The Wasabi You Eat Probably Isn’t Wasabi

Most of the time, the wasabi you get in a restaurant or buy in a store is fake. It’s actually horseradish that’s colored green. Why? Well, wasabi is a notoriously difficult plant to grow. In fact, it’s considered the most difficult plant in the world to farm commercially. Yet for the past century, the Daio Wasabi Farm in Hokata, Japan, has been growing it successfully with natural spring water from nearby mountains.

Providence a decent sushi place wouldnt hide that shit. Or simplest thing you would have to do is just look at the damn fish if its served in a fillet. Used both tuna and Salmon many times before and both have a unique texture flavor and smell. If they resturaunt is masking the fishes flavor in the first place wtf are you doing there

It is not spicier than the "fake" stuff. It is more mild and complex and can easily be eaten (tasted) by itself. It is quite expensive to buy at a grocery store. I have bought it on days when the store has a fresh tuna they cut up and sell to everyone. They us a board with shark skin one it to grate it in restaurants. I have not bought one of these.. yet.

Your Favorite Dildo like dissolves like. Capsicum -the spicy part- is hydrophobic. Oil is also hydrophobic. Both attracts each other so when you eat it washes away faster. It's the reason people drink milk after eating really spicy things since milk has fat in it.

For all of those in the US, you may have had real wasabi IN the US as it can grow in certain parts of the northwest coast, predominantly in Oregon :) Some states do get shipments from there. That's where I experienced my first real wasabi, and I've never had the powdered version again. The difference is tremendous and I've never been able to overcome it!

If you've ever had Natto, they pack it with Hot Mustard, and after tasting it I felt it was similar to store bought Wasabi. Doing more digging, the fake Wasabi most places use is made with Hot Mustard, which explains the similarity. Real Wasabi is actually a lot milder, and almost has a green tea like aftertaste.

They reproduce via rhizome; the thing we eat, lmao. A lot of plants reproduce that way, like a lot of mushrooms. Basically, instead of producing seeds and dying off completely, plants that reproduce via rhizome, basically grow a new plant from a root so that even if the original plant dies, there's a whole new one. It's actually almost like cloning.

Makes sense. First and last time I ever tried "Wassabi" was at a sushi spot and I almost threw up at how gross it tasted, but now that I know it was most likey fake wassabi I'm suddenly interested in tasting real wassabi. Especially with some sushi! 🔥

wasabi is a type of horseradish, they are the same family oof plant. Real horseradish has a temporary heat that hitsb the nasal passage followed by a mild sweetness too.

I was thinking of trying to grow some in my rDWC grow, but at $50 lbs it's not worth it. The stuff I grow I get >$100 an oz for, wholesale.

calholli rDWC and other hydroponic methods of growing are only around 50 years old or so. edit: your best best, hydroponically, would probably be aquaponics since they said it needs stream water.

calholli that's not nearly the same as what we're talking about. We're talking about hydroponic growing, not a rice paddy.

I can affirm this, working in a sushi restaurant in Canada, we use fake wasabi. I tasted real wasabi and it is not that different if you don't eat a lot of wasabi, but really, it is way better IMO, it complements a dish (sushi or soba) so well.

I had a wasabi challenge one with a friend he ate like a finger of wasabi without feeling anything. And then I tried and cryed in the next 3 seconds and had to ask him to get me milk....And after 2 glasses of milk I was still crying and he felt nothing. This is like my summery of how much I can take.

I was able to attend a wasabi workshop held by the CEO of a wasabi company two years ago, and they let us grate and taste the wasabi plant. it was a pretty amazing experience, watching and tasting the process of freshly-grated wasabi turn from mildly sweet to the familiar pungently spicy kick. Recommend all sushi lovers to try real wasabi if given the chance.
