be okay. I have isopods and there is a kind of mosquito(not the ones that bite humans and they are as tiny as fruit flies) that loved the damp soil in their terrarium... So i had to stick one of those stickers on the ceiling of the box and after some time the problem was gone.

Can definitely relate to the fly situation. I often lie in my bed and think about how lucky I am to be living in Japan during these times and being able to go to school on the GI Bill so I don't have to worry about money. Not to mention being able to shoot and edit videos part-time for extra money for gear and stuff, and to meet so many interesting people along the way. It gets hard for me to sleep at night, so I go to take a shower before bed, and what do I see in there with me? A fly. I don't know how it got in there, all I know is that it's there. Sometimes I shoo it away and carry on smartly. Other times, I just turn on the shower and let the water rain on my head, all while the fly watches. What helps me get through those times is to go farther south in Kanagawa to the beach. There, I can feel the stresses melt away as I eat some BBQ and drink my chuhai. The ocean is full of diatoms and when they die, leave behind small skeletons. These skeletons are ground up and turned into what is called Diatomaceous Earth. If you sprinkle this in your plant pots, the flies should go away. In short, go to the beach.

  • @cfrost3697

heyo aki! if your pest problem is coming from your plants then they're probably fungus gnats, not fruit flies. they come from the top layer of soil the plants are potted in. there's a bunch of things you can try before resorting to throwing the plants out, like bottom watering your plants until they die out (fill a big bowl or your bathtub with water and just place any plants that have holes in the bottom of the pots into the water and they'll soak up as much as they need then stop. you know they've been watered thoroughly when the soil on top is slightly damp.) there are little sticky traps you stick into the pot to catch them. you can also just re-pot them and get brand new soil if its bad enough. plus you can add a layer of sand over all of the soil on top to keep them from coming up and breeding. my whole house has been full of plants for a few years and the only time I get pests is when I bring a new plant home, so if you can get rid of them now I don't think they'll come back. the bottom watering and sand work for me no problem. hope it helps!

I have ordered your figure I'm so excited to get it and for your plant problem have you tried this use a solution of water and soap in a spray bottle to spray into the top layer of soil (or pour it directly on top). You can also do this with an organic insecticidal soap or Neem oil mixture; these natural pesticides should be effective after a few treatments. If that doesn't work get rid of all the soil and use fresh soil make sure you clean off the roots if you change the soil I hope this helps

For catching fruit flies I found that 1/4 cup of Apple Vinegar left out with a drop of liquid dish soap catches them. The apple vinegar attracts them and the drop of soap leaves a film on top of it that traps them in the bowl/cup. Renew the trap/traps every other day until the traps remain clean or fruit fly clean.

For the fly problem (not sure if it was a joke or not), I find that ceylon cinnamon (specifically ceylon which is pure cinnamon rather than regular) is a cheap and easy way of helping. You just sprinkle a little on top of the soil of each plant and it will not only repel bugs (especially gnats and mosquitos) because of the scent but it will also get rid of fungus (which will prevent pests like gnats laying eggs) and prevent infection. Also for plant with wide leaves, cleaning the leaves gently every month or so with neem oil also helps.

I used to have an umbrella cap as a kid (you grow up in FL and ever go to a theme park, you learn to have a poncho or SOMETHING) and it worked, but *my God* did it give you a headache so it wouldn't come off. It was a pain because of the headache it cause-a very very very literal pain. Love the content!

i have that same problem sometimes with gnats it's usually over watering for your plant's put a some sand on the top of the dirt that's supposed to help prevent them maybe a small amount of dish soap and water the next time you water them it's supposed to kill the babys in the dirt and before you water them let them completely dry out it helps to set reminders on your phone of when to water them and to help kill the one's flying around put a small dish of apple cider vinegar

For the fly problem, install screens on your window. They not only let the flies in but also other mosquitoes such as insects. If you already have a screen, check the outside, there might be a place where they're nesting or just a place where there's a lot of flies. You can then have an exterminator check it out.

About the flys I read you can stick the head of a match in the pot, they don‘t like the sulfur. For future, they live in the soil, you probably buyed the flys with it but to avoid it. It is important to store leftover the soil airtight in a plastic bag or buy fresh one

I think the head umbrella is for when you need to do something outside while it's raining. Like maybe when planting rice? I mean, it might be useful for our farmers but then again, we also have the Salakot which is probably already does that job, idk.

Flies can lay eggs in the soil. So you'll need to re-pot and soil them, then I recommend cayenne pepper, basil essential oil, eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, etc on the soil to keep them from laying eggs.

Fruit fly trap: (has been very effective for me, but I only have cacti as houseplants) 1. take a disposable container like a plastic cup 2. put a piece of banana or melon (the fruit works best, just the peel less effective) inside. strawberries and blueberries make pretty good bait, too 3. cover the top with cling film and tape it down/use a rubber band 4. use a fork to poke a few holes (like, two stabs, creating 8 2-3mm holes). the flies will get in, but struggle getting out 5. leave in fruit fly area for a few days 6. throw away cup WITHOUT removing plastic 7. repeat until all the flies are gone pro tip: use a few traps at the same time and see where you catch the most.
