7:10 Check out my video on potassium!
Let's talk about electrolytes-what they are and why you need them.
Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals, such as:
• Potassium
• Magnesium
• Sodium
• Chloride
• Calcium
Top causes of an electrolyte deficiency:
• Fasting
• The keto diet
• Sweating
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Diuretics
• A high-carb diet
Electrolytes power the nervous system, muscles, and cells. They also control fluid balance within the cells and outside of the cells.
Warning signs of an electrolyte deficiency:
1. Arrhythmias or heart palpitations
2. Fatigue or weakness
3. Dizziness and dehydration
4. High pulse rate
5. Muscle twitching, spasms, or cramps
6. Constipation
7. Headaches and brain swelling
8. Shock
9. Nausea or keto flu
10. Decreased blood clotting

So whatis the optimal daily source of all needed electrolytes?
A few years ago my nephew would only drink / hydrate with a sugary drink here in the UK called Vimto. He had to be treated by the dentist and had 7 amalgam fillings all in one go. It was a bad experience for him. He was told to stop drinking Vimto. In fact, unbeknownst to us he hardly drank anything at all. We noticed his eyes looked dark and sunken and thought it might be a iron deficiency. Anyway, things got worse . He starting having fits and was eventually diagnosed with epilepsy. He went to see numerous specialists who put him on anti fitting medication. Despite this he still has epileptic episodes. I did a little research and found that years of lack of hydration can lead to low electrolytes. Low electrolytes is linked to Epilepsy. I encouraged him to drink more and once a day dissolve an electrolyte tablet in a glass of water. So far so good. To date no epileptic episodes.

I worked with this guy who drank gallons of Mtn Dew every day. I once calculated he'd drank my entire day's caloric intake in just Mtn Dew. Naturally he was like 300 lbs, swollen belly, felt like hell all the time. He said he didn't like water, it "didn't satisfy is thirst." He liked the tingle and flavor of soda. I recommended sparkling water, where we discovered he really just liked the sugar. It was really sad watching someone his age eat and drink himself into a state of metabolic disorder. He said he just needed Adderall, that was his problem.

I blamed the keto diet for 16 months of cystitis and had eight doses of antibiotics which brought me no relief. I even paid a urologist to diagnose what was wrong with no result. Eventually I realised it was the metformin prescribed for my T2D that was the culprit. Keto with IF had brought my blood sugars down very quickly but no doctor even considered this.

As a UPS driver, I always knew I was getting overheated when I got a headache and became fatigued. Little did I know how much salt I was lacking... I usually am cautious about salt because of the health effects, but never would've thought I was deficient in it, thank you Dr. Berg!
I can always tell I'm low on electrolytes, I feel anxious but it's my heart rate going nuts. I will be very fatigued and feel all around terrible. I get more potassium into me and I feel fine after that. I'm glad I didn't reply on doctors to figure that out. Years ago I felt terrible and went to the doctor, he prescribed Zoloft... I was mal-nusrished, sleep deprived and low on electrolytes. Got off of the Zoloft which gave me terrible insomnia got proper sleep, ate properly and got electrolytes and I was a whole new me.

Although the multiple glasses of orange juice works to reduce dehydration, you are taking in tons of sugar. Your teeth are the first to take the brunt of the damage, acid reduces the protective layer on your teeth and the sugar left behind is perfect for bacteria calculus growth. Orange juice I think is good in a pinch. Maybe not too great day to drink multiple glasses per day every day. At least the teeth problems can be avoided if you brush/floss after every time you drink it.

Years ago I was an apprentice at a power generation facility…I was in shock (hahaha 😅) when I found out electrical motors can hang in pure distilled water! This was a brilliant demonstration of how the human body needs/uses electrolytes for its electrical impulses!
Thank you for explaining how the lack of electrolytes can wreak havoc in our bodies. I was having crazy muscle spasms while sleeping. My jaw would chatter and my body would jump whenever I would try to fall asleep. My legs started to twitch and jump and I was panicking at night before trying to sleep because I knew what was in store for me. Out of desperation I went to a neurologist who ordered an MRI and never once mentioned anything about electrolytes. I started researching on KZread and read about magnesium deficiency symptoms which really resonated with me so I added magnesium Malate and the cramps and spasms subsided. I was still experiencing my teeth chattering whenever I woke up so I started my KZread research again which led me to electrolytes. Thank God! It’s been smooth sailing since then!😊

I had headaches, dizziness, muscle weakness, heart palpitations, etc. I actually did two things everybody says NOT to do, and it helped immensely. I increased my intake of red meat and salt. I remember grade school. Be sure she understands that the electrolytes are simply completing the circuit, like a simple wire. This isn't like with the potatoes where the electrolytes are generating the electricity to power a digital clock. That was my first impression, and I'm an adult. When he said it completes the circuit, that's when it dawned on me. Water itself doesn't actually conduct electricity, and he just proved this. It's the minerals inside the water that conduct electricity. That way she understands what's happening there accurately. I know electrolytes can and do hold an electric charge, but it wouldn't be nearly enough to turn on an incandescent bulb, maybe a single LED very low, maybe a digital clock like the potatoes, but that's not what's happening in this video, and it's important that she understands that because otherwise she might have an inaccurate understanding, and it might make other things confusing that she learns later.

You might choose to read an article called 'Cancer to the Rescue?' by Stephanie Seneff. She's a famous chemist and the article puts forward her theory about why the body creates cancer in the first place. Like, what is it trying to do? I read the article a few years ago and have been taking MSM supplements ever since, because if her theory is correct, then cancer is entirely preventable. If the root reason can be addressed, that can only help, right? Even for someone who already has it, I would think.

It's interesting that when potassium is stored as glycogen it's not necessarily available. Thanks again for posting this video.
Perfect exlanation. I've been living this nightmare for the past 5 years as I went between a Keto diet, Keto with high carb cheating, and then back to original carb levels. I expend a lot of sweat and energy every day working out, and before I supplemented with electrolytes I'd get all of these problems. This worked until one night it didn't. My heart rate was way too slow, I was too weak to get out of bed, I thought I may actually be dying and almost went to the ER. My husband realized my Electrolyte water contained little to no potassium. So he told me to resume normal sodium levels and gave me coconut water to drink for the next few days which has lots of potassium. And it fixed me right up!! So now we take potassium on a regular basis and keep our salt levels normal and we're good.
Soo much information!!! Thank you thank you Dr. Berg!!!
The amount of dedication and simplicity this man gives into his explanation and videos!! Thanks Dr. !

What an awesome science class! Labs and all.💕. I wish Dr Berg was my science instructor.
We just moved to North Carolina from Michigan. We’ve been more active here because the weather is so amazing, but man I’ve been feeling horrible, basically most of the symptoms you’ve listed, nausea, muscle spasms, constant headache etc etc. It now makes so much sense!!! I’ve been sweating like crazy and drinking distilled water because the tap water here tastes so horrible! Bingo!!!!!!!
It started with leg cramps and dizzyness....thank you from the bottom of my heart 💕 dr berg, you really are a natural treasure!
The explanation with the lightbulb is amazing, fun and very clarifying. Not only are you helping millions improve their health, you are educating people in a great way.

Thank you for the in depth explanation. I am writing about the implications of losing electrolytes in my brain and behavior psychology course this semester. This helped me tons!
Never fails. Every time I have a problem, Dr. Berg has the answer. Just ordered the electrolyte supplement. What can I do today, while I wait for my order to arrive? I watched your other videos and have implemented changes in my diet.
I had a keto flu when I hit a 33 hour fast during my keto diet. Honestly thought I was going to die. I keep on hearing that keto and fasting was a life saver but I never heard of the possibility of getting keto flu. My body became so cold and I was shivering and teeth were chittering. I wish I knew as much as i know now back then. Keto and fasting is amazing just make sure you prep properly and don't dive in head first.
Wow! Excellent!!!! Brilliant demonstration and very well explained and educate people like me. God bless you Dr berg.
Thank you KZread for suggesting me video and diagnosting me, according to my internet browsing, this feature is amazing. Regards.
Awesome, Awesome topic.Thank you so much Doctor Berg 🙏🙏👍
This is really fascinating. Thanks for the great video. I've been feeling unwell in this way for the last weak and wondered if it might be linked to electrolytes but wasn't sure. I think it very likely is connected due to a temporary change in my diet shortly before that of an unhealthier nature... I've started eating healthier as I was before!
Few weeks ago I bought your electrolytes and it’s delicious. I am doing intermittent fasting 8 weeks now and dropped it 24 pounds so far. Thank you so much 🙏🙏

I went to so many doctors for some kind of sensation in body which was causing all those symptoms but nobody could detect that i was having hyponatremia. One day i got admitted with dizziness in hospital and got tested for sodium and it was too low, after correcting sodium i began to recover. Thanks to you doctor for awareness. I wish i could have seen your videos long time back then I wouldn't have faced this problem. Anyway better late than never. Thanks again.

More doctors need to know about that, especially the ones that are prescribing blood pressure medications. Despite fake medical beliefs, there is no guarantee that a given person has too much sodium in their body. The only way to know for sure is to test for it. People sweat more and less than others and some people retain more or less of it due to their kidneys and then there's the amount of fluids and their actual intake. Without actually having lab work done to determine whether or not there's even an excess, there should be no blood pressure medication prescribed that affects either potassium or sodium. People can be a lot closer to dangerous levels than one might expect.

So that is why my heart rate was so high all these years. I drank about 1-4 liters of Coca-Cola for about 19 years each day, depending on the daily circumstances. No coffee and no water. Last year it began to feel like I'm breaking down. For the past 5 months I have been drinking only water and really trying to look after myself better. Extremely difficult as it may be, but my back pain disappeared. Many things have changed as I also eat less meat and more vegetables now. Thanks for letting me share, been following a while and feel grateful towards the information as I do take heed of what you say Dr. Thank you.

Your information is always so well presented and researched. You have definitely contributed to better health for many people, mine included.
After stumbling across your videos in 2016 , the advice you give to having transformed my life was years of meditation and meditating for different symptoms of numerous medical investigations and procedures for keeping me hooked on meditation for many years now free from all medical problems associated with meditation and looked into diet and importance of minerals and vitamins in your advice being the Holy grail for good nutrition and health. I always knew that the increased medication was creating more symptoms of being diagnosed with lifelong illnesses and told me I would need the medication for life. I started keeping electrolytes in my medicine cabinet to replenish them when illness hit my family in pushing fluids in not worrying about food intake for a couple days and I started looking into the foods that I was consuming and nutritional value of food that were being told to be healthy foods that I knew were not good to genetically modified foods and forced growth hormone that was not healthy food for processing foods and food manufacturers that are misleading the people that are buying food with hidden ingredients and not just accepting the science of eating what they deemed to be safe. Animals are being fed food that is not healthy foods that end up being contaminated with the science that they have been slowly changing the way food is not healthy people have lost their lives and increased illnesses from lacking knowledge about food products that people today rely on manufactured foods that are convincing people who eat rubbish to consume large quantities of food from body crying out for minerals and vitamins that appear in other systems and cravings for food when they only have to consume mineral and vitamins that’s missing from their diet. I am 65 years old and over 50 years of being ill with my whole life of being given medication that stripped me of my insulin resistance medication and heart disease and inflammatory disease and increased mobility issues with my diabetes and other chronic disease that weight gain from lack of mobility and failure in eyesight and incontinence and diabetes being supported to be the cause of bladder and bowel incontinence with antidepressant medication for my symptoms made me miserable and lost self esteem issues of loss of appetite and when I started to follow up your advice I am transitioning from being reliant on medication to family taking care of myself for reclaiming my life from being overweight to having a normal lifestyle for losing weight and losing symptoms and being able to see the benefits and impacts from poor diet and nutrition as on the body.

Glad I could be of assistance!
I’ve had debilitating muscle cramps (legs, hamstring and lower back) for the last three yrs. I got an MRI to check for herniated disk was cleared and after seeing three specialists all they came up with were steroid injections (which didn’t work either) and muscle relaxants. Then few months ago I started taking a magnesium supplement and adding sports electrolyte powder to my water and noticed the cramps would lessen and I could walk and bend down normally. But then after a few days they would come back. When I noticed this pattern I looked up different types of cramping and it’s causation. I stumbled upon articles that talked about HEAT CRAMPS. So I started applying ice around my neck, taking cold showers and sitting in air conditioning more which lowered my body temperature significantly. After a week of that cramps have been gone for good. All those doctors visits, mri and pills was for nothing. None of them suggested that my cramps might be heat cramps. Incredible. I suffered for three yrs. Sometimes it’s something this simple. I couldn’t believe it and still can’t till this day.
Do a follow-up video to this one that goes further into the balances, specifically what vitamins/minerals are used to absorb these electrolytes in a useful manner, and which ones hinder the absorption of others. I remember one video where you discussed the issue with sodium and another mineral, and you said it may be because we're adding too much salt, and it's hindering the absorption and to lower your salt intake some, so that the other mineral can be absorbed better, and the problem should go away. I'm terrible with how imprecise I am, but I can't remember what the other one was, maybe selenium or magnesium, and maybe it was about leg cramps?
