    My workflow starts by adding the photos into Lightroom on the desktop, this uploads them all to the cloud so they are safe. I then open Lightroom classic, this sync’s with the cloud and my photos are available. I use classic to edit them. At this point it’s all synced with LR LRC and LR mobile. 🎉

    LrC can write XMPs automatically if you tell it to. And you really should if you don't want to lose your work when your catalog gets corrupted. It's a single checkbox in the catalog settings.

    If you want to edit across both apps but don’t want to upload the full photos into Adobe Cloud there is an easier option which is to import in Lightroom Classic and add to a cloud synced collection - the collection will be available as an Album in Lightroom and only the smart preview will be synced to the cloud enabling full editing even in Lightroom no need to mess around with XMP’s (although you can enable them if you want as per other comments it means one less issue if any problems with your catalog).

    There are a couple od advantages to Classic that I find to be important. Classic has "color label", this helps with precise organization (for my workflow). Another is the "people" mask, CC has only subject and doesn't isolate people and people's features (hair, skin, etc.). This reduces the need to go to photoshop (sometimes).

  • @dunnadidit

    I had to go double check this but you're half right. LRCC doesn't have the color labels which is a great point. However, it definitely has the ability to mask people and peoples features. This might be new so make sure to check your updates.

    Lightroom has had the same people mask tools as Classic for quite some time... on the desktop. If you're referring to LR Mobile, then you are correct: that version does not have People detection/masking. HOWEVER, any people masks that you create on the desktop will be available on Mobile. Also, while I understand that LR doesn't have color labels, it does have Stars and Flags. And you can apply a keyword, such as "Yellow," which you can then search and filter by.

    @@dunnadidit your absolutely right! I just checked and CC was 2 updates behind (I just set it to auto update). I found a new option in CC mask, which is mask preset, similar to Classic. But I can’t see an option to sync or import the brush presets I have in Classic.

    Photo stacking is another one. I shot 4 pics almost identical so wanted to stack them to aid organisation. I did this in Lightroom on the desktop. Neither Lightroom Mobile or Lightroom Classic picked up the changes (there were all cloud photos so should of syncd.)

    Your presentation is alright, it’s clear, but these might as well be two different softwares. I’m interested in LRC because of the catalog structure and I’m interested in LR for remote adjustments, which are importable to LRC, as well as a library of “best” photos in the cloud that are accessible anywhere. This is way too much workaround. Adobe needs to integrate one product, which has the latest tools from PS, and allows an import to cloud storage for access and adjustments. I’ll look elsewhere thank you! Geoff

    @@dunnadidit My pleasure! LR Local does an admirable job with all the info it stores in metadata, but I guess that Versions isn't supported. In terms of features missing while using Local, there aren't many, but the most important ones (to me, anyway) are: • No Versions • No Stacking • No AI-powered search Aside from that, you've got pretty much every editing tool that LR offers (including Denoise AI and HDR/Pano photo merge) without having to copy anything to the cloud. Not too shabby! I'm pretty entrenched with the entire LR cloud ecosystem, so if there's anything that I can help with (because there are definitely some important workflow tidbits), please reach out!

    Ya want a virtual copy in LR? Create it in Classic and it will sync to LR - if you do syncing I just now tested that and within 10 seconds I have a virtual copy in LR Another way is to 'Edit in Photoshop' then use the Export feature(s) there to make copies to your liking Export out of PS then import into Classic and let them sync to LR - - or Export out of PS then 'ADD" to LR. A nice thing about Adobe is that by using both versions of Lr, + Camera Raw and Photoshop, (sometimes Bridge) the result gets accomplished 😃

The denoise feature is fantastic but i can still throw the images through camera raw and denoise then import the DNG files into my capture one session. Best of both worlds with that way of doing it.

    Great video man! But, can I just say: The very idea that we need to do this is absolutely insane. What was Adobe thinking, making this so damn difficult?! I am a classic user 95% of the time. But at times, it is useful for me to jump on my mobile in the field to do a quick edit and send to a client, or for social posting. The very idea that my presets are not synced between classic and the cloud is just ridiculous... I create my presets in classic. There is a way to export them but it is way too involved. Adobe needs to do better, especially for what they charge. Unrelated: I say that as a previous avid user of Premiere Pro that is testing the waters of Resolve. It is a pretty clear choice. Everything is so much simpler on Resolve. And color grading is years ahead of PP.

    Why doesn't LrC simply use the computer's file system? This drives me nuts. If I import, I get 2 copies. It should (at option) simply import virtual copies and have xmp data saved with the original image. Every other program I use is simply point and edit, including showing sub-folders. This should be either the default option or a setting in preferences. We should also be able to import into session/catalogue, again using virtual copies.

  • @dunnadidit

    @dunnadidit

    There is an option on your import to not make copies in LRC. If you unlock “make second copy to:” it will just reference the files wherever they are. Then instead of xmp files, all the edit data is stored in the catalog file. It’s only kind of half of what you were talking about but I hope that helps.

    I still don't get why would I ever want LR CC -- to browse folders? But why would I do that? Every picture before it gets to any folder on hard drive is by definition first imported from the card by LR Classic version anyway. So I would just open that program and it has a ton more options how to browse and search for photos. I installed CC by mistake and as soon as I looked at that I immediately uninstalled it, it's just totally useless in my view.

I totally get that people want to own things outright, but then, like a physical good, they need to be ready to pay for any upgrades or service that is necessary... what you're buying is that piece of software as it exists when you hit the "buy" button. There are some unicorn companies that will give free upgrades or service but usually because they make a lot of money elsewhere to subsidize this practice.
