    I’ve been using C1 since 2016. I chose it because it was the closest in ease of use to Apple’s Aperture. The colour control and RAW translations are second to none. Even with the odd niggle, I could never consider any other software. My partner uses Lightroom and I do shake my head at what’s missing. Having said that, I believe we should all use the tools that work for us. If LR works better for your work, that’s awesome. Again, nicely scripted and presented Dunna. I’ve used your videos to help me create my own on my new channel. 🙏

    I have both packages but switched my main editing to Capture One in December 2020. Periodically I carry out some back to back edits using the same RAW files. For me, the results i get from Capture One are always better with more pleasing and natural renders than I get from LR and, at the end of the day, it is all about the quality of the final image, not necessarily how you get there.

  • @dunnadidit

    @dunnadidit

    3 ай бұрын

    Thanks for sharing! I agree that the final result is super important. I found I get really great results with both programs so then HOW I get there makes a big difference for me, my time management and what I'm able to do. Do you ever run into the issue with capture one where the "fit to window" preview is slightly blurry? That drove me nuts... as soon as I zoom in a bit, it's fine, but that fit to window preview made things look like they were out of focus.

  • @SwanSycorax

    @SwanSycorax

    3 ай бұрын

    @@dunnadidit No, I haven't had that issue. I run a twin screen system based on an Apple M1 processor MacBook Pro with 64GB RAM and a 4TB internal SSD with a 27" additional display. In C1 I edit on the 27" display and have the catalogue open on the MacBook screen. Performance is superb. For me one of the biggest benefits of Capture One is the speed at which Collections work and the multi-layered keywords. My image library is in a single catalogue with almost every image sorted via the collections and keywords so that I can find what I want very quickly righty across the database. I used to do a similar thing in Lightroom but I found the collections to be really slow. I am really pleased with the most recent updates to Capture One but essentially, it is the renders the software gives me that are better than I get from LR and that image quality is the ultimate deciding factor.

    I’ve been using Capture One since version 8. I started with their Sony exclusive version as I was only shooting with Sony cameras. When I added a DJI Air2s to my lineup of gear I made the switch to full version of Capture One which happened shortly before they forced all brand specific versions to go the route of full Capture One. I added a DJI Air3 to my gear set and now all of a sudden I am finding that in Capture One that the raw files on it open with a “bloom” spot in the middle of the image that is brighter and of a warmer white balance than the rest of the image for the wider camera on the drone. I didn’t have this problem with the Air2s, just a minor adjustment to fix some vignetting to use the full sensor. A friend that uses Lightroom has no issues with the files when I sent them a couple to try out for me. Apparently Capture One doesn’t have a lens correction for DJI drones and has been a problem for other users for several other of their drones for quite a while. I guess I’m just lucky the Air2s didn’t have that bloom problem for me to have noticed this lack of a lens correction. So I chimed in my support for wanting a correction but was brushed off about it. Seeking out some help with more advanced Capture One users basically I need to counteract the vignetting issue and create a radial mask to compensate for the blooming to create a new base line image then just create a new layer on top to then do all my edits. But I am finding this to be a pain in the butt because it slows down my workflow considerably. I’ve never been tempted to switch away from Capture One but this might be a significant reason why I do switch as the drone is becoming a bigger part of my photography.

    I'm a bit confused about the comments regarding C1 Styles vs LR Presets. The workflow is nearly identical, expect C1 gives you the additional capability to apply it as a layer with its own opacity and ability to edit further. But if you want to apply a style directly to a layer or your background image, you just click on it exactly like you would in LR. I do agree about the UI of LR, though. It's a lot easier to use than C1. I'm torn. I like features of both and I really need to pick one. Like you, I *really* miss the skin tone cool from C1 when I'm using LR. And I also miss the layers. However, all that capability is a two-edged sword for me. In C1, I tend to over-edit my photos because it's so incredibly easy to do it. I sometimes end up losing depth to my photos in a way that's hard to describe. It just ends up looking flattened somehow and my only guess is that it's due to over processing and messing up contrast or something. I do this much less often if I stick to LR. In both cases, I still also need to make a round trip through Photoshop anyway. I seriously need to just pick one and streamline my workflow.

    Definitely presets and sync-ed editing is a time saver. One important thing though is missing in LR. When you need to adjust WB you have to do it individually with every image. LR can only assign the same temperature/tint to selection, but it doesn't allow to proportionally warm up or cool down multiple images.

    Dunna I had the same issues you face in C1 and for the same reason I kept going back to lightroom. And yes, I miss the same things in C1. You mentioned the xmp file in lightroom CC. You can create those in classic too, you need to tick a check mark = Lightroom > Catalog Settings > Metadata Those files can also be created by C1 and they open up in both softwares, but not with all settings transferred though. One more advantage for Lightroom, in my opinion, is the seamless workflow transition from desktop to mobile (or iPad). The smart preview is a life saver too!

Now that I have a Macbook Pro, and also for a lot of the reasons you specified in the video I'm starting to become more tempted to jump over to Lightroom CC. darktable is powerful but I think I'm kind of hitting my max attention span on a lot of my edits now (I'm finding myself not really needing to edit so much in my latest shots, so its actually more straight forward for me to switch to Lightroom in terms of a workflow process). The tools are stupidly powerful in darktable which has been why I've stayed with it for so long but I'm also the type of person that also needs to switch up every once and awhile.

    Synchronicity. I am in the middle of a similar transition. I started using C1 two years ago, and loved your videos on it. And now I'm leaning back toward Bridge/ACR/LrC. I just wish LrC/ACR would add a feature like the Refine Mask… tool in C1. I also wish I could make a giant curves tool like I can in C1. But all roads are leading me back into the Adobe world.

    I use CaptureOne Pro for the tethering capabilities, skin tone tool, layers feels more like photoshop and honestly, the colour is so much better coming out of Capture than Lightroom. I like to work in sessions, it just makes more sense to me. I don't care about denoise, and any retouching I do is done is photoshop. The only thing that I don't like about CaptureOne is that it is very expensive, that is where Adobe has a huge advantage

    For me the massive LR catalog is still a deal killer. The portability of C1 Sessions makes working as a traveling photographer so much easier. Add to that the advantages of managing storage and cloud synchronization with smaller logical units of work (Sessions) and I decided about 6 months ago to stay with C1. But I agree with the functional advantages you pointed out for LRCC. I also don’t trust Adobe to keep LRC. I think they will push us all to cloud based.

    Lightroom, in my opinion, has a big deficiency. Huge. The shortcut keys for editing photos. With LR I am forced to use the mouse to change exposure, contrast, shadows... blah blah blah! With C1 they can vary every parameter from the keyboard without ever using the mouse. This is worth much more to me than Ai masks which I rarely use. The editing speed is 100 times faster than LR for me, for the way I work. LR presets are missing in C1, but using Fujifilm I love the film simulations which work better on C1, raw files are also processed much better. I created my own styles and that's okay.

    First point you can absolutely do in C1. Second one is definitely an area that C1 needs to catch up on it only understands subject and background. However the number of times I have to adjust the mask makes this a moot point FOR ME (I saw it on your video 1:41 the subject masking did something weird under your right foot!). Intersecting masks and being able to cut one mask from another would be so cool! On point 2 as I said I just don't trust any of the masks to do it right and as nice as it might be to copy past adjustments (C1 is going there too) BTW not true that C1 will paste over your previous mask - for subject and Background it recalculates them but not reliably matching my expectations. AI noise would be great built-in. I use DXO but C1 is horribly clunky with using external software and DXO massively expands the files due to de-mozaicing. I am hugely jealous of the calibration tools. Presets.... I have so many for various programs, like the idea BUT I find I never use them. Ease of use - I did a trial of Adobe software and after 30 minutes I had uninstalled it just doesn't work the way I do - as you say it is a subjective thing. Photoshop thing trickling down - I get this. especially content aware fill etc anything that keeps me away from PS is a good thing that software is so unintuitive for me. Sessions & catalogs - nice to hear someone gets the differentiation! At the end of the day I'm sure they are both great tools and it is a matter of taste as to how well one fits your workflow (and how flexible you are about your workflow). I applaud your ability to go back and forth - as I said I tried Photoshop (I was a regular user until they switched to subscription and never would have changed until they switched their licencing model) having tried C1 I find I can do edits so fast I just find it hard to switch back. Great video.

    As for cutting one mask out of another in C1, you can sort of replicate this feature by copying mask from one layer to another and inverting it. For example you create a subject mask and you adjust it and then you copy it to another layer and invert it to get your background mask

    It is so funny to watch those videos and see how ridiculous sometimes companies like adobe designs their multimillion programs like Lightroom to don’t have actually intuitive layer systems and then I look at my preferred editing program, Davinci resolve, which is based on a nondestructive node system and I have all the tools of all those programs in one, and it is even that much cheaper than both of them. The only thing that’s missing is the advanced masking tools what’s unfortunate, but the price to to performance ratio is just so much better compared to any photo editor out there. Most of all considered how damn expensive they are.

    Number one reason not to go back to lightroom: LR catalog system. Working with file based sessions is just the better and more logical way for me. Easy to do backups, no bloated database is one of the main reasons to use C1 over LR. And, as mentioned in the video, for a portrait photographer at least, the color editor with skin tone editor has just become an essetial tool. Also C1 AI masking is much superior to LR and works better for me. Btw in the latest version you can copy AI masks for Background and Subject isolation :)

Skin tones and generally the way the photo comes out of camera seems way better in capture one. I was actually shocked by how much better it looks right out of camera. Seems like now seeing this that I guess lightroom converts the photo format to something other then raw and it affects the image.

    If only Adobe would improve the performance of Lightroom Classic in the library mode, I'd feel less irritated about continuing to pay them money. Why on earth it still uses the CPU for thumbnail generation when it uses the GPU for photo export I have no damn clue and it's immensely annoying. I also had to upgrade to 128GB of RAM so I could run Lightroom Classic at the same time as Davinci Resolve because LR uses roughly 45GB of RAM on my machine 😐 Still the least painful library management/editing software though, soooooo

If I needed perfection, C1 has greater precision but at the cost of time. I agree that masking and presets are superior in LR and the calibration tool has been a revelation. It can rescue dull or discoloured images so easily. I'm going to try your idea of using Lightroom for sessions.

    I would be interested to see if the statement about C1 having better raw processing and colors vs Adobe Suite. It had been the (subjective) statement (although never scienctifically tested) by every YTber back in the day. I wonder if this statement holds true today? Adobe has come along way and I'd be surprised if C1 is really that much further ahead in this area. I've been on C1 for the last 3 years and thinking about cancelling it. They moved from a perpetual license to subscription and now trying to move you to their "all-in-one" subscription. TBH, it's getting really annoying and they are constantly jacking the prices up. Lastly, their software updates require you to download the full version and reinstall it every time. Why can't they do a normal update...

The funny thing the best alternative is Darktable, which is free. But none of the alternatives are nearly as good as LR.
