This is the World's Loneliest Tree

Ғылым және технология

Tucked away in a corner of London's Royal Botanic Gardens, there is a very peculiar plant. At first glance, it resembles a stumpy palm tree, but this ancient specimen is incredibly rare. It is, in fact, the very last of its kind on Earth. Encephalartos woodii is a cycad, a type of plant that once dominated the planet during the Jurassic Period. Over the millennia, the age of the cycad came to an end. And in the case of Encephalartos Woodii, we may have been left with only one-a single male specimen. This tree is the loneliest bachelor on Earth.

    My mum's house in South Africa still has three healthy cycads, and several others in varying stages of wild growth - so I'm assuming this is a special variant talked about in this video. They're quite the menace to maintain if you want a good looking garden. There was lots of trimming off of long dead leaves in favour of the living ones, and the prickles/teeth on the leaflets are not at all kind to bare skin. Was surprised to hear animals loved to perch on top of them

    Learning about trees and plants is really interesting. After you learn about all your local species, once in a while you find something youve never seen before in a local forest and you can appreciate the rarity of a plant by itself where no others grow and wonder how it got there. Did some bird travel 1000 miles and poop a seed or is it a plant that grows only in the most niche of conditions, or did some settler plant a small garden 200 years ago with seeds he brought from another continent?

    This tree in Kew Gardens is NOT the original Woods cycad that was found. This is a cutting from that tree. The original tree was moved to the Durban Botanical Gardens in South Africa where it’s now grown to the size of a palm tree and grows alongside at least five other Woods cycads that, like the Kew Gardens one, are cuttings of the original tree.

    Colonialism was bad but we should not conflate colonialism with the the movement of ornamental and food plants by humans from one place to another, a foundational activity that typifies virtually every human civilisation. There are excess and abuses for sure, but the propagation and distribution of plant material by humans should not be pathologised; the world we know today would be unimaginable without this essential human impulse.

    So, I just did some googling : E. Woodii is just one species of Encephalartos. There are many other Encephalartos trees that are not threatened in the wild. It has even made fertile hybrids with one of them, E. Natalensis, which brings hope to enable making female specimens by a technique called "backcrossing". In fact, some even consider E. Woodii not to really be an individual species, but more of a mutant E. Natalensis : there's about as much genetic variation between the E. Woodii specimen and E. Natalensis specimens as there is within E. Natalensis trees. They haven't really evolutionarily diverged. And it can also reproduce asexually by emitting basal shoots, which is why there are now many identical trees in various botanical gardens. So, that tree is pretty lonely, but not THAT lonely. And it isn't *the* last survivor of the trees that constituted the bulk of the dinosaur's flora, since that would also apply to the other species of Encephalartos trees, which, again, are thriving. It's a really interesting curiosity that they found a single tree that was the only member of its species, but they kind of blew it out of proportions in that video... I mean, if all those trees had disappeared within the last 65 million years, how likely would it be that THE last specimen would be alive within our time?

  • @benhalifax9122

    @benhalifax9122

    7 жыл бұрын

    Certainly E. woodii can be cloned (and has been). What makes the particular specimen in the video unique is it is the only one from the original clump discovered by John Medley Wood that is still alive today. In other words it is the only one to have grown up in the wild. Back crossing could be used to get verrrrry close to a female E. woodii, but it wouldn't be 100% pure. If the one at Kew Gardens died the species would still exist, but the last wild survivor of the species would be lost, which would be sad. Plus it's a cute story :)

    Wood collected three offsets and some original stems and left two originals. One of which was in bad shape and didn’t survive. Well the other was collected and sent to a garden where it subsequently died. So there are no known E. Woodii’s in the wild.

    These can be vegetatively propagated from offsets and there are currently over 500 specimens around the world. Apparently it's very vigorous for a cycad and easy to clone this way. Also, Tolkien was a very educated english and the cycad on the video is 117 years old; I even remeber the mention of cycads when he describen how Shelob scaped from Beleriand when it started to sunk. Could all of this be a coincidence?

    The trees still wouldn't be able to reproduce naturally and would be genetically identical. This would be bad if you look at cases like the banana tree where a single disease will wipe out the entire cultivar.
